GM Subsidiary Workers In Michigan Could Go On Strike This Thursday

GM subsidiary employees may go on strike tomorrow amid an ongoing contract dispute between the automaker and the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union.

According to a recent report from The Detroit News, UAW Vice President Terry Dittes recently acknowledged in a letter that a strike deadline was set for Thursday, June 30th, 2022 at 10 a.m., assuming that a deal between GM and the UAW could not be met. Employees set to strike include those working at GM Subsystems Manufacturing LLC. Workers perform a number of functions vital for GM’s production capabilities.

If the strike does move forward, it could affect production at several Michigan-based GM facilities, including the GM Lansing Grand River plant, which  is responsible for production of the Cadillac CT4, Cadillac CT5, and Chevy Camaro, the GM Flint plant, which is responsible for production of the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD heavy-duty pickup trucks, and GM Orion plant, which only recently came back online to produce the Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Bolt EUV following downtime as GM addressed a massive battery recall.

According to The Detroit News, the UAW has engaged in contract negotiations for GM Subsystems employees since May of 2021, with roughly 700 employees represented.

In a letter, UAW VP Dittes adds that GM employees under the GM-UAW international contract will be required to report to work in the event that a strike does move forward, while UAW-represented maintenance employees of Aramark Corp. and other companies at the three GM facilities listed above have the right to honor an authorized picket line of UAW-represented employees involved in a labor dispute at one of the affected sites.

According to GM spokesman Dan Flores, GM is “continuing to negotiate in good faith and we are hopeful we can reach an agreement that positions our team members and our business for success.”

  4. I work at the Lockport NY GM components plant. We start at 16.50. after ten years I make 22.50. is that over payed? I have to lift a condenser that’s in a steel frame that weighs 25 lbs and is 3.5ft by 2.5ft 320 times a day. They sell these condensers for $3000 a piece. How does this compare to a cheeseburger? Especially when McDonald’s is starting at $16. And last I knew, a big Mac isn’t selling for $60000.

    1. Solidarity from another union guy here. Ignore the trolls who are cowed into thinking that exploiting workers is a good thing and then complain about the lack of a middle class.

      1. Another Union member here. It’s just jealousy with the naysayers. Years ago workers that weren’t in a Union would ask how they could become Union members with a living wage and benefits along with representation. Now they are just jealous and critical because they don’t want to stand up to the boss or go through the effort to form a Union at their workplace. United we bargain, divided we beg. Who wants to beg for a paycheck? Employers are in business for one thing and one thing only: To make money. They rarely give workers anything out of the kindness or their heart. Good luck with your bargaining.

          1. Your bitterness is consuming you Andy. As for the 100 other jobs deserving more money, maybe they would get it if they had a union.

          3. Actually the rank and file get to vote on when to strike and they also get to vote on who their Union Leadership is.

  5. Business life blood is it’s labor force, union or non-union period. In many cases non-union workers do make more money, stock options, cross training for future opportunities. In a union, it is a collective and based on particular job lanes you can’t cross, OT to increase your pay, and having a mouth piece to that knows what’s best for you or you’re out and a troublemaker.

In the big picture, non- union members are responsible for design, automation, tech innovation, inventory, revenue retention, selling to bring in money to pay for labor, yup selling vehicles is the money deposited into your pockets every 2 weeks. If the selling of vehicles don’t make the quota, layoffs or cut backs to labor…

As far as profits, mentioned above for trucks, that is divided and sub-divided to keep gm ahead of the competition. Cost not seen by labor which is develop and research, testing to beat the competition, marketing, better products, inflation on goods to build, taxes, health benefits cost, payroll, and union cost.

Just like any business, what does a hamburger or 1 taco cost to sell, whats left for a profit to expand the business or expand the menu…

Labor only sees what the union tells them, that money goes into corporate pockets…and they are getting rich and we’re not….strike!

    Lol…

    1. That $40000 was a breakdown that was given to us, as a labor force by our plant. They where trying to show us what we cost the company, out of an $80000 truck. The break down included sales and inovation. It included transportation for the the vehicles the the lots. It included the cost of the labor pool. It included the cost of running the building and research and development. As for the cost of the union, that comes out of our personal checks as union dues. Also, there has been no shortage of sales of vehicles, sense the bankruptcy gm has seen profits and more profits. No shortages. Even during COVID and the strike, they still pulled a profit. Just less of a one. Profits in the billions. That’s profits, which is after research, development, labor payment, material purchasing. Billions in profits. That’s not including the tax breaks they get for “being green” and “providing jobs” . I don’t want to be rich. I don’t even want to make $100000 a year. But I would like to be able to be comfortable. I don’t know what you people think our yearly wage is, but your out of your minds if you think were well off.

  6. LIVE BETTER WORK UNION. Unions are not just about money they also serve to bring work place justice. For those of you bashing UNIONS get off your knees and wipe the shoe polish off your tongues from licking the corporate boot heels. It has been my experience UNION bashers have little self worth. To all my UNION BROTHERS AND SISTERS STAY STRONG! As they say “you can’t fix stupid”. To all the knuckle dragging haters ” it is difficult to have an argument with an intelligent person and dam near impossible to have one with a stupid one. I will let you figure out which one you are.

    1. though i am union(686) they have not done us a whole lot of justice here in lockport. i also dont think its beneficial to insult people. i do agree with you that is very difficult to have a conversation with an unintelligent person, or an ignorant one as well. but the only way to fix that is with knowledge. knowledge is power. questions need to be asked and ideas need to be challenged, not to simply insult people.

  7. i dont understand why everyone is apposed to gm workers making more money. even fast food is making more money. in ten years my pay has not increased. does that seem right? please explain…. why is it ok for everything to increase in price, for everyone to get pay raises, but not me? my grandparents retired from gm, it was supposed to be a good paying job for the working class person. even gm has given themselves a pay raise by increasing the cost of vehicles, but there workers didnt get a raise. i have seen two contracts(every 4 years) and the labor force hasnt received a raise.
