Roberto Rempel Named GM Korea’s President And CEO

Two and a half months after promoting Kaher Kazem as the new executive vice president of SAIC-GM in China, General Motors has just announced the new leaders of its operations in South Korea. The automaker has appointed Roberto Rempel as president and CEO of GM Korea, who will replace Kazem effective June 1st from his current position as president of GM Technical Center Korea (GMTCK).

Roberto Rempel

Roberto Rempel will assume the top position of GM Korea after serving in a key role for the subsidiary at the helm of GMTCK – General Motors’ second largest engineering center outside the United States. In his previous role, Rempel successfully led several global vehicle programs such as the Chevy Trailblazer, the Buick Encore GX and the South Korean subsidiary’s business-critical next-generation global crossovers.

“In addition to having extensive engineering background in global product group, Roberto has demonstrated remarkable leadership in GMTCK. We are fortunate to have him leading the team in Korea,” said GM Senior Vice President and President of GM International, Shilpan Amin. “Roberto comes to the role with clear objectives to win more customers in domestic and export markets, deliver a flawless launch of our new global crossover, grow our brands and continue to improve the competitiveness of our operations in Korea,” he added.

The new executive, responsible for leading the subsidiary’s future growth strategy, is optimistic and confident in the success of future launches. “The GM Korea team has successfully launched the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX which are hugely popular with customers in Korea and in export markets. I am confident that our next global vehicle – the compact crossover – will also be a hit with our customers around the world,” said Roberto Rempel.

Notably, Roberto Rempel assumes his new executive role in South Korea after a solid 40-year track record with GM. He began his career with the company in 1982 at the Brazil subsidiary and has since held many leadership roles in product management and vehicle engineering for GM markets around the world. He has been working in the Asian country since 2015 and has served as president of GMTCK since January 2019.

Brian McMurray

GM also announced the appointment of Brian McMurray as the new president of GMTCK, replacing Roberto Rempel effective June 1st. McMurray, currently vice president of engineering and operations for GMTCK, will continue to work closely with Rempel and has extensive engineering experience in several global markets, including the United States, Canada, Australia, India and China.
