GM has dropped two of the optional side assist steps that it previously offered on the GMC Sierra 1500 and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks.
The following two pairs of dealer-installed, LPO-level side assist steps are no longer available to order on the GMC Sierra 1500 and GMC Sierra HD (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):
- 4-inch chromed round assist steps (RPO VXJ)
- 4-inch Black round assist steps, LPO (RPO RVS)
The 4-inch chromed round assist steps were available to order on the SLE trim level on both the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, as well as the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra HD. It’s not clear if GM plans to indirectly replace either of these two side assist steps at some point in the future, or if they have simply been dropped from the order book without a pending replacement.
Side assist steps are a popular accessory for modern-day pickups due to their tall ride height, providing an easier way for passengers to enter the vehicle. A wide variety of side assist steps are available for purchase via the GMC Accessories catalog for both the light-duty Sierra 1500, as well as the Sierra HD.
The refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, which began arriving at GM dealers this spring, introduces a redesigned exterior and overhauled cabin to the pickup, along with new technologies like a 13.4-inch display screen and available Super Cruise with trailering capability. Engine options include the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B, 5.3L L84 V8 and 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engines, as well as the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax. The pickup sticks with its familiar GM T1 platform, while production takes place at both the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and GM Silao plant in Mexico.

Assist steps? how about just being able to supply the damn truck i ordered back in January
I keep telling people, now is not the time to be loyal to a dealer… shop online, search dealer inventory, working away from where you are located. Took me a week and a half to locate, buy, and have sitting in my driveway the exact vehicle in the color I wanted. Just look every day and it will show up.
In my case, I was after a 2022 GMC Acadia Denali, AWD, V6 with specific options (trailer towing, etc).
Good Question!
I ordered mine last November. Still have not received it.
Have you considered other makes? I’m not being snide here; I really want to know. I was in the market for a Chevy pickup, but no dealer was in a position to say I’d receive a fully assembled truck; that parts might be missing and that the dealer would install them as available. I went elsewhere, placed an order, and had what I wanted – fully operational – in a month.
I got the round black ones on my 2021 AT4. I find they don’t collect snow, ice and road debris like my older vehicle with the flat wide steps. Prefer the appearance also.
Now if they would make steps that do not rust. Ya, I know, they are the closest item to the snow and road salt But this has been a reoccurring problem since pickup footboards were first invented.
Buy Laverne stainless steel
Don’t buy now or until dealers get some inventories. Dealers are charging MSRP or very close. And there are no rebates right now. Wait till the market cools off.
