2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss: First Live Photos

GM officially unveiled the all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado yesterday, pulling the sheets on a fresh third generation for the midsize pickup nameplate. Among the updates and changes is the addition of the new special edition Desert Boss package for the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2, and now, GM Authority is bringing you the very-first live on-the-road shots of the new Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss.

For those readers who may be unaware, the Desert Boss package adds in a selection of components and features that enhance the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 in terms of styling and off-road prowess. This particular example is draped in an exterior paint color dubbed Nitro Yellow Metallic, which is tagged with paint code GCP and complements the third-gen’s revised styling with a bright, eye-catching finish.

The front end sports a unique front fascia treatment only offered with the Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Package, and includes a prominent front bash bar. We also spot some extensive underbody skid plate protection, as well as ZR2 badging and a red front tow hook. The black cladding ties in well with the black hood bulge and Flowtie badging.

Moving to the sides, we see a set of 17-inch wheels wrapped in knobby Goodyear Wrangler rubber. Also check the hash mark decal on the front fender and rocker protection bar. Towards the rear of the vehicle, you’ll find a sports bar and sail panel, as well as a roof-mounted light bar and further ZR2 badging.

Finishing off the rear is a single exhaust tip that exits around the rear passenger-side fender. Yet more ZR2 badging is added to the tailgate.

Further upgrades specific to the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss package include an underbody camera system with 10 camera views, including a segment-first underbody camera. All 2023 Colorado ZR2 models are equipped with Multimatic DSSV dampers and ZR2-specific chassis upgrades, while ground clearance is set at 10.7 inches.

Under the black hood bulge you’ll find the top 2.7L Turbo High-Output tune for the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, included as standard and only available for the ZR2 trim level. Output is rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, all of which hits the four-wheel drive system through the updated GM eight-speed automatic transmission.

The all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado will be available in the first half of the 2023 calendar year, with production taking place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

Awesome truck. It will be better with a black decal in the rear, so people will be able to see Chevrolet name. The front bar shouldn’t hide the bow tie too.

Since you mentioned the front bar, looks like it’s plastic which I wouldn’t think would offer any protection. You can see in the fourth picture the grid that makes it up. Great looking truck though! Can’t wait to order one.

Locking tailgate! Outboard rear shocks! No Diesel, sad!

Why bother with that fairly gutless diesel when this engine has way more HP and about as much torque?

More torque than the diesel and easier maintenance, plus a lot more horsepower! The best of both worlds!

With a good design you can tell what a vehicle is even with no emblems. They did that here as there is no truck like this.

I’m seriously considering getting a Z71 to replace my Ram. Just waiting to see what the Canyon looks like. GM nailed this truck.

I hope you can option up the Trail boss. Zr2 is a little more than I want and I love that wide stance on the TB and ZR2.

Why are the front shocks camouflaged?

This was done pre-reveal to maintain the integrity/anonymity of the truck… Paparazzi not withstanding.

The question is why the dimple in the fender flairs. I know the Canyon will have lights there but why on the Chevy?

Nice upgrades. Looks great but no long bed option = deal killer. Bad decision not to offer CCLB!
Not a fan of the round vents though.

This doesn’t have the beadlock wheels or the Desert Boss decals… This isn’t the desert boss.
