Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Spark sales during the first quarter of 2022 place the subcompact hatchback in second place in its segment when ranked by sales volume. First place went to the Mitsubishi Mirage with 4,917 units, while the Spark moved a mere 278 units, and the discontinued Fiat 500 moved just one unit.
Sales Numbers - Mainstream City Cars - Q1 2022 - United States
MODEL | Q1 22 / Q1 21 | Q1 22 | Q1 21 | Q1 22 SHARE | Q1 21 SHARE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
MITSUBISHI MIRAGE | -29.07% | 4,917 | 6,932 | 95% | 38% |
CHEVROLET SPARK | -97.58% | 278 | 11,505 | 5% | 62% |
FIAT 500 | -75.19% | 1 | 4 | 0% | 0% |
TOTAL | -71.82% | 5,196 | 18,441 |
As one would expect, the Spark posted just a five percent segment share to the Mirage’s 95 percent and the 500’s zero percent.
The mainstream city car segment contracted 72 percent to 5,196 units during Q1 2022, meaning Spark sales underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The idling of Spark production as a result of the ongoing components shortage has resulted in a situation where the model saw extremely low inventory, thereby leading to the terrible sales performance seen during the first quarter of 2021. In fact, GM decided to allocate supplies, including but not limited to microchips, to more profitable models such as full-size truck and SUVs.
As first reported by GM Authority, the Chevy Spark will be discontinued after the 2022 model year, and its production capacity at the GM Changwon plant in South Korea will be converted for an upcoming “crossover coupe” Chevrolet model that will likely carry the Trax name. Note that the upcoming “crossover coupe” Trax will be entirely different from the current model of the same name, riding on a different architecture and using a different set of engines.
The demise of the Spark will result in a further contraction of Chevy’s offerings in the U.S. market that aren’t trucks, crossovers, or SUVs. With the departure of the Spark, Chevy’s only passenger-car offerings in the U.S. will be the Chevy Camaro, Chevy Corvette C8, and the Chevy Malibu sedan. The Malibu will be sunset around 2024, while the Camaro will be dropped in 2023.
It’s similarly worth noting that, following the Spark’s discontinuation, the least-expensive vehicle in the Bow Tie brand’s U.S. lineup would have been the current Chevy Trax crossover. However, it’s currently unclear how Chevy will position the redesigned “crossover coupe” model, as the current Trax will go out of production at the end of 2022 model year. Another affordable Chevrolet model and passenger car, the Sonic, was discontinued after the 2020 model year. On a related note, the Spark’s exit will also leave the the Chevy Trailblazer as the only other model to offer the outdoor-focused Activ trim.
Chevy’s complete exit from the city car, subcompact and compact passenger car segments in the U.S. and Canada leaves room for the automaker’s upcoming electric vehicle offerings, including the aforementioned Trax “crossover coupe,” along with the Chevy Blazer EV and Equinox EV crossovers, both set to arrive in 2023.

So sad to read those words. I can only hope and pray that GM comes out with some other EV sedans that are not SUV/CUV’s or trucks. Please, PLEASE GM bring out a Buick Electra EV car. I promise I will buy it.
GM will eventually be reduced to Chevrolet and Cadillac. GMC and Buick are redundant, especially when there are no coupes or sedans. GM doesn’t understand that by eliminating coupes and sedans, they are driving customers away from them, and straight towards Toyota and Honda.
Leafsland: So true! The empty suits at GM don’t get it. Terrible! 👎
Leafsland: Totally agree with you and AladdineSane. I’ve said this very thing before on GMA and was blasted with down votes because I dared to say GMC should be killed off. What a joke. In fact, just last week on another article I said that GM should go to just Chevrolet and Cadillac. Put GMC’s hottest products under Chevy (although they really already have them all) and give Buick’s best to Cadillac. Why keep them? And this is coming from a guy who feels Buick is the best brand GM has! But if you (GM) aren’t going to advertise, give new product and even try to make them work, why keep them around? And for those who say GMC is a cash cow, yes that is correct. And the models that make them a cash cow would continue to make that money under the Chevrolet brand. Drop the High Country trim on Chevy and make Denali the top. Make Hummer the Chevrolet Hummer. Take the Buick Encore GX and put even nicer interior and a bigger engine and give it to Cadillac as a base CUV entry.
When you look at it, this would make perfect sense. Ford is and has been just Ford and Lincoln for a long time now. You have Toyota/Lexus. Honda/Acura. Nissan/Infiniti. Smart/MB. Mini/BMW. So why not just Chevrolet/Cadillac? Then take the massive savings from R & D, advertising and dealer support and put that investment back into the two remaining brands. Make Chevy even better than it is now and make Cadillac the king.
I definitely agree. Like I was saying, if GM doesn’t want to build any coupes and sedans, might as well just have Chevrolet and Cadillac. You’re right about saving money from all the extra advertising and paperwork and the other things they can cut out after reducing from 4 brands to 2.
Buick is hot in China. I see truckloads of Buicks and some Cadillacs where I’m located. I wouldn’t buy a caddy as they’ve been poor on reliability among other things for over a decade. Buick has been top tier mostly in that regard. I am sad by the sedan phase outs which has forced my hand to keep the one I have for longer. I really wanted another sedan with flex fuel and a supercharger ala Park Avenue Ultra. I’m not sure if Acura or Lexus will be in my wheelhouse when I rip the bandaid and get rid of the LaCrosse. Toyota has had a nasty run on design for the Lexus and regular Toyota models. They are sinfully ugly. Honda needs to figure out the interiors still on a bunch of models. Those two brands also need to learn how to keep up with tech updates on cars as well. Toyota especially has been a laggard here as they only recently offered anything worth a sh.. for stock infotainment. It’s funny because when I had a 2000 avalon it had side airbags at the time which was ahead of the curve. Weird.
gm is just screwing anyone who buys from them. Low inventory and high mark ups. No thanks. Purchased my 19 Stingray and my 19 Silverado a huge discounts. Now that good deals have gone away so will many customers including me.
Daniel: I certainly get that the car prices are bad right now. But why are you saying it like it’s just GM? In the area I live and work, here’s just a few other brands and what they are doing. Actually, it’s not the brands, but the dealers.
Toyota: Selling nearly every model well over MSRP. I’ve had auto brokers tell me as much as $8,000 over.
Honda: Same thing.
Volvo and Mazda (where I work): from MSRP up to 5 grand over MSRP.
Ford: Some trucks and SUV’s selling for up to 30 grand over.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about. I picked up a new 22 Enclave a couple weeks ago. I got a 500 discount off MSRP unlike the others in the area that are over or at best strict MSRP.They also bumped up my trade value to cover an additional 500 on a B2B warranty for an extra year. Included one free year of premium onstar with data package and they tinted the front two windows with ceramic tint all included. Pretty sure I’m the only Avenir in Rich Garnet Metallic in my large area ATM for the time being too. I also get money off with the GM credit card.
I assume your dealers in your nearby vicinity are horrible. I have a Buick dealer near me I never buy from as they’re horrible. We’ll never buy a car from them in the foreseeable future. You could always join the Toyota club and back up traffic in the left lane. lmao.
We would like to hear from GM Managers…
Finally was able to find a new 2022 Chevrolet Spark LT, purchased great little car, great gas mileage 38 plus per gallon.
Sad day for the Spark.
GM has had no concern for the buying consumer for some time!!
