Listen To The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X Exhaust: Video

The GMC Sierra AT4X was introduced with the light-duty pickup truck’s recent 2022-model-year refresh, offering advanced off-road capability without compromising on-road comfort, technology, or towing / payload. Now, we’re listening to the exhaust on the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X as it gives us an engine start and a few revs in the following exclusive GM Authority video.

The video is simple and straightforward, focusing on the rear of the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X as the engine starts and revs a few times. Clocking in at just a little over 1 minute, there’s no overlaid music or narration – rather, the video simply provides the viewer with the audio of the V8 doing its thing.

The V8 in question is the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8  L87 gasoline engine, the only engine option offered for the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X. Output is rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, all of which is sent through the GM 10-speed automatic transmission, as well as drivetrain upgrades like front and rear e-locking differentials and an Autotrac two-speed transfer case.

Critically, the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X also features a unique exhaust treatment that tucks the twin exhaust pipes underneath the rear bumper. This layout enhances the truck’s ground clearance, making it even more capable when rock crawling and traversing tricky terrain.

As we can hear in the video, the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X has a nice burble to it, revving up with a deep V8 exhaust note before settling into a quiet idle, even when recording directly behind the vehicle.

Further upgrades added to the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X include unique Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers paired with unique springs, the combination of which increase front and rear suspension travel by 50 mm and 25 mm, respectively, as compared to the “standard” AT4 suspension. The truck also rides on 18-inch wheels with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac Mud Terrain tires, and is equipped with a unique steel transfer case shield.

Under the skin is the GM T1 platform, with production taking place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the GM Silao plant in Mexico.

  1. Yeah, sounds just like my Trail Boss. Big Deal. Rams have the best sounding factory exhaust out there. GM’s trucks have had quiet truck exhausts for almost 30 years. It’s a truck, it should be loud FFS!!

  2. I have a 2022 GMC and the exhaust out under the bumper, and I have added a cold air intake, and I upgraded my exhaust, between the paint color, Cajun Red Tent Coat, and the sound of the exhaust.

    1. The color on the 2021-2022 Sierra’s, including the one in the video, is called Cayenne Red Tintcoat, not Cajun Red. I have a Cayenne Red 2021 Sierra Denali.

Cajun Red was a 2019-2020 color. While both are dark reds, the Cayenne Red is a more dramatic color, that changes in shade depending on light and reflection, similar to, but not quite as dramatically as flip flop paints, like Dupont’s Chromaflair. Cayenne Red is being replaced for 2023 with Volcanic Red Tintcoat, which I haven’t seen yet, but I assume will be similar to Cayenne Red.

I wonder if this exhaust is the same as the GM Performance exhaust system made by Borla, that’s available through Chevrolet & GMC Accessories? The GM Accessories Borla system has a nice rumble at idle and a decent sound under acceleration, but it’s not loud enough to be intrusive in the interior.

  3. I want to hear it when I get on it, but don’t want hear when I’m cruising. Why can’t they just put a dual mode muffler on it, these things are so damn expensive anyway, nobody will notice another few hundred bucks. But you can’t even get the 6.2 engine anyway so this article doesn’t really matter.

  4. I have the GM Borla non split cat back exhaust on my 22 refreshed AT4 and had it on my 21 AT4. It sounds very good. Not too loud or too quiet. I did not like driving the 22 w/o the exhaust installed because it was too quiet. My 2001 Z06 with stock titanium exhaust is silent compared to my Sierra, at isle at least.
