GM, with the help of its fleet software partner Geotab, has announced it will begin offering its fleet tracking technology to government agencies in the United States.
GM’s fleet tracking solution developed with Geotab allows fleet operators to track and receive information from their vehicles using the pre-embedded OnStar module that is found in most modern-day GM vehicles. With this latest announcement, this technology will be available to government agencies in the United States, allowing them to benefit from this easy-to-use fleet tracking and data-sharing platform. Geotab says it has also secured sourcing contracts for a number of government agencies to help streamline the purchasing process for government agencies interested in its fleet management products.
“Our joint solution will help government clients optimize fleets, track fuel consumption, enhance safety, achieve strong compliance and improve productivity to make quicker, better-informed and environmentally-minded decisions,” Geotab Vice President Connected Car and Platform Solutions, Sherry Calkins, said of the company’s newly expanded partnership with GM.
Calkins also said this move will also allow U.S. government agencies to access the Geotab Marketplace, where various fleet management features and apps can be downloaded to enhance their fleet management strategies. Apps in the marketplace include engine diagnostics programs, a driver safety scoring app and a fuel tracker. A more thorough list of the apps on Geotab Marketplace is available via its website.
Michelle Calloway, Director, OnStar Business Solutions, said the company’s fleet management software can also save government agencies money, as many are already operating fleets with vehicles that have OnStar modules.
“Because Geotab Integrated Solution for GM leverages our OnStar embedded module without the need for additional hardware, governments now have a turn-key connected-vehicle solution, saving them both time and money,” she said.
This fleet tracking software will work with any Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC fleet vehicles that have an OnStar module.

Another weapon that can be used against you. Your boss tracking your location, speed and driving habits. Our privacy is gone. I guarantee that this ability is in every GM vehicle in the future. Want it or not. Our every moves are being tracked, guaranteed. Don’t forget about the last spending spree DC had. It is now mandatory to have factory breathalyzer installed in vehicles, from the factory. I don’t condone drinking and driving, but, does anyone else think that more control is the answer?
