The GMC Sierra AT4X made its big debut with the introduction of the fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, sliding in above the GMC Sierra AT4 as an even-more capable off-road trim level. Now, we’re comparing the AT4X against the AT4 with an exhaust system rev-off in the following exclusive GM Authority video.
Before we get to the video, it’s probably worth going over exactly what we’re dealing with here, starting with the GMC Sierra AT4X. From the factory, the AT4X is equipped with a unique exhaust treatment that terminates underneath and behind the rear bumper, as compared to other trim levels that integrate the exhaust tips with the rear bumper. The advantage of terminating the system behind and above the bumper is added clearance, something which the GMC Sierra AT4X maximizes in the name of enhanced off-roading agility.
By comparison, the exhaust system on the GMC Sierra AT4 terminates in a pair of rectangular, squared-off tips integrated into the rear bumper. Additionally, the model featured in this video is equipped with the the optional Cat-back Performance Exhaust system (RPO code WBC), which adds some significant aural excitement to the package, while keeping the same tips.
Critically, both vehicles are equipped with exactly the same powerplant, namely the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Of course, the performance system on the GMC Sierra AT4 frees up 13 extra ponies and eight pound-feet of torque.
Check out the full rev-off video right here:
It’s also worth noting that the performance cat-back exhaust is not compatible with the GMC Sierra AT4X, as the rear bumper on the AT4X doesn’t have the cutouts required for the rear-facing exhaust tips on the performance system. That said, it might be possible to swap the AT4 bumper to the AT4X, though that’s not something we’ve seen done just yet.
Regardless, we want to know – which of these two exhaust systems would you prefer? The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X with the standard exhaust, or the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 with the new cat-back performance exhaust? Hey Alex, there is a Borla cat-back exhaust as an accessory available for the AT4X.
That’s great to know! Will look into it.
AL
This reaffirms that I really need to add this to my truck.
Can you provide a link? I just picked up a 2022 AT4X and want to add an upgraded exhaust but can’t seem to find the Borla you’re referring to. TIA!
GM should have Borla design the exhaust systems Period! Same day I bought my 2021 AT4 6.2 I installed a Borla Attack. Great sound
“MMMMMMMMM, that louder exhaust sure sounds nice!” Plus 13 H.P. more, is always nice…lol The Sad part of this is, Five Buck gas is killing US! AND, this truck takes premium, which is at least a Dollar more. I hate to say that I am leaning towards the 3.0 diesel…
Only reason I am going GM for that 3.0 Turbo- buddy has it- drives it like he stole it and still gets 30mpg… even though fuel is a bit more- cant argue with the power and milage.
Also you get a nice subtle diesel clatter too -makes up for gasser sounds…
Put the GM BORLA cat-back exhaust system on our 2020 Yukon with the 5.3…..worth every last penny ! Talk about “waking-up” an engine this did it far greater than expectations !!! No “droning” at highway speeds, just a very nice sound under acceleration. And an added bonus was it increased highway fuel mileage by 2 mpg and that’s calculated by relying on the on-board MPG computer. Had previous good experience with a BORLA cat-back in the late 80’s and they make a great product that fits exactly.
Nothing better than the sound of a V8. Now if thay could only make these 4 and 6 cyl. that are in most cars these days sound like this. Even worse the EV’s with no sound at all.
So true Don. I sold my 2014 V-6, 6-speed, rag-top Camaro because of the sound. For a V-6 it was fast and the ride and handling were wonderful but the sound was pathetic. Even changed the exhaust to no avail and thus sold it. Then purchased a 2017 50th 2SS Camaro, auto, rag top, where the exhaust and suspension could be customized to 4 different configurations with the click of a button. It is one of the finest GM muscle cars I have ever owned. Lastly, I do agree GM MUST look at EV exhaust tones! GM might want to go back and try locating the Pontiac exhaust engineers. Now they knew exhaust tones!
Way to long & Boring dialogue, and was he driving a Car??
It’s only boring if you have the attention span of a fly. He said he’s driving to pick up the second truck. This confirms my fly hypothesis.
There’s a reason they call Alex Mr. GM authority… he is always informative and knows his stuff.
Long? Boring? I thought the info was useful and to the point. There are many details that go into these things for those of us who actually own these trucks or are in market for one.
I’m currently hating this exhaust!!!
It sounds good at first, but with this 10 speed transmission you constantly hear it try its best to gargle at each downshift, then back to quite. It’s fine on the highway, but If you plan to stop at all the lights, this upgrade is annoying.
