The 1957 model year marked the beginning of the third generation for the Oldsmobile 88 and the first year for the upscale Super 88 trim. Smoother, more refined styling was backed by the 371 cubic-inch V8 with available J2 triple two-barrel carburetion rated at 300 horsepower. The Super 88 could be had with either a three-speed manual or four-speed Jetaway Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. A deeply recessed steering wheel was added as a safety feature.
Our feature Oldsmobile Super 88 convertible is brilliant in Alcan White with red accents. One of just 7,128 built for the 1957 model year. It is equipped with the 371 cubic-inch V8 fed by the optional J2 Tri-Power carbs topped by the Batwing air cleaner. Transmitting power rearward is the Jetaway Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic gearbox. Dual exhausts exit through the rear bumper.
The Oldsmobile Super 88 appears to have had a decent quality respray. Chrome bumpers and trim retain excellent shine without signs of pitting or patina. The front fenders are topped with chrome airplane-shaped trim, indicative of jet age exuberance. Painted steel wheels sport full polished hubcaps, and roll on Goodyear wide white rubber. Fender skirts add a bit of formality to the rear wheel wells.
The Super 88 is well optioned with power steering, power brakes, power convertible top with red top boot, pushbutton radio, and a bold red and white two-tone leather interior. The brilliant red bench seat shows little sign of use or wear. Plush carpets look recent, and the dash pad shows no fading or shrinking. Highly polished chrome trim divides the upper and lower portions of the dash, with sharp, clear gauges and controls in the center. Atop the dash is a centrally-mounted clock, and on the driver’s side is a traffic light viewer.Â
This attractive Oldsmobile Super 88 will cross the Mecum Auctions block at their 35th Indy Spring Classic May 13th through the 21st.

I have seen this car on Mecum web site dozens of times. Seems like it is at one of their auctions once a year. Thing about watching Mecum it seems like the same cars over and over.
Beautiful car. Olds in my opinion had the best overall quality of all the GM brands. Wish they were still around.
Those were the days when, although most were built on the same platforms, there was differentiation. A Buick was a Doctor’s car, the Olds for the sporting, Pontiac pre-Knudsen a school teacher car.
Then, GM homogenized the offerings to the point that you bought the one with the equipment you wanted at the best offered price.
Back then, my extended family was Chrysler, Studebaker, and Hudson. But, seeing the cars the neighbors had, it was a tossup between Olds and Buick being the best.
What a fabulous example of Oldsmobile styling at its peak. The ’57 took the particular styling themes Oldsmobile had been using from the early 50’s to their highest levels.
1957 was a year of major styling changes at each of the Big 3 automakers. At GM, its most radical changes were done at Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac. Ironically, GM’s offerings did not receive the sort of public response that was expected. Instead, people were wowed by Chrysler Corporation’s ultra-radical lineup with its tall fins at the rear and low, flat rooflines.
And the sales success of Chrysler’s ’57 lineup had its effect at GM, best seen two model years later in 1959….
Outstanding style in 1957 ,drove only Oldsmobile’s over the years ,, the best of the bunch wish they were still around today ..
My first car was a 57 Olds Super 88 ,black 2 door coup, with black ,red , white interior and silver piping trim. The side strip was red reflective tape and 57 Plymouth hub caps and Firestone white walled tires.
I sold it for $1,800 so I could but a deposits down on a 65 Chet Corvette ,Nassua blue convertable.
I wish I still had both.
Nice car I wish it was mine lol 😆
