All-New Buick Electra-X Concept Makes World Debut In China

Last week, GM revealed the name and first teaser images of the all-new Buick Electra-X Concept crossover that previews Buick’s first all-electric vehicle based on Ultium battery and Ultium drive motor technology. Now, the automaker is has just unveiled the Buick Electra-X Concept in China.
The Buick Electra-X Concept debuts the design language of the Tri-Shield brand’s next-generation vehicles and represents a foretaste of its upcoming all-electric crossover. Unlike the Buick Electra Concept introduced in 2020, the new Electra-X crossover looks less futuristic and much closer to a production vehicle.
“Buick is well known across China for its beautiful styling,” said Executive Director of SAIC-GM PATAC Design, Matt Noone, in a statement. “The Electra-X will be a significant game-changer for Buick in offering products that are not only electric but also sporty and attractive to younger customers. Many of the design elements from the concept will be applied to future production models,” he added.
Based on the new Pure Design philosophy, the Buick Electra-X Concept redefines the brand’s styling direction with sculpted bodywork and elegant proportions that harness surfaces based on form rather than complex lines. The new design language is evident in the trapezoidal grille, the bold shark-nose-like lines, and the attractive Matrix LED headlight signature.
Unlike the production-ready bodywork, the interior is more typical to that of a concept vehicle with a futuristic four-seater configuration and multiple details that we probably won’t see in future production vehicles. However, the all-new Buick Electra-X Concept introduces the Virtual Cockpit System (VCS) with a 30-inch freeform display that previews the brand’s next-generation dashboard.
The Buick Electra-X Concept made its world debut in Shanghai during the 2022 Buick Brand Day, where the new global brand identity was unveiled and Buick’s plans to be an all-electric brand before the end of this decade were confirmed. The Electra-X Concept was developed by PATAC (Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center) in Shanghai as the first showing of Buick’s upcoming Electra family of zero-emission vehicles.

I’m mixed on it. Still a little too much CUV/SUV in it. Tone down the SUV side, make it just a tad more sedan, clean up the front and put a more fitting Buick style grille on and I’d like it even more.
Inside? Just not feeling that dash. Why oh why I ask myself. Why on earth do people insist on having huge screens everywhere. Have you no shame? Can’t you put down your huge tablet sized phone for just one drive? Can you not turn off the computer monitor and rest your eyes for just a moment? Why I ask. Why.
I truly have a difficult time believing that so many people really want all these huge screens in their cars. What I do believe? That people are accepting them because they have no choice.
Buick is such a big let down now with truck like wagons. Just waiting for the all new 2023 Toyota CROWN SEDAN , bigger then the Avalon it replaces. longer wheelbase for the battery under the passenger compartment. bigger trunk, the rear view reminds me of the Buick Rivera & Reatta & Skylarks with tail lights horizontally wrapping around the rear fenders.
This is an absolute stunner compared to most everything else being sold today. The proportions and shape are sensuous and fluid, particularly the rear. The grille is pure Lexus School, but thankfully without the Lexus gape and the texture could easily be fixed. The interior is clinical and cold and ripe for a serious dose of 1960s retro which would blend perfectly with the killer Flash Gordon steering wheel. All in all, I’d choose this hands down over most other vehicles on offer today if they gave it a real instrument panel and made it here in the USA. I’m no fan of SUVs, but there’s a little Mitchell era sexiness in this one’s angles and curves.
I really hate to say this, but based on the designs of gm concepts and vehicles being shown and sold in the USA – especially our graceless Tonka-Toyota inspired trucks and SUVs – gm’s China based stylists are doing much better work. Whether that is due to gm’s highly favorable position in China versus its hostile home market is anyone’s guess, but it does appear there’s a paradigm shift underway – Americans are the biggest consumers of ugly now.
I’m not sure how I feel about this concept. The side profile looks sleek and nice but the rear and front, I’m undecided if it looks hot or cold. Seems like everyone is going for the same treatment in design like taillights for example. I feel there is more room to play with in the rear. The grill may have a similar shape to the modern Lexus and the headlamps come across as the C8. Again, it is not over the top and it is not ugly but it wants to fit in with a sea of uninspired vehicles from traffic. The front end needs more room for improvement. Hopefully the production version looks far better than this. The second generation Envision looks far better looking than this so-called Electra.
Of course, it’s shown in China. GM has skipped all major US car shows and have focused only on China. There is still a market in the US, but they seem to have forgotten that.
We need to get them back to US manufacturers to improve quantity, without paying shipping fees ! I love Buicks, but not from China!
just hope this new Electra X body style dosent get shared with Chevy as they usually do , and chevy sellling it at a cheaper price after chevy does its ugly revamping of orginal style so it looks more like a Chevy and ruining it for buick,Cadilac already has taken the Regal body for their new classic sports model i think called the Black wing with cadilac grill and tail lights,
Doesnt Chevy and Cadilac have their own designers ? why are they allways using buick models and putting there ugly grils and badges on them? Raz GO BIG Buick for the future
