Cadillac CT4 sales during the first quarter of 2022 placed the small luxury sedan in third place in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The CT4 moved up to third in spite of a 28 percent drop to 1,893 units. The Audi A3 followed in fourth with a three percent bump to 1,368 units while Mercedes-Benz’s two entries, the A-Class and CLA-Class, took the last two spots with a 66 percent drop to 1,126 and a 55 percent decrease to 1,064 units, respectively.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac CT4 sales moved it up to a respectable third place during the first quarter of 2022 despite idled production in the most recent past at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan, where the CT4 is produced alongside the Cadillac CT5 and Chevy Camaro. That resulted in nearly non-existent inventory at the dealer level, preventing shoppers from purchasing the vehicle. Luckily, production finally resumed in October 2021, which is very welcome news for Cadillac’s small luxury sedan, especially the range-topping 2022 CT4-V Blackwing sedan that launched in 2021. However, GM paused production again for a week in April due to an undisclosed parts shortage.

Cadillac rivals continue to assert competitive pressure in the segment with refreshed and new models. Honda’s luxury arm, Acura, unveiled the Integra Prototype as an upcoming CT4 rival, which will go on sale this summer to replace the ILX. The sporty five-door hatch will be aimed at enthusiasts with its available six-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, and turbocharged 1.5-liter VTEC engine. That said, it will compete with the “regular” CT4 range, and not the much higher-performing CT4-V and CT4-V Blackwing.

Meanwhile, Mercedes will soon discontinue the A-Class, leaving the Tri-Star brand with one entry – the A-Class’ platform mate, the CLA-Class.

Cadillac’s offering in “regular” CT4 guise, high-performance CT4-V dress, and ultra-high-performance CT4-V Blackwing clothing remains a highly-compelling and, arguably, the most complete offering. Addressing parts shortages and resulting production delays will be key to meeting demand to finally move CT4 sales to the top.

  1. According to Donlen, initial orders of 2023 models was to start on May 5, with production to begin July 11. It was previously reported that the CT4, (as well as the CT5), would undergo a refresh for the 2023 model year. I am wondering if the parts and production issues that have affected the ’21 and ’22 models will cause the ’23 refresh to be delayed. Anyone have any insight on this?

  3. Serious question. Will we really even see any 2022 CT4 and CT5 models? I see where dealers are still waiting on a few 2021 units to roll in. I may be wrong, but don’t recall seeing any 2022 models around yet and here they are already taking the 2023 orders. Hmmm.

Anyhow, back a few months ago I talked with the manager at the Caddy dealer where I purchased my 2020 CT4. He told me about a $1,000 incentive that would be guaranteed if I placed an order for a 2022 (CT5 this time). So I placed an order for a black CT5 Premium Luxury so that I could get the leather and real wood trim AND I ordered it specifically without the stupid sunroof. My plan was to keep the Volvo S60 till the CT5 came in and then either sell the Volvo or trade it in. Well, the offer I got on selling the Volvo was too good, so that’s when I sold it and was able to find the 2021 Chevy Malibu LT for a really great deal. When I got the Malibu, it was just due to the great price and thought it would be only a stop-gap car till the CT5 arrived. However, I’m really liking my Malibu a lot and who knows what I will do if/when that CT5 actually arrives.

At this point, maybe it will be a 2023 model and I’ll sell the Malibu and go back to my Caddy!
