GM To Add Third Chevy Silverado Production Shift At Oshawa Assembly Plant

GM Canada has announced it will add a third shift of production to its Oshawa Assembly plant in southern Ontario as it prepares to begin building the Chevy Silverado 1500 there.

Production of the Chevy Silverado HD commenced at Oshawa Assembly in November of last year, however the facility has yet to begin producing the light-duty Chevy Silverado 1500. GM provided more plans on its production timeline for the light-duty pickup at Oshawa during a press conference held at the plant on Monday, with the automaker planning to add a third shift there for Silverado 1500 production “in the coming months.” This will bring the size of the number of new jobs created at the plant since it reopened last year to more than 2,600, the automaker says.

Once the third shift is active at Oshawa Assembly, the facility will be GM’s only truck plant capable of producing the heavy-duty Silverado HD and light-duty Silverado 1500 on the same production line. There is one drawback, however, as Oshawa Assembly will not produce the GMC Sierra nameplate alongside the Chevy Silverado for the time being to prevent further complicating the production processes there. GM will never the less be thankful for the added production capacity as demand for its full-size pickups soars in both the United States and Canada.

GM produces the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 at its Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana and Silao Assembly plant in Mexico. The Silverado HD and Sierra HD, meanwhile, are both built at Flint Assembly in Michigan.

GM also announced this week that it had signed onto the Canadian federal government’s “Canada Diversity Challenge,” which tasks participating corporations with promoting equality in their workforces and board rooms. Roughly 50 percent of the 2,600 people employed at Oshawa Assembly are women.

“Working with our government partners we have reopened GM’s Oshawa plant, creating thousands of new jobs and recruiting a record number of women in production roles,” said Marissa West, GM Canada’s newly appointed president and managing director.

GM has not yet provided an exact date for the start of Chevy Silverado 1500 production at Oshawa Assembly.

  1. I’m going to be that guy, when Audi started cherishing the progressive movement, their cars went from awesome performance machines of all levels, to now cars that look like last gen Hyundais and Kia’s. 4 cylinder Large SUVs, and worst of all FAKE exhaust tips.

I’m not generalizing anything, I’m just saying, focus on what gets the job done correctly, not who is doing the job.

    2. Didn’t they just last week announce production cuts in FT Wayne Indiana? Bowing down to Trudeau after he seized trucks from their owners and auctioned them off for his progressive wish list. Also in the news last week, Toyota in the number one seller in America. Their cars look like turds, and drive like it’s still 1980, but at least they don’t stab us in the back.

  2. Glad to see Oshawa rising again.

There’s a few rednecks from South of the border that should spend a few minutes and do a Google search before posting that Oshawa is stealing US jobs.

Oshawa has been part of general motors from the very beginning the early 1900s.

The head of GM Canada was one of the founding fathers of general motors, and was the first vice president of general motors.

Oshawa is only reclaiming was there’s to begin with.

The Canadian auto industry has lost a ton of jobs to Mexico as well point the finger where it belongs.

    Corporate greed hurts us all.

    1. So true David ,the 2500 that l ordered 6 months ago ,is sitting and waiting for shipment. No heated seat or steering wheel,no sprayed in box liner, the shipping date unknown. An incomplete truck that is going to be a year old before we see it.

      1. John, sorry to hear you are having the same issues. I hope GM will get this worked out and be upfront and notify customers that have ordered a truck with an actual update. My local dealership used a “Hot” ticket and calls GM every other week , they are getting the same response. Its the unknown and LACK of communication from GM that is the issue for me. Hang in there…

  3. I am wondering when they will ship all the 2500 HD trucks before starting the 1500 series production.
My 2500 HD was built over 4 months ago . “Sitting and released to carrier, Not in transit”. Makes more since they would get the shipping and delivery worked out before starting another shift . . Just saying….

  4. In coming months, or not. No chips no third shift. It’s Canada anyway who cares?

  5. In the coming months, does that mean a 2023. Seems pointless to start with the 2022 refresh.

  6. What about bringing those jobs back to America? I wouldn’t buy an $80k+ truck anyway.

  7. This is BS!
They can’t even keep up with orders for the HD that they already have. I placed an order on January 18th in Phoenix Arizona and GM has yet to pick up the order and give me a production and/or delivery date.
I can’t even get anyone from GM to return my calls.
I’ve been purchasing new Chevrolet trucks for the past 40 years and I’m moving to Ford.

  8. Hiring 50% female employees isn’t anything new to me. It seemed like there were already about half all along. Having said that, it seems as if North Americans are addicted to large pickup trucks for no reason. Half of the people driving them, never use them for construction work, nor for hauling large items. If GM doesn’t convert that Oshawa plant to building electric vehicles instead of unnecessary monster trucks, it will close again in another 2 years, as gasoline prices continue to rise.

  9. I hope they have better luck then Gm does with the Colorado. I ordered one eight months ago only to be told last week that Gm will no longer build me the truck I ordered. Absolute shame. I’ve been a Gm guy for 33 yrs. No more

  10. I’ve ordered mine 1500 couple months ago and hearing stuff like this killed all my hopes, extended lease just waist of money left and right. Gm is a biggest shame of all truck makers. But EV is coming commercial all over tv. You can get it in 2024 if you lucky. They don’t even have enough chips for regular truck let alone ev that needs much more electronic parts. Stop lying people be fair tell us truth
