A 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X prototype has been caught testing by GM Authority spy photographers wearing minimal camouflage, giving us our best look yet at the next-generation mid-size pickup.
While the sighting of this prototype marks the first time we’ve spotted the next-gen GMC Canyon without the heavy vinyl drapery covering its front and rear fasciae and body panels, this vehicle still has a thin layer of white and black camouflage covering its exterior, along with placeholder headlights and taillights. Seeing as this prototype is for the new off-road-focused Canyon AT4X trim level, it features a slightly different exterior than other Canyon variants with a high-clearance bumper design, flared wheel arches and underbody skidplates.
This model also has GM’s go-to Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT off-road tires, which are mounted to a set of basic-looking steel wheels. To be clear, we do not anticipate the production 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X will feature steel wheels. GM released a teaser image of the new Canyon AT4X earlier this year that revealed the model’s tough-looking black machine face six-spoke alloy wheels, which are 17-inches in diameter as described by GM as being “beadlock capable.” This is a development prototype, so there could be any number of reasons why GM opted to use steel wheels here. We already know the truck will use a 285/70R17 tire, as well.
As we pointed out when GM teased the AT4X in April, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X will likely offer similar equipment to the current Chevy Silverado ZR2. That could mean the presence of the innovative MultiMatic DSSV dampers, which also appear on the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X and 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2, along with front and underbody skid plates and rocker panel protection rails. A 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X prototype that GM Authority spied last July appeared to be equipped with these MultiMatic-developed dampers, lending some more credibility to this hunch.
As GM Authority was first to report, the 2023 GMC Canyon will ride on an updated version of GM’s current GMT-31XX midsize body-on-frame architecture, which is expected to be referred to as 31XX-2. The vehicle will get an all-new exterior and interior, along with an all-new powerplant in the form of the turbocharged 2.7L I-4 L3B gasoline motor currently offered in the Sierra 1500. In that application, the boosted four is rated at a healthy 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission will be the GM 10-speed automatic.
The 2023 GMC Canyon, including the Canyon AT4 and AT4X model variants, will continue to be built at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri alongside the closely-related 2023 Chevy Colorado. GM invested $1 billion into the facility back in 2019 specifically to prepare it to build the next-gen midsize pickups.
The 2023 GMC Canyon, including the new AT4X variant, will debut this summer. We’ll likely receive more information the next-gen Pickup in the lead-up to its debut, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more GMC Canyon news, GMC news and a constant flow of GM news coverage.

Personally, I like the steel wheel/chunky tire look. Ought to be a package offered.
Anyone else notice the red seat belt? Specific interior upgrades coming for the ZR2 and AT4-X models? And a sunroof? Looks promising.
Also, surprised we haven’t seen any indication of a multi-pro tailgate yet. I would be surprised if that doesn’t find its way here.
Surprised that there isn’t a mini version of the Multi-pro tailgate
I have to disagree , This GMC Canyon is not the AT4-X ! The previous AT4-X was taller, had larger wheel clearance and The skid plate is much more noticeable !!
There appears to be a lot of weight in the bed, with stuffed tires.
I was really hoping they wouldn’t mimic the Sierra wheel openings but they did. It isnt as bad as the Sierra, but that looks like the only weak point of the design.
I agree, biggest turn off for me on the Sierra. This doesn’t look as bad but still don’t like it.
Given the Peeling Paint Class Action lawsuit…
Just leave the Camo on, forget the paint.
EDITORS—-YOU POSTED THE WRONG TORQUE RATING FOR THE 2.7 LITER 4 BANGER AS USED IN THE 1500 SERIES PICKUPS. IT’S NOT 348 LBS FEET, IT’S 430 POUNDS FEET OF TORQUE. IT MUST BE FRIDAY OR BIDEN HAS DRIVEN YOU CRAZY WITH HIS MUMBLE JUMBLE……LOL
i will help you with no caps.
Caps make it easier to read.
This is the first time GM authority mentioned the Engine with the old tq ratings of 348 instead of 430. Is this a mistake or a soft rollback from all the previous articles saying the higher number.
It’s a mistake as it’s a reference to the Sierra application of the HO.
My love for Truck’s.. goes way back to 1967 C-10 days ! 327 V8 , 4 Speed on the Floor! 2 wheel drive! Ahh Yeah! Goose bumps again 😊!.. nowadays it’s good mileage and performance and Mean Look I like 😋.. options are Plenty.. Passenger ejection seat should be a option 🤣🙈🎈🙏.. thanks for letting me .. Grind..😊
does anyone know if this truck will come in a long bed version ??
That’s what I want to know. Crew cab long bed is the only version I am interested in. Hoping for good news on that front, some of the competitors offer it and GM has on the current platform that this redesign is based on.
I imagine the 6’ bed on crew cabs will not be offered on the ZR2 and AT4X packages. Much like the Tacoma TRD Pro and Ranger Raptor wont come with the 6’ bed either. GM has confirmed 6’ bed on crew cabs though.
Let me guess, crew cab only… which renders it less a truck and more a midsize SUV with very short bed.
All new design, from what I can see it doesn’t look new. Maybe the interior will win me over. Hopefully with some comfortable seats! With only 1 engine choice they have a lot too do, to make this truck stand out
All I can see is a different grill, lights. Not much for being redesigned. With only one engine choice, the interior better be nice with comfortable seats and how about the multi tailgate. 6.5 ft box is a must have. This truck needs to be ahead of the competition. Not see much so far.
Looks like a possible sunroof too?
