Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Nascar Camaro ZL1, nabbed his first victory of the 2022 Cup Series season at Dover Motor Speedway on Monday, after rain washed out Sunday’s event.
Elliott and the No. 9 Camaro showed the way for the last 53 laps after pulling past the No. 47 Camaro of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Elliott didn’t look back once, and came home with a 2.577-second lead over the second place car of Stenhouse.
While Elliott clung to the first points position for much of 2022, the No. 9 team’s season has been far from storybook. “Just had some good circumstances, finally,” a relieved Elliott said in Victory Lane after the race. “Just really appreciate [crew chief] Alan [Gustafson] and our entire team for sticking with it. We had some tough races over the last four or five months and just great to get NAPA back to Victory Lane.”
Overall, Chevrolet had a decent day. Stenhouse in the No. 47 Camaro finished second, while last week’s winner, Ross Chastain in the No. 1 Camaro, took home third after battling hard for position with the No. 19 Toyota TRD Camry of Martin Truex Jr. On the last lap, Truex threw his No. 19 high in an attempt to make the pass for third, contacting the back of the No. 1 Camaro as Chastain moved to block him. While Chastain continued on, the contact caused Truex to get loose and spin out. Truex was scored 12th at the line.
“Just racing hard, and I crowded [Truex] up,” Chastain explained after the race. “I should have left him more of a lane.”
Overall, there were 12 cautions and 17 lead changes among 10 drivers during Monday’s race. Interestingly, Elliott’s victory at Dover marks his first oval track victory since taking the championship at Phoenix Raceway in November 2020. His two wins in 2021 were at road courses – he won at COTA and Road America, respectively.

Kind of nice to see Chevy Camaro holding their own. I can’t remember where there any Toyota or Fords. No, I remember they all went to pit road to hide..
