The 2022 GMC Savana is the nineteenth model year for the nameplate, arriving with just a handful of minor changes and updates following the introduction of a new gasoline-powered V8 engine for the 2021 model year. Now, GM Authority is taking a closer look at the 2022 GMC Savana with an in-depth examination of the van’s towing capacity ratings.
Let’s kick things off with a brief rundown of the 2022 GMC Savana’s powertrain offerings, starting with the atmospheric 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine. Peak output for the V6 comes to 276 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 298 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm, with standout features including direct injection, variable valve timing, and an aluminum block. Handling the cog swaps is the GM eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 GMC Savana is also offered with the atmospheric 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which was introduced to the GMC Savana lineup for the 2021 model year, replacing the outgoing 6.0L V8 L96 Vortec. The new L8T is rated at 401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm, all of which is directed through the GM six-speed heavy-duty transmission.
The third and final powertrain option is the 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax, which is rated at 181 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 369 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. The diesel option includes direct injection, dual overhead cams, and an exhaust brake, connecting to the GM eight-speed automatic transmission.
Notably, each engine option sends power exclusively to the rear wheels through a 3.42 axle ratio. What’s more, the 2022 GMC Savana is available in both Passenger van and Cargo van body configurations, as well as with either a regular-length wheelbase or extended-length wheelbase. It’s also offered in Cutaway configuration.
With all that covered, we find that the 2022 GMC Savana models with the highest overall max trailer weight are the Cargo vans when equipped with the new 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 10,000 pounds for each configuration (2500, 3500, regular wheelbase, and extended wheelbase).
Meanwhile, the 2022 GMC Savana with the lowest overall max trailer weight is the Passenger 2500 Extended Wheelbase model, rated at 5,300 pounds when equipped with the 2.8L I4 LWN diesel engine.
