General Motors is currently working on a third generation for the Chevy Colorado nameplate, with the next-gen pickup set to debut for the 2023 model year. The upcoming 2023 Chevy Colorado will once again offer the Colorado ZR2 off-roading trim level, and now, we’re taking a closer look at the exterior details of the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 as featured in a recent teaser video.
For those readers who may have missed it, GM released a brief teaser video for the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 late last month, briefly highlighting a few bits and pieces of the off-roader’s exterior. Up front, we spot a prominent “Safari Bar,” which dominates the front end and juts up around the lower fascia. The bar has a black finish, which complements the upper grille section and trim bits as well. The headlights are slim, and the grille design is new as well, with the Chevy badge placed high and center on the fascia. Body-colored horizontal slats are seen lower in the grille, while a prominent skid plate element is seen low. We also see a pair of front-facing fog lights.
As expected of an off-road-focused vehicle, the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 rides tall with an elevated stance. The proportions are beefy and boxy, while the body is the Crew Cab / Short Box configuration. Although it’s difficult to see, the wheels appear to have a black center treatment and polished outer rim, and are obviously wrapped in capable off-roading rubber.
The rear end shows off a revised front fascia, with the Chevrolet script finished in black on the tailgate. The taillights are reshaped as well. Higher up on the bed, we see a Sport Bar finished in black.
At this point it is also a mystery if the 2023 Chevy Colorado will offer a CornerStep bumper, as GM Authority covered previously.
Beyond the exterior bits, the next-gen 2023 Chevy Colorado will also feature a totally new interior, while the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine will provide the motivation. An updated version of the GMT-31XX body-on-frame architecture dubbed 31XX-2 will provide the bones.
Look for the 2023 Chevy Colorado to debut this month.

The ZR2 in the current edition does not offer the corner step rear bumper to increase departure angles so likely the new truck will follow the same format and offer the corner step on more of the street focused trucks.
It kinda looks like the Frontier from what I can see so far. Not too sure that it’s smart to only have one engine option.
The one engine would be an issue if it were a step back but with more power and torque it is added value to the more base trucks as well the high end.
C8.R – It will be interesting to see the 4 cylinders longevity when it comes to towing.
The engine was designed for the Silverado. It will be fine in the Colorado.
No one buys the 2.5 except fleets. No one buys the 2.8 unless they special order it. The 2.7 can produce 3.6 horsepower, 2.8 torque, and at least 2.5 miles per gallon. The only other option really recommended at this point would be the availability of the 3.0, but I feel gm just keeps that engine around to offset large truck fuel economy.
“the 2.7 can produce 3.6 horsepower” .. my lawnmower has more horsepower than that. LOL
You obviously don’t get the reference he was making about 3.6 engine hp or 2.8 engine torque, and your attempt at humor failed.
I see what look like are hash marks on the fender in the distant shot.
nahhh… some idiot just could not back the truck up… (thinkin’ aloud)
So, the Safari Bar may block the front camera from giving the driver complete 360 degrees of data & images. I guess that is something GMC will have to rectify before selling to the public. Here is a novel idea, just create a damn push bar that does not obscure the viewing capabilities of the front camera. Did anyone of the Chevy designers think, that putting a safety warning (even in tiny print) about an optional (non-operational) push bar might be embarrassing to their brand?
Where I live, hitting a deer isn’t a question “if” as as much as “when.” I would love a factory installed deer slayer bar that would substantially reduce the front end damage..
Do you think that push bar will optional? I hope so because I don’t really like it!
People compained the 3.6 wasn’t truck enough, so they have the 2.7 turbo four that was designed for trucks and people still complain. How many of you have driven the new turbo engines. they have tons of power and last a long time. Turbos of today are nothing like they were just 20 years ago. New oils, better cooling and better engineering. If this 2.7 is the same power as the new silverado, it will be great engine to have in a smaller truck. GM may have big winner here especially if they can get production numbers up.
I agree. I feel it’s a tad small for the Silverado and would only be worth looking at if it had the 10 speed. Unless they nueter them, it will be great in the Colorado. 310/400 minimum though, and full power in the Zr2 and if they do a sporty version.
And more complicated, and more expensive, and more recalls, and more computer chips, and more pain in the a**
I’ve driven turbos from 30 years ago, they ran fine with well over 100k miles on them.
Has anyone who has owned both the current Colorado and Silverado comment on ride quality differences?
I owned a 18 Silverado and had a 19 Sierra loaner. But I have not driven a Colorado
I have been waiting for this new truck for many years. I was disappointed with current Colorado seats. I found them uncomfortable. I didn’t mind the other interior items that folks didn’t like, but I could not get by the uncomfortable seats and didn’t buy. In my opinion GM is missing the boat with their new all electric thinking. What I would love to see in a new Colorado is a plug in hybrid. If you are giving us the new turbo 4, I amok with that, but I would just like to plug in and drive 50 miles al electric, then switch to gas on extended trips and for towing. I am excited to see the entire new Colorado pickup lineup. GM will need to step up quality and reliability to match Tacoma.
Looks a lot like my trail boss front end which lots good but on this truck not so much. I hope it looks better when we get rolled out.
Offer SCSB pleaseee!
