Stop-Sale Order On Chevy Silverado HD And MD, GMC Sierra HD Duramax Diesel

General Motors has issued a stop-sale order on certain units of the 2022 Chevy Silverado HD, GMC Sierra HD, and Chevy Silverado MD (4500HD / 5500HD / 6500HD) equipped with the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, GM Authority has learned.

According to GM Authority sources, affected units may experience a hydro-lock / no start issue. Hydrolock is when an engine cylinder is filled with liquid, preventing the piston from completing a full stroke. The GM reference number for the stop-sale order is N222362910.

With GM issuing this new stop-sale order for certain units of the 2022 Chevy Silverado HD, GMC Sierra HD, and Chevy Silverado MD (4500HD / 5500HD / 6500HD), affected vehicles cannot be delivered or sold until further notice. What’s more, new vehicles subject to this stop-sale order must be held and not delivered to customers, dealer-traded, released to auction, used for demonstration purposes, or any other dealer use, until further instructions are received.

Earlier in the month, GM Authority reported that GM was poised to repurchase certain units of the chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD due to apparent quality issues with the 6.6L L5P V8 turbodiesel Duramax engine. Although GM has agreed to replace affected trucks, replacement vehicles are subject to feature constraints as a result of the ongoing global microchip shortage, which limits the availability of features like heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, heated steering wheels, and Front And Rear Park Assist.

As a reminder, the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax is rated at 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, enabling a maximum towing capacity of 36,000 pounds in properly configured Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD models.

6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax

The 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax is produced at the DMax Ltd. engine plant in Moraine, Ohio as part of a joint venture between GM and Isuzu Diesel Services of America, Inc. The facility has produced over 2 million Duramax diesel engines since 2000. The facility began production of the L5P engine in 2016 for the 2017 model year.

Now it’s all about electric crap. Look if everybody could even afford an electric car our electric grid could not handle it. Hydrogen power is the way to go. Nuclear power plants are a disaster just waiting to kill us. Look at Chernobyl, years after the accident Soviet soldiers recently dogged in and some died from radiation poisoning. Fukushima was a disaster killing off half the Pacific Ocean, corals dolphins fish etc. Nuclear power is the most dirty energy source ever created. Now this ghastly caused dead ares in the sea dead phitoplankton means now sea life and only bacteria.

          1. Chernobyl was a TERRIBLE reactor design. Meanwhile the US Navy has been running nuclear reactors without any major incidents for over 65 years. It can be done if you have the right design and properly trained operators. The real future is the development and implementation of Fusion nuclear power though. Virtually unlimited clean energy.

            1. No, you don’t look at the direct disasters that have happened in the United Stares alone. Diablo canyon, Ca., San Onofre, Ca. Have caused cancer in humans which live a few miles away from the power plants. Thousands of Dolphins, whales and seals have died from these power plants alone. I live close to the ocean and had to help remove Dead Sea animals from the beaches. Marine biologist from scripps institute were making biopsies and concluded radiation deaths of the sea animals. This is why California closed both Diablo canyon and San onofre nuclear power plants. These power plants all leaked highly toxic cesium 134, stonium and other toxic radioactive materials,
Into our environment. No, nuclear power is not the answer. I will Labor Day and night to keep both Diablo canyon and San onofre closed forever. It’s obvious you don’t live near the ocean and you don’t care about the past Fukushima recent disasters, which had the most updated reactors and cooling technologies.

                1. Look it’s not about killing birds it’s about the survival of the human race. You kill the ocean you kill the human race. We cannot exist without the sea. Even China is converting their Nuclear power to hydrogen powered electric plants. General Electric, Enron, and Fluor corporation have all admitted they cannot design safe Nuclear power plants subjected to mother nature’s earth quake’s and Hurricanes. But, clean coal, and Hydrogen power can be more safe if used effectively and safe. Furthermore, the real future is solar energy for cars. No cost in fuel or Toxic electric batteries.

The highly technical and precise Germans have always considered peoples to the East of them to be crude, inferior, and undesirable. However this thinking failed Germany in World War 2. The Russians and peoples to the East of Germany are a tough lot. These people have the brainpower and wherewithal, only their political system and it’s corruption has stiffled them.

I would never bet against the Ukranians, Bellorussians, and Pols. A tough lot.

  19. Most likely diesel fuel leaking into the cylinders after shut down and then can’t restart. Happened to me years ago on a stationary Cat engine (siphoning) but the fuel in the cylinder eventually made it through the rings and into the crankcase. The oil got so diluted that it ruined the bearings and the engine had to be rebuilt at a cost of $15k 20 years ago.

    1. Old School:

Your comment and assessment as to this issue is absolutely spot on. You get an A+ for this.

This is a major mega problem. New fuel pump and black box chips.
Cummins went to Motorola to design the electronics in their fuel delivery system to meet EPA standards.
Maybe GM should go to Bosch or Nippon Denso. I see the complexity of this issue to take a few months to resolve. Perhaps six months.

It’s all about pollution or emission controls which has driven every diesel engine maker nuts.

These affected vehicles are big cash cows for GM and their dealers. Really sorry to see this issue.

I sadly watched Caterpillar have issues with their ACCERT system. Caterpillar is a great metalworker, but when it comes to electronics they take a back seat and rely on electronic vendors. Even Deere goes to vendors for their electronics, as Deere is also a great metalworker.

Cummins was smart going to Motorola. They are now King of the on-highway diesel engine hill. The fuel delivery system in a diesel engine is it’s heart and brain. Clessie Cummins RIP, will tell you this.

    2. Nope. It’s coolant according to docs on the NHTSA site. Apparently, there was a casting issue with the block and they’re warping in service.

      Reply
      1. Sam:

Is the 6.6 gray iron engine block different for the HD and MD series of trucks versus the 6.6 gray iron engine block used in the half ton pickups? To me the 6.6 gray iron engine block would be the same across the board.

Also it’s very strange that quality control would not pick up a casting problem when sampled blocks were measured on the Granite measuring and check tables along with sampled hard run tests of assembled engines.

I’m still going with Old Schools diagnosis. Most plausible.

        Reply
        1. The engine is entirely the same for HD and MD trucks, just derated in HD. I wonder if the casting issue is inside the block where it’s more difficult to discover. But I also question what’s going on with quality control. It’s like GM just trusts their suppliers to do QC. How did all the bad lifters get past them on the gas engines?

          Reply
          1. Cole: Manufacturers such as GM and CAT have a quality control checking department inside both their receiving assembly plants and receiving parts warehouses.

Cummins has never made their own block and head castings. Caterpillar now has a casting vendor in Mexico. Offshore and outside USA foundries are popular with USA manufacturers to skirt EPA regulations which are brutal for gray iron and steel casting plants.

The regs for casting plants and their emissions are non existent in Mexico, China and India. These countries have captured the castings business.

Starrett has a digital measuring probe specific to all aspects of IC engine block and head measuring. It is so fine and precise it can measure a gnats ass. I’m sure GM is equipped as such.

Old School has hit the nail on the head with the fuel delivery issue. Did you know that there are several high pressure mini squirts for each piston cycle monitored and measured by a high speed digital chip? This is where the issue lays. Flooding of the combustion chamber by one of the high pressure sequenced mini squirts delivering too much diesel fuel.

GM worked great until a valve dropped into the cylinder. Cab had to come off to get the head off. DEF issues,
Personally the GM was the best to drive long distance. Stable and tracked straight. Even with a heavy load (Trailer) it was a great ride.
This buy back sounds like a head gasket issue. Or it could be an injector issue. Considering the cab has to come off to replace a head gasket that might be the issue. Big job….
