The GM Authority Take

Combined Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales further strengthened the Bow Tie brand’s leadership of the mainstream full-size SUV segment. Combined with their corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, GM controlled three-fourths of the competitive set.

As we’ve noted before, Chevy’s SUVs were overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year as the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and 2021 Chevy Suburban, along with the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe refresh prototype

Despite the ongoing sales dominance, GM is already testing a refreshed 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Suburban. In March, we caught the a prototype of the refreshed 2024 Tahoe undergoing testing. The upcoming model will feature a new front fascia and revised rear fascia, both of which are covered in thick camouflage in this particular prototype, which appears to be the sporty-looking RST trim level. Inside we expect some changes as well, including larger infotainment screens and other improvements.

2023 Toyota Sequoia

Unsurprisingly, rivals continue grasping for a piece of this very profitable segment with new models and variants, but with varying results. The latest entry is the fully redesigned 2023 Toyota Sequoia that was revealed in January as a new rival to the regular-wheelbase Tahoe and Yukon. The new Sequoia is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L

In April, Stellantis debuted the Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L, with the two extended wheelbase full-size SUVs set to rival GM’s own extended-length offerings, including the Suburban and Yukon XL (rivaling the Wagoneer L), and the Cadillac Escalade ESV (rivaling the Grand Wagoneer L).

Speaking of Jeep, the steady rise in sales volume of the regular-length Wagoneer is certainly worthy of note. Time will tell if the Jeep entries will sustain their existing growth rate, or if interest will taper as pent-up demand is satisfied.

  2. The sequoia is the only one with a solid rear axle ,rest have ndependent rear axle “ for a smooth ride and leg room for the 3rd row “ just wish one could buy one without the 3rd row , for us who like cargo space payload and have no need or want a 3row family wagon

  4. These full-sized SUVs are Corvette are what GM does best. Toss trucks in & you’ve got a majority of GM N American profit. GM’s other ICE offerings can be great (Trailblazer, Envision) or bland (Nox, Malibu, XT5).
Amazing how Yucon beats Ford. Curious to see how Wagoneer sub brand works out.

  6. Unbelieveable that people are buying these Explorer knock-offs. GM definitely lost direction and identity, must have hired the kids from Ford to do these new vans. Doesn’t matter as the First on the Block people will buy anything. Very insulting to truck history to see the Z71 badges on these barges.
