The fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 made its big debut last October, introducing a lengthy list of updates and changes, including new styling and the the new AT4X off-roader trim level. Now, we’re taking a closer look at both with the following exclusive GM Authority video.
One of the big styling changes for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is a new front fascia, highlighted by a revised front grille with a broad, oval shape. Bookending the new grille are new headlights, which match C-shaped LED lighting signatures with dual square LED high and low beams. The C-shaped signatures also double as the turn signals, turning orange when indicating, while the inner lighting elements are arranged in a vertical layout and provide the primary forward lighting for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Lower in the bumper, we see a pair of smaller LED fog lights, which are mounted adjacent to the red tow hooks and the updated lower bumper insert.
Moving over to the sides, we find amber side markers, which wrap around into the fenders as part of the primary headlight housings, while the sideview mirrors are equipped with perimeter lighting that illuminates areas around the truck to make it easier to see in poorly lit conditions, such as a dark campsite or worksite.
Meanwhile, the rear of the vehicle incorporates tall, vertically oriented taillights, with red side markers that wrap into the rear fenders. Inside the rear-facing taillight housings, we find once again find C-shaped graphics, echoing the design up front, with outer C-shaped graphics complemented by C-shaped inner lighting elements, the latter of which are used for the brake lights. The inner C-shaped brake lights also double as the rear turn signals. Moving further inside the design, we see the backup lights, which incorporate a quartet of clear lighting bits. At the top, we see the Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL).
Further exterior lighting bits include incandescent license plate illuminators in the rear bumper, an LED light in the tailgate controls, and a good deal of lighting for the box as well.
Check out a full breakdown of the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X lighting in the video below, as hosted by GM Authority Executive Editor, Alex Luft:
Under the hood, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X is equipped exclusively with the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Output is routed through the GM 10-speed automatic transmission, with unique drivetrain upgrades like upgraded front and rear e-locking differentials and an Autotrac two-speed transfer case onboard to put it to the ground.
The AT4X trim level also features standard Multimatic DSSV dampers, protective skid plates, 18-inch wheels, and mud terrain tires. Under the skin is the GM T1 platform, while production takes place at GM Silao plant in Mexico and GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana.

Can’t wait to have one of these behind me at night, especially at a stoplight.
Enough of the headlight wars on pick-up trucks!
that is the problem with LED lighting. It is white light that blinds people, unlike the yellow lighting in ol school vehicles. I hate driving at nite anymore. {rural area} get blinded every time vehicle comes at me.
LEDs don’t even have to be bright white like that. They could lower the color temperature.
Obviously they don’t care though.
Would have been complete, if’n it had the led GMC grill emblem.
why don’t the rear backup lights come on when perimeter lighting is turned on?
Still behind the F series and RAM 8-Ball per usual. Why does anyone buy these things?
The new fog lights suck why even have them.
