The GM Authority Take

The Chevy Low Cab Forward (LCF) are medium-duty trucks that are the result of a partnership between GM and Isuzu Motors announced back in June 2015. The trucks were developed and are built by Isuzu, with GM providing some components, including gasoline engines.

The Chevy LCF is offered as 3500, 4500, 5500, and 6500 models. The LCF 3500, 4500, and 5500 models are rebadged Isuzu N-Series, while the 6500XD is a much larger truck, being a rebadged Isuzu F-Series.

The Chevy Low Cab Forward trucks are available with various engine choices. On the gasoline side, the models were previously available with the GM 6.0L L96 Vortec gasoline engine for 2017-2020 models. That engine was subsequently replaced with the 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine for 2021 and newer models. An Isuzu 5.2L four-cylinder engine, good for 215 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque, was offered in the 4500, 5500 and 6500 series trucks, but it was replaced with a Cummins diesel displacing 6.7L, rated at 260 horsepower and 660 pound-feet in the Chevy Low Cab Forward 6500 for the 2022 model year.

New standard equipment for the 2022 model year includes LED headlamps and a new interior color scheme with a gray/blue cross pattern seat fabric. The 2022 Low Cab Forward 6500XD also features a redesigned front end.

And as first reported by GM Authority, the Chevy Low Cab Forward family will soon expand to include the LCF 7500XD, which will feature a 21,000-pound rear GAWR and an Allison 2500 RDS transmission. Set to launch for the 2023 model year, the 7500XD will be powered by the aforementioned 6.7L Cummins six-cylinder engine (RPO code LCB) rated at the same 260 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque.

At its core, the Chevy 7500XD will essentially be the same vehicle as the Isuzu FVR – which is the Class 7 variant of the Isuzu F-Series commercial truck on which the Chevy LCF 6500XD truck is based. As such, the Chevy LCF 7500XD will be produced at the same Isuzu Spartan Motors plant in Charlotte, Michigan that builds the Isuzu F-Series trucks as well as the current Chevy LCF 6500XD.

The Low Cab Forward trucks are a key part of Chevy’s strategy to deliver a “complete solution” for commercial fleet customers, ranging from light-duty midsize pickups (Chevy Colorado) and light-duty full-size pickups (Silverado 1500) to full-size heavy-duty pickups (Silverado HD) and medium-duty chassis cabs (Silverado MD).

This “complete solution” approach is vital for GM, since it keeps fleet customers within the Chevrolet family, rather than purchasing vehicle from other brands, and servicing them outside the Chevy dealer network. In addition, the LCF models provide incremental sales volume and revenue for GM, without significant investment, effort, or risk.

  1. I wonder if the 6500 and 7500 models will eventually offer the Cummins 6.7 ‘fuel agonistic’ gasoline and CNG engines.
