The refreshed 2023 Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup truck was just caught testing on public roads, giving us an early look at Stellantis’ Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra competitor.
This particular example of the 2023 Ram refresh presents a four-door crew cab body style and dually (dual-rear-wheel) drivetrain. It’s uncertain which trim level this prototype is supposed to be, but either way, it is equipped with the Night Edition package, which incorporates a range of exterior upgrades and aesthetic enhancements. Highlights of the package include black exterior badging, black headlight bezels, body-color door handles, a black grille, painted front and rear bumpers, and tow hooks, among other bits and pieces.
Of note for the 2023 Ram refresh is a new ram air hood treatment, seen on this prototype covered in swirling black-and-white camouflage. Also check out the sideview mirrors, which will be revised for the 2023-model-year refresh, and can be seen here covered in heavy black camo covers.
Under the hood, this refreshed 2023 Ram dually is equipped with the 6.7L I6 Cummins turbodiesel engine, although it’s unclear if this particular model is running the high-output engine variant, rated at 420 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet of torque, or the standard engine variant, rated at 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque.
Further changes are likely in store for the refresh as well. Pickup trucks are highly lucrative for GM at the moment, as well as GM’s rivals, Ford and Ram. Ram has been making some inroads on the light-duty and heavy-duty segments as of late, and this new refresh will add some fuel to the fire.
Looking ahead, GM is set to introduce a refresh for its heavy-duty pickup trucks with the launch of the 2024 model year, while Ford will refresh its HD models for the 2023 model year.
During Q1 of the 2022 calendar year, Ford led the segment in sales, with 140,701 units sold. However, combined sales for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra puts GM at the top with 177,724 units sold. Ram sold 127,116 units during the same time period. Note that these figures include both light-duty, heavy-duty, and medium-duty models.
