GM has revealed the first teaser image of the all-new Buick GL8 Avenir in China, the only country in the world where Buick’s full-size MPV is currently sold. This four-generation GL8 preview shows off a completely reinvented image, as the brand will also introduce a new range-topping version that will become the model family’s new flagship.
The new Buick GL8 Avenir’s world debut in China is imminent, representing the production version of the striking Buick GL8 Flagship Concept presented by GM at the Guangzhou International Motor Show in 2021. The concept model allowed us to imagine a new flagship variant of the Avenir that will be much more luxurious.
The next-generation Buick GL8 Avenir will debut the brand’s evolved “sculptural beauty” design language and reinforce its position as Buick’s flagship in the competitive Chinese market. In fact, SAIC-GM, General Motors’ main joint venture in China, went a step further, stating that this model will open up a new segment of premium MPVs in China and once again elevate the highest level of luxury currently offered by this legendary brand founded in 1899.
The teaser image of the upcoming Buick GL8 Avenir shows some details on the left front end, featuring a massive mesh-patterned grille that covers a large section of the bumper. We can also see the redesigned Matrix LED headlights, and speaking of lighting, the new GL8 will also feature Buick’s new lighting signature with DRL lights that extend vertically and horizontally.
Additionally, the official preview of the next-generation Buick GL8 Avenir shows that the model we’ll see in the near future will feature a two-tone paint design similar to the one featured on the GL8 Flagship Concept. The image released by Buick shows a metallic turquoise painted bumper that could define the entire lower part and a silver upper section. Both colors are visually separated by a horizontal line with the Buick name in the middle area that extends above the headlights to the sides.
The all-new Buick GL8 Avenir will debut in the coming days during a special event that SAIC-GM is preparing to not only showcase this new vehicle, but to showcase its future in China. The automaker confirmed that the new MPV will co-exist with current third- and second-generation models, ranking above the GL8 ES and GL8 Classic.

This may also preview the front end of the Buick Enclave, due for a redesign in 2024. It appears to be similar to the photo of the Buick SUV shown during the 2021 CES.
Lets hope not. Hopefully it stays in China. I guess it works for their taste. I don’t think it works here in the US. It is even more in your face than the Lexus.
Agreed, this is plain ugly from any vantage point.
Good lord that is ugly.
A design not appealing to the eye
Not good!
Ghastly! I love how they’ve labeled it “Flagship”. Of course the Chinese probably don’t know that’s a term rather than a name. It’s completely tacky and has absolutely none of Buick’s DNA from the days when it was an American brand recognizable by sweeping curves, the sweepspear, and ventiports.
If anyone had purposely set out to destroy an automobile brand, they couldn’t have done better than Barra, Simcoe, Reuss, and the rest of the crew have done with Buick…and Cadillac too.
The design to me is good and looks like a more extreme version of the current Toyota Sienna Minivan, the raised and drop-off line along the bottom-rear Passenger windows is an approach that could have been a simple straight line across the entire side, it would have made the Sideview look a whole lot better, overall the design was not meant for the American Market so there is no need to get all up in our feelings about what we’re seeing here.
Buick has been a shadow of it’s former self for decades. To blame current leadership completely ignores the 1980s through the 2010s.
Even during the Opel design years, the brand had a mishmash of different design themes that didn’t exactly say “premium”.
I’m curious to see the full production model as well as how it translates to other future Buick models that will make it to this side of the Pacific.
That is a level of hideous usually reserved for Japanese vehicles!
Sources close to the matter say Buick showed an all-electric Wildcat at the Buick GMC Dealer event in Vegas…
Can you tell us if the “groovy” Buick EV concept teased recently and to be revealed this summer will be called Wildcat?
We’re going to need to know more about this. Just another formless CUV? Sports sedan/coupe? Wagon? (please, please, please be a wagon; I need something to replace my TourX when it eventually kicks the bucket.)
A few points:
1. The all-electric Wildcat was reportedly shown as a concept. It wasn’t an SUV or a crossover… it was described as a car. Additionally, the prototype was equipped with Super Cruise. (Remember Buick teased a Concept back in February that is due to be revealed this Summer).
2. It is also said that the Buick Electra EV was shown alongside the all-electric Wildcat.
3. Buick is preparing to host their annual Buick Brand Day in China sometime toward the end of this week. Media outlets overseas are reporting that there is a lot to expect, including: the launch of Buick’s first Ultium-based EV, the reveal of the new Buick logo, and this all-new GL8.
Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac have all had their moments in GM’s (North American) spotlight. Now, it’s Buick’s turn, and I’m all for it!
Do you have any other details on the vehicle?
Surprisingly, I think it looks nice
GM has in the past said that because a concept didn’t get enough positive reaction, such as the Buick Avenir or the Buick Avista, they weren’t produced. Given the odd design and comments shared here about the Buick GL8 Avenir Flagship, how can they release this as-is?
What happen to the Buick Enspire concept that I have been waiting for since 2017 ??? What Happen GM???
We technically have it with the new Envision. I don’t think the Enspire was anything more than a design concept.
As for the design of the GL8, I think Buick is leaning hard into Chinese EV design trends because the brand isn’t doing too hot these days in China. Buick China kind of fumbled the EV football with their current EV offerings and needs a reboot to stay in the conversation. I think VW may have to do that as well because their ID models are not cutting it there.
I could use a good snow plow for the driveway & beyond. That front end looks perfect for the job. Jesus, Mary & Joseph that qualifies for the most hideous “design” since Elon Musks EV truck. This thread is almost unanimous on this ugly piece of excrement a very rare occasion. Wanna bet Queen MaryB & her clueless court in those hideous Ivory Towers in Detroit ignore the obvious conclusion here???
Hopefully, the Toyota Darth Vader grill will disappear also that ugly rear end looks like it backed into a bulldozer. Difficult to believe that both the front and rear are SO BLOODY UGLY.
Not looking good for Buick if that’s what they’re calling their “flagship”!
Obviously this is Chevy’s and Cadillac’s ugly sister. The designers must use a crumpled beer can as a model ?
What the.!?!…Good God. I think this was supposed to be posted on April 1st. And to think, a group of people (or aliens) were on GM payroll to design this hot garbage. Excuse me while I puke. Be right back….unreal.
What an ugly bar of dove sope with wheels.
I think the GL8 Flagship Concept looks very modern, stylish and expensive – but I must admit that I don’t care for the two-tone paint effect, so I hope that it will be offered with an exterior in one solid color as well. The front end of the GL8 Avenir shown in the latest teaser seems okay, but, again, I want the color to run throughout the body, the front and the back. For those who were tired of the Buick waterfall grille styling, this is something different, for sure. Meanwhile, if you look closely at the Buick SUV EV in the photo taken at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show, it has the front end and uptick near the back window that the GL8 Avenir Concept does and appears to be all in one silver color. I’m unsure if GM stated that both Buick EVs in the photo would be sold in the US and / or China. What if the Electra is fairly close to the 2020 Electra Concept; if the Velite is the smaller Buick EV in the 2021 CES photo; and if the concept they have teased to be shown this summer is a “groovy” Wildcat?
Please keep this POS in China! Good grief, this is one of the ugliest POS that I have ever seen. I have seen totaled cars that look 1000% better than this garbage.
Great f’ing job “stylists”. LOL!!!
