GM To Repurchase Silverado HD, Sierra HD Units Due To Duramax Diesel Engine Quality Issue

GM Authority has learned that GM intends to buy back certain Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD units back from customers due to apparent quality issues with the 6.6L L5P V8 Duramax turbo-diesel engine.
The affected vehicles, which have been sold to both retail and fleet customers, will be repurchased by the Detroit-based automaker in an upcoming Dealer Order Submission Process on April 21st. This includes vehicles that have already been delivered to customers. It’s currently unclear what kind of quality issues affected the Duramax turbo-diesel engines in these trucks.
While GM has agreed to replace affected trucks, the replacement vehicles will be subject to certain feature constraints due to the semiconductor chip shortage. There are currently multiple feature constraints on the Silverado HD and Sierra HD, limiting the availably of heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, heated steering wheel and front and rear park assist. Due to these supply constraints, it may not be possible for GM to exactly match the replacement trucks with the ones being repurchased. These feature constraints vary from trim to trim, however, so some units may be less affected than others.
The 6.6L L5P V8 Duramax engine is produced at the DMax Ltd. engine assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio. The facility has produced more than two million Duramax diesel engines since operations began in 2000 and began producing the L5P-generation engine in 2016 for the 2017 model year Silverado HD and Sierra HD. DMax Inc. is a joint venture company between GM and Isuzu Diesel Services of America, Inc., with GM claiming a 60 percent stake and Isuzu owning the remaining 40 percent.
The current 6.6L L5P V8 Duramax engine produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque in the 2022 model year Silverado HD and Sierra HD. This turbocharged diesel V8 enables a maximum towing capacity of as much as 36,000 pounds in properly equipped Silverado 3500HD and Sierra 3500HD models.

Saved a dime during production and will cost them in the long rung.
GM has always done something stupid to get there name in the news….
Get rid of Mary.
good union made
Must be a republican
What about the 2019 GMC trucks that have early engine failure???? 100 thousand miles and engine had to be replaced .
LINDA,
My 2019 Denali duramax just received a recall letter about failing injectors, and are they going to replace , NOPE they offered warantee on injectors to 150K to save cost , Mary Barryass GM junk what a mess of a company.
I wonder if they will use this to address the issue with the Valve controller on the transmission, that causes rear tires to lock up at random while driving!!
Gm will take them back then give them to the illegal immigrants that are flocking to the US.
Great more problems with GM ordered into late September built mid-December not inspected till January and sitting in Michigan ever since not even set up for Transit yet and I sold my truck after it was built and had a VIN number now I sit without a truck.
Rick
Order a Ford , youll have a vin # in a week , and a truck 7 weeks later. and all this GM crap with engines , poor communication , ect go’s away
To the guy who said that “GM has NEVER sold a truck that worked” from my personal experience with a bought new 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 6.6 Duramax 4×4 extended cab with currently 179,251 miles the CEL has not came on at all nor any other MIL light for that matter since I’ve owned this daily driver from purchasing form the dealer.
Now please explain your very untrue statement.
It doesn’t matter what brand a man buys what does it how that man performs maintenance on said vehicle. Period
I’ve never understood why an article about GM on a GM page would lead to Ford or Dodge discussion, or vice-versa.
All brands have made great vehicles and have also made absolute garbage. All brands took loans from the government during the economic collapse, all brands are grossly overpriced, and aside from the Chevy Legends Group, most brands don’t really give a damn about the consumer. I don’t understand the undying pride that some people have for their brand.
Personally, I don’t care if it’s a Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, whatever, so long as it’s a quality product that does exactly what it’s supposed to do and is dependable and reliable.
I will say this, the only vehicle I’ve ever had that was just a complete pile of shit was a 2011 Chevy Impala. It had electrical issues from day one. The Stabilitrak, ABS, and Traction Control functions never worked on the vehicle. It spent virtually every second I owned it in limp mode, and eventually it was return to GM via the lemon law.
Did that change my opinion of Chevy or GM? Not really, it was disappointing but when you put out hundreds of thousands of vehicles on an assembly line, there’s bound to be a POS that slips through.
Ford did not take a hand-out.
The EPA emission mandates and Fed fuel economy mandates have loaded on highway and even off highway equipment diesel engines to strangulation.
Exhaust gas recirculation, particulate filters, high pressure common rail fuel system, UREA injection, twin turbos in some cases, low sulfer diesel fuel, black box chip controls….it’s a wonder the diesel functions.
This has nothing to do with anything defective…. they are just trying to buy back your ICE. Vehicles and then tell everyone to get something electric… why would the buy it back and not just replace it…..come on…. this is a weak attempt….
Hello
I have a 2020 GMC Denali with A 6.6 diesel, is this engine in there call back replacement?
Now I understand why they want to go all EV. Let’s go Brandon!
Just wondering about my 2020 High Country 2500HD?
I ordered a 2022 GMC 3500 AT4 in November 2021. It was delivered to transit point in Milpitas Ca 2/11/22. There it sat. They communicated with dealer it would be delivered 2/28. I sold my 2022 2500 Silverado on 2/28. No delivery. Dealer shocked. Crickets from GMC. Their 800# is a third party vendor with no access to info. It is IMPOSSIBLE to have anyone in GMC management accessible to customers. My brother’s neighbor (a GM engineer) eventually got me in touch with the CA Xone manager for GMC/Buick. She was a loss for words. HM communicates with nobody. I received a call from my dealer. No AT4 will be delivered. They offered up a Denali HD for what I paid for the AT4. (to my benefit by nearly $5K) that’s the dealer stepping up not GMC. Ultimately the Denali with its ass-ugly cheese grater grill will be delivered to me Wednesday 4/20. When I can I’ll order a 2023 AT4 3500. My dealer Dow Lewis Motors in Yuba City CA has been fantastic. Cream of the crop! Its too bad GMC Corporate customer service is so horrible. No follow thru and lies.
Hell I have a 2018 Chevrolet 3500 LTZ Duramax 6.6 and from day one the engine bock heater was recalled. Been replaced once. Shortly after that it was recalled again. Every time I ask the dealership they state there’s no replacement available. I had a long conversation with GM costumer service and they only stated the same thing “NO FIX AT THIS TIME”. My only response was “THATS NO WHAT I PAID FOR”. Still waiting! If they want to buy this thing back they can have it!
I Would Absolutely Never Buy A P.O.S. GMC Or Bowtie Diesel Or Even A P.O.S. Ford Diesel And I’m A Bonified Ford Lover! I Got A Dodge Ram 3500 With A Cummins Diesel! If It Doesn’t Say Cummins Or Caterpillar It Isn’t Worth Having Period! Ever Since Ford Quit Having International Build The Power Stroke They Have Been Junk!
caterpillar has NOT had a road engine since 2006. The Cummins in my Ram 3500 with Aisin pulls well, but when its not pulling its reserved . the OEM air bags are bad ass for picking up load. The 2022 Ford I have runs flawless day in and day out not a single problem in 9 months and 18K miles and I pull trailers all day long. The internationals were junk after the 7.3L . The 7.3 were bullet proof but underpowered.
Where can I find out what year models are they talking about and what actual issues with the engine??
AlexB
GM will never disclose particular issues they have with the 6.6 Duramax in HD trucks.
This opens the doors for product liability lawyers. And is just generally bad publicity.
David
The only issue that I have with mine after pulling my travel trailer for about 45 miles it goes into limp mode with P0087 code and fuel filter to 0% life message and fuel filter has about 80% life left. Been to two different dealers for same issue. Everything that has to do with this code has been replaced and it still does it. I’m not sure what issues they’re talking about on here and year models, mine is 2009 and I’m the second owner.
Everyone needs to actually read the article on this. It clearly says ” will be repurchased by the Detroit-based automaker in an upcoming Dealer Order Submission Process on April 21st.” So no real information until then.
Just called the dealer. They said this is B.S. Unless it comes from GM or your dealer, don’t give it any more thought. But… Again, we’re talking to a dealer. So… Who the “F” knows.
Does anybody know how to stop the GM Authority comments coming through my email? I get about 20 comments a day and would like for it to stop.

I like these Ford guys criticizing gm for plastic interiors, do they close their eyes when they get into their trucks? Same idiots that fall for the stupid names that Ford gives their junk. Gunna get me a tremor with a godzilla engine with 430 gears so I can visit every gas station. Face it every manufacturer will have issues but to stand up and correct the problem says a lot unlike ford’s 6.0 anchor.
Kevin,
Sorry you can’t afford fuel for real motors, thats why you , Brandon, AOC , and Elizabeth Warren love the new 2.7L rice burner and there 330 rear they are putting in the silverado for you. You want to talk about the 6.0 Diesel, it was 15 years ago, let it go man, yet you have GM buying back trucks they built last month. One last note , even GM stated there interiors are lacking and suck . 90% Blown plastic full of compartments that don’t hold anything. I’m sure your excited and love the new sissy girl car dash in the trucks.
Mickey
I don’t have a problem affording gas but would rather spend it on my big block camaro than some godzilla that can’t pull anything of size up mountain grades without 430 rear gears and they are 340 in the Silverado which works with a diesel no matter who makes it because they do not require high rpms . At least GM is stepping up to correct the problem which Ford never did no matter if it was 15 years ago or yesterday. Interior wise I bought a truck to tow horses or a drag car and if I wanted fancy interior I would have bought a high end car. Last, according to your comments, if I wanted a a sissy girl dash I guess I should have bought one of those awesome fancy fords with the theater size screen on the dash.
yes sir , your a Broke D@#k Dreamer . I am very proud you know so much about the Ford’s . Ford out sells them all. GM has 8 brands , and Toyota kicked there a$$ this month.
GM is not stepping up, there in DAMAGE control. They don’t admit nothing. Remember the 41 people that died over a faulty Ignition switch in their cars 4 years ago.
GM has your sissy dash, looks like it belongs in a Lincoln town car or Cadillac. GM use to be great , Mary Barrya$$ has ran it in the ground and you know it. I have a 2019 Denali 2500 , the piece of sh!t has 4 recalls and I just received a letter stating the injectors are a problem but there not recalling it, so the government forced a 150K warranty on the injectors, but that go’s away when sold. Damage control.
