Five Things We Love About The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X

The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X is a new addition for the 2022 model year refresh of the light-duty 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, introducing an even-more-capable off-roader trim level that builds on top of the already-capable AT4. GM Authority has been driving the new AT4X and testing it out, and now, we’re here to report on five things that we love about the Sierra’s new range-topping off-roader.

1. The Exterior

We love how the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X looks. This pickup is tough, imposing, and sinister, everything that a rough-and-ready off-roader should be. The AT4X is equipped as standard with 18-inch Gloss Black painted aluminum wheels from the factory, which mount a set of 275/65R18 Mud-Terrain Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, and the rugged combo complements the Sierra’s brawny design.

We also think the look plays well with the refreshed fascia, especially the new headlights, which give the truck an extra technical look. The grille, with its bronze-black accents (officially called Black chrome with gloss black accents) sets it off perfectly.

2. The Interior

We also love the interior – finally, a cabin that GM fans won’t have to make any excuses about. Inside, the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X is both attractive and functional. We did enjoy the Obsidian Rush interior, which strikes a perfect balance between the off-roader truck’s capability with convenience, comfort and style.

The cabin features premium leather galore, including full-grain leather-wrapped and technical grain leather accents. These are highlighted with white piping and red stitching, further underlining the added levels that this truck brings to the table. The Sierra AT4X’s cabin also features authentic, dark Vanta ash wood trim and a premium microsuede headliner, which is absolutely striking in person.

The engine stop-start button is an awesome new touch as well, as it’s perfectly placed and just the right size than it’s ever been before. Additionally, the button has a nice metallic sheen to it.

The center stack and center console are also really well-designed, with the AC vents, center screen, HVAC controls and various vehicle controls blending nicely with the newfound storage areas and new console-mounted shifter. Overall, this cabin feels solid and respectable, exactly as it should in a “Professional Grade” product that GMC has positioned itself as being.

3. Vehicle Size And Ride Height

The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X is huge, but in only the right ways – length and height, to be exact. Indeed, this kind of rig should be big, but it isn’t obnoxiously so like some other trucks – looking at you, Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram TRX.

Indeed, the Sierra AT4X is a big, bold and imposing full-size truck. Once we got used to its dimensions, it was a breeze to get around in this rig, all while feeling like we’re driving something special.

4. Ride Quality

This is where the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X excels. The truck is equipped as standard with Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, which go a long way in improving this truck’s ride quality. Although it can still feel a little choppy on imperfect roadways, the ride is still much better than one might expect. Meanwhile, driving off the pavement is where this thing truly shines, and the DSSV dampers truly come into their own, soaking up small bumps and large imperfections with ease.

5. The Technology

The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X is packed with tech, including the all-new, 13.4-inch diagonal center touchscreen and 12.3-inch diagonal Driver Information Center (gauge cluster, aka instrument panel). There’s also the 15-inch diagonal multi-color Head-Up Display (HUD), which puts other HUDs currently available on the market to shame. With more than 40 diagonal inches of digital display combined – the most in its class, in fact – thing has screens galore.

There’ also a plethora of cameras deliver 14 camera views, helping the driver navigate this large rig, including the Rear Vision Camera, a digital overhead image (bird’s eye view camera), front and rear dynamic guidelines, a new Bed View camera, and more. There’s also a power-sliding rear window, power sunroof, and best-in-class 16-way power-adjustable and massaging front seats. Other highlights include wireless phone projection with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 12-speaker Bose Premium Series stereo with Center Point technology.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the AT4’s various active safety features, such as Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Front and Rear Park Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

All in, we feel the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X is a very attractive, well-driving, high-tech truck that could be used as a daily driver as much as it can be enjoyed on paved roads. That said, it’s not perfect – and we’ll share why we think so in a week, so stay tuned as we bring you more Sierra AT4X coverage. • Here is my question, why does a truck that is an off road vechile equiped with all these safety feature, and a vechile that is used to transport humans, like the Express anad Savanna see nothing of these features----where I think they should be availble before any truck gets them. Tells us it's all about money and not about safety of people. Because trucks get sold in large numbers, and thats where they money comes from.

  • The X package should be offered across the board on all GMC trucks, the interior should be offered as an interior upgrade to the AT4 trim level. All the off road items will never be used on a $80,000 truck. This is more of a mountain trail running truck, not a desert running truck like the Raptor. I want it for the interior, because the standard GM truck seats suck.

  • I have yet to see a single refreshed Sierra anywhere in the USA.... I ordered one in January and not a word yet... DOES IT ACTUALLY EXIST? Maybe in area 51? GM is apparently doing everything in its power to disappoint its customer base

    • I’ve seen several, some for only a moment. You really have to look close at the front of the truck to distinguish. The grill and the headlights are key. If you’re not paying attention, it’s likely you’ll miss the upgrade.

The Denali Ultimates look pretty sweet, there were 2 in southern CA in the Titanium Rush. Saw an AT4 in the bright blue in AZ only for a fraction of a second. Then have seen an AT4X, SLT, and Elevation in the red, Have also seen an at4 in the Titanium Rush. These other units have all been in MN.

They’re out there but you have to look for em.

    • Saw one on Friday. It was a LTZ or High Country model, lots of chrome.
Reminds me of the difference from the 2004 to 2005 Silverado fronts.

  • They can keep the ugly black wheels and it's shocking how much the price has soared 3 times on this 2022 truck
