One of the more attention-grabbing aspects of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 is its tri-motor powertrain, which produces over 1,000 horsepower and enables the 9,000-pound pickup to accelerate from a standstill to highway speed in three seconds flat. But while much has been said of the impressive tri-motor powertrain, technical details on it are still few-and-far-between, so let’s take a close look at what makes the GMC Hummer EV go.
More information on the GMC Hummer EV Edition 1’s motors was recently provided by GM via its Techlink website. Interestingly, the automaker says all three motors used in the GMC Hummer EV are identical, with the automaker electing not to use different motors for the front and rear axles. The two rear motors are housed within the same casing and together produce 492 kW (or 660 U.S. horsepower), while the front motor sits alone and makes 270 kW (362 U.S. horsepower). That amounts to a total output of around 1,022 horsepower, which GM rounds down for its estimated output of 1,000 horsepower.
Additionally, all three of these motors produce roughly 380 pound-feet of torque, the automaker says, which amounts to a torque output of 1,140 pound-feet. GM recently told the media the torque figure is 1,200 pound-feet, although it seems likely the automaker was providing a rough estimate. Either way, we’re sure Hummer EV owners are more than happy with the vehicle’s torque output.
The TechLink post also provided some background on GM’s claim that the GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 produces 11,500 pound-feet of torque. As many readers will already know, this is a wheel torque figure that multiplies the actual torque through the drive unit gear ratios and not how much torque the Hummer EV’s motors are making at the output shaft.

Less powerful versions of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup will begin to hit the market once the production of the Edition 1 concludes this year. The Hummer EV3Xwill arrive this fall with a tri-motor setup producing 800 horsepower, followed by the EV2Xin the spring of 2023 and the base EV2 in early 2024. Both the EV2 and EV2Xwill have a two-motor powertrain producing 625 horsepower and 7,400 pound-feet of wheel torque, although the EV2X will have around 300 miles of range, while the EV2‘s range will sit at around 250 miles.

So basically, the rich can get 1 and normal people will have to wait for used stuff.. I bet the best it will do with milage is 175. Does anybody know how many chips this thing is going to need???
You think it can only do half of the claimed mileage? What is this based off of? GMs current EVs surpass the ratings typically.
They would be opening themselves up to not only embarrassment (they do that anyways) but loads of lawsuits.
Old farm boy… Let the rich have their toys… I will wait until GM can make an EV pickup truck 50,000 dollars with a 400-500 mile range… Then I will consider an EV truck! Until then ICE rules the roost!
Get the Fird F-150 Lightning.
I agree with something from each of these comments and how many chips will these EVs need so why don’t they hold off on all this electric stuff and be able to complete the gas powered stuff until this chip shortage stuff is over! I’m a GM guy but those lightning trucks from the 90s were fast! They are going to make a supercharged Escalade in 2023 so why can’t they offer a supercharged Silverado with 6.2 and offer that? Oh well I went to a car show in Bakersfield last month and Eric Carr bought the Hummer EV that was on display at the show so there is something out there for all of us if you have the money. I’m glad he likes GM stuff too. 👍
