GM Hit With Class Action Lawsuit For PCV Issues In 2.4L Engines

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against GM over problems with the 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine offered in certain 2010 to 2017 model year Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles.

This lawsuit, which was first covered by Car Complaints, claims the 2.4L engine in affected vehicles does not have a traditional positive crankcase ventilation valve, but rather a fixed orifice vacuum port in the intake manifold. This small fixed orifice, located between the #2 and #3 intake runners, can get clogged with water, sludge and grime or, in cold weather conditions, ice. If the PCV is clogged, the crankcase pressure can cause the engine’s rear main seal to fail, which can lead to an oil leak and, if left unaddressed, total engine failure.

According to Car Complaints, this class-action suit is open to all American consumers who purchased or leased one of the following Chevy, Buick or GMC vehicles from April 1st, 2016 onward:

The publication also points to a GM diagnostics bulletin that was sent to dealers in February of 2019, which was titled “Diagnostic Tip for Oil Leak from Rear of Engine After Extended Driving in Cold Temperatures Below 0 Degrees.” This bulletin indicates that some customers “may comment that an engine oil leak appeared as they were driving the vehicle in extremely cold ambient temperatures,” and that some customers may have “heard a single ‘pop’ noise right before the oil leak started.”

To address the problem, GM suggested technicians clean any debris out of the PCV hose/fixed orifice and inspect/replace the PCV hoses if necessary. This bulletin is applicable for vehicles in cold weather climates only, suggesting the problem could be tied to low ambient temperatures. We also found a separate bulletin from March 2015 titled ‘Plugged PCV Orifice in Intake Manifold‘ that instructed technicians on how to unclog the PCV system in certain 2.4L Ecotec powered vehicles. Images from this 2015 bulletin are embedded above.

Plaintiffs are seeking damages as they say GM has not officially recalled affected vehicles for this problem and will instead temporarily fix the solution by using a drill bit to clean out the PCV port. They also say GM has not offered an extended warranty beyond its fixed five-year/60,000-mile coverage.

The suit so far involves four plaintiffs, four of which own Chevy Equinox models and three of which own GMC Terrain models. These plaintiffs are seeking the “recovery of the purchase price of their vehicles, compensation for overpayment and diminution in value of their vehicles, out-of-pocket and incidental expenses, disgorgement of GM’s unjustly derived profits, and an injunction compelling GM to replace or recall and fix the Class Vehicles,” according to the suit, as quoted by Car Complaints.

Started having problems and at the 5 year mark, the dealership said nothing was wrong even though it was running rough and stalling. Not even 6 months later, my engine seized. Paid over 7K with a rebuilt engine & labor to have it happen AGAIN literally a year later!! I’m faithful with oil changes. This is absolutely 💯 GM’s oversight and fault! Shame on them for acting like they care about their customers. The fact this has been proven in court already & they STILL have failed to issue a recall is proof that’s a

          1. This happened to me in January,2024, but all the oil was lost and engine failed. It happened on my drive home from work. No lights, warnings, etc. The car started making a noise that I didn’t recognize, then died several times. I thought I needed to get it in the shop, but didn’t know that it was due to the engine. I arrived home and got a low-pressure light, it died, and never started again. There was oil all over the under-carriage. I had to replace the engine for $8500 and had rental car fees in the thousands, due to not having a second car. I have tried working with GM. They offered me 86,000 GM reward points which is equivalent to about $800. I had bought an extended warranty, but since the cause of failure was the PCV, the warranty company will not cover any of the engine replacement.

I got to just see this there has been a fix for this for a while and you don’t have to go to the dealership to get it done and it’s not that expensive either as far as I know if you know what mechanic on the side it has to do with the orifice valve in front of PCV inside the engine you change that out and you should have no more trouble that’s what I’ve heard and read about so all these people I want compensation from GM waiting on a lawsuit like they’re going to get a brand new car no you’re not You’re better off just trying to fix it and see what happens as far as I know that fix works It’s GM ever going to own up to it I don’t think so but you never know.

        1. This is not happening on older vehicles. It happened to me twice on my 2017 equinox within the first 3 years. It also happened on my daughter’s 2014 Equinox twice. In every case, the crankcase gets pressurized and the main oil seal gets blown out with all of the oil running out of the car. Secondly, in most cases, it is not because the 1/16 hole gets plugged up. It happens when the temperature gets below 20 degrees F and the water condensation plugs up the vent tube on the side of the intake manifold cover when it freezes. The 1/16 hole can be open, but the main oil seal will still blow out. The real fix is to drill a 1/4 hole into the intake manifold cover and allow the water condensation to drain back into the manifold (right now, there is a plastic cup in the manifold that fills with water where the vent tube plugs in),

          1. 2014 is ten years old and 2017 eight years old that why I stayed away from the 4 cylinder Second generation Equinox I read about it and found a V6 that was a decent car I just didn’t like the Ford/GM collaboration transmission. But GM is not going to fix this that’s why in 2018 with the new generation Equinox they drop the 2.4 l 4 cylinder like a hot potato.

            Reply
            1. The problem that I was addressing was the fact that GM could have fixed this problem for less than $10 and they could have done it back in 2011. It would have made the 2.4L engine dependable for all of the vehicles produced from 2011 to 2017. I am an engineer and from reading this lawsuit and most of these posts, I can tell that they still have not figured out what happened or how to fix it. It is not like this happens with time, it can happen when the vehicles were new. I can demonstrate on one of these engines that the 1/16 hole being plugged has nothing to do with it.

Ok I’m not here to argue what ever you don’t get or won’t acknowledge my point that the cars NOW are old not ten or fifteen years ago when new they should have been fixed under a recall but unfortunately a lot of car companies try to take the easy cheap way out. My friend was working on a Nissan at his garage with a tech from the dealership the tech told him that if they can they use used parts from a donor car to fix cars under warranty. It’s just the world we live in if it where perfect Jesus would not have to come back

I’ve had two Matt’s in every single one of my vehicles I’ve had my gas pedal stick or get stuck! GM should have fixed these but they got away with it like I said if the world where perfect we wouldn’t need to argue about this but that’s how all corporations are the slime balls try to weasel their way out of spending extra money even when it comes to safety!

      2. The 2.4 ecotec engine doesn’t have a PCV valve…. you’re either in a different vehicle with a different engine or you were massively ripped off.

The 2.4 ecotec has a PCV orifice (as pictured above) that gets carbon and sludge build up on it, thus clogs completely. The only way to “change” as in replace the PCV orifice is to replace the entire intake manifold.

I found a couple of things I’m not happy with and frankly I’m scared. I constantly have my nephew check the oil as I’m 70 and have difficulty walking. I’m not rich like GM is. Now I found out about the pcv valve has a problem, why was these vehicles not recalled? If the PCV valve clogs up, there’s a chance of the rear main seal blowing, allowing all the oil to leak out .That is a major repair, the engine has to be taken apart. I wouldn’t be able to afford to fix it. I’m live in Toronto Ontario Canada. Does anyone know if there is a lawsuit here against Gm. I always wanted an SUV and this one is mint. It runs excellent, you can’t even hear it. I made a big mistake buying it unseen except for pictures on kijiji. The person had just put a timing chain on plus other things. I’m not a mechanic. I wish I knew these things before I bought it. Now I’m scared to drive it.

      1. I would also be interested to know if there is a lawsuit in Canada. My daughter has a 2016 Terrain that left her stranded on the side of the road in minus 30 Celsius after the rear seal blew out resulting in a major oil loss. GM should be held accountable for their poor design. These issues could result in serious issues or death in some situations

      2. Pat go to any automotive store or gm and ask for a vented oil filler cap! It will not allow the pressure to buildup in the crankcase and you will never pop the rear main seal! Its the cheapest way to eliminate engine damage from a plugged PVC orifice in the intake !

  13. Toyota and Honda Both had PCV problems , Toyota for 20 years on there 2.2 they stuffed in everything, they would clog slowly and suck the crankcase dry between 3k oil changes , and not just in sub zero temps , Not a peep from anyone ??? And don’t even get me started on the Euro’s!! And why does it clog??? Sludge and moisture build up from most likely, improper maintenance… And after 60 to 100k, better check your owners manual, it is an inspection item every oil change and if you do not know how to check for a properly operating PCV system go have a seat at the back of the class, action Lawsuit.

    Reply
    1. But these 2.4 engines don’t have one you inspect. There was a video posted on how to plug the hose and listen for a whistle but the Pcv system on the 2.4 is integrated in the intake. You’d have to pull the intake completely off to inspect. They aren’t the same as the old school PCV valves you just pop in and off. If so, I bet we’d see fewer failures. Mine never failed. I just got in here for a different issue but I can see it’s a common thing. I pulled my intake off twice for gasket failures and both times, I cleaned the Pcv orifice out.

I was unaware of it, maintained the car getting regular oil changes…I would always get my oil changed at 3500 miles. I went back a year later and bought my daughter a 2016. When I purchased the 2015 with 35000m in 2019 no one said a word about what the problems could be. I am not rich so at the time I thought why is the car being resold already and why is it affordable to me? But the car drove very nice, the engine sounded fine and it was in great condition….the 2016 is in the mechanic shop right now having the timing chain replaced….2100 that I do not have…. very thankful that this engine did not get destroyed because an engine replacement is currently up to 8000. I am still paying on this car. Again, this car should have never been resold with this type of issue. Shame on Chevy/GM and shame on the dealerships.

Christmas Eve temperature dropped to 5 degrees Fahrenheit and he rear main seal blew out. Fortunately she pulled over. The car had about .5 quarts of oil left! Timing chain, naturally is rattling after pulling it into garage and adding oil. Mechanic said we will need a new timing chain and rear main seal. Most likely 2-3k dollars. Most likely cause was frozen pcv. I will fix it correctly and trade on a Honda. Only reason I will fix it correctly is someone else’s daughter may end up with it. Shame on GM and shame on you people sticking up for GM! You are making Snarky “know it all” comments about poor maintenance and don’t even know the situation. I will never buy GM again.

Lost most of the oil after the rear main seal blew out and this also caused issues with the timing chain (which caused issues with the timing. I’m also looking at 2-3k to fix. 1. Those were notorious for bad piston rings, all the way through the 2013 model years. In my post on this page, I outline how to do a simple PVC test and there is one on this car on YouTube. You need to do that test first and if it passes, you likely have the dreaded pistil on ring issue which requires an entire engine rebuild. Hopefully, it fails the PCV test and if so, you need to pull the intake manifold off and clear the PCV blockage. That’s your best case. Do that test immediately because a blockage will cause too much pressure and will blow the rear main seal. However, it can also cause oil to push past the piston rings. That’s why you need to test it, to see which issue you have. Pray it’s just a blockage.

  36. I have a 2014 Equinox with the 2.4. Bought it in 2017 with 65,000 miles and will hit 190,000 by the end of this week. I have replaced some regular maintenance items as expected and have also replaced the coolant expansion tank, that I noticed had a bad seal, cracked exhaust manifold and attached upstream o2 sensor, secondary air injection pump and connector (had a broken wire), and a few other items. These other items were because I’ve been chasing the common issue with the stall shortly after starting on cold days. All live data shows sensors reporting in range, so it’s been odd. I replaced the throttle body and the intake manifold gaskets. Still, no resolution. The PCV issue you mention, I have never had. There is a simple test you can do by removing the small PCV line to the air box and plugging it with a screw wrapped in tape. If the engine starts to whistle shortly after, then your PCV orifice is clear. If not, it’s plugged up and you’ll need to pull the intake and clean it out immediately. There is also a GM vented oil fill cap that will vent pressure beyond 12 psi. I have taken very good care of this car and I’m approaching 200,000 miles, before next spring. That being said, I still would not recommend the 2.4 because the average person likely won’t pay as much attention as I do to my cars and if you don’t keep an eye on the 2.4, you can be left stranded and needing a new engine.

GM Hit with Class Action Lawsuit For PCV Issues In 2.4L Engines

I want in on this lawsuit.

12/16/2022 I had the vehicle serviced @ Walser Polar Chevrolet White Bear Lake, MN just like I have since I purchased it new. Oil & Transmission fluid changed, new tires, wheel alignment, rear brake pads and rotors, $2,045.00. No mention of a class action lawsuit for Frozen PCV valve, causing the rear main seal to blowout. GM has known about this problem for years and has done nothing to rectify it.

I brought my vehicle into Walser Polar Chevrolet for service as always trusting I would leave having a safe ride in the deadly winter weather conditions, that was not the case. I should have been notified there was an issue with this Make and Model regarding the freezing of the PCV valve and rear engine seal blowing out. Someone is going to DIE because of this, they will break down in subzero temperatures and freeze to death.

12/24/2022 at 6:45 am on Christmas eve. I had no warning whatsoever there was a problem until the Equinox started to sputter, the engine light came on and a few minutes later the engine shut down. The PCV valve froze causing the rear main seal to blowout, the engine was completely destroyed. $9,700 estimated repair bill. Thank God, I made it to White Bear Ave and a police officer showed up, it was 11 degrees below zero out. AAA had a 299-minute estimated wait.

I sold it to Walser Polar Chevrolet White Bear Lake, MN 12/30/2022 for $4,000.00 that’s all they were willing to offer. After pending $2,045 on 12/16/2022 I ended up with $1,965.00. This car was in great running condition when I brought it in for service, no leaks or indication of a problem other than the maintenance suggested. KBB Trade in for this vehicle is $9,000.00 to $10,000.00, fair market value $12,5000 to$15,000.00, their selling used up to $19,000.

  48. These engines don’t like to be poorly maintained. Regular oil changes at 3500 miles and full synthetic oil will get you a long way. They do consume oil, so checking every 400 miles is mandatory. Top off as needed.
But that is a ring problem and not related to the pcv. Here in Wisconsin we instal vented oil fill caps in weather below freezing.
    G.M. part number FC219.
20 bucks for the cap is cheaper than a rear main seal. I’m sure G.M.doesnt recommend this solution because of loss of emissions control. Gases will escape reburn in the catalytic converter. And will cause the vehicle to be out of compliance.
If you ask at a parts counter at your local G.M.dealership, they will hand it over. They know the it works, but they can’t recommend it to you. I have heard that G.M can claim warranty violation for doing this, but they were not going to cover the main seal anyway. Save yourself a bunch of worry and expense. Just buy the fill cap and change your oil. EVERY 3500 MILES.

  53. My 2017 Chevrolet Equinox Premier (37K miles) rear main seal blew out on Christmas Eve 2022 during below zero weather. The engine warning light never came on but the vehicle stalled. I thought I had a bad tank of gas or a bad alternator. The Chevy dealer first told me they found metal shards in the oil and required a new engine, but later denied it and performed timing chain and cam shaft repairs. Due to the low mileage, GM agreed to supposedly pay half the repairs. My share was $2200. The class action suit is being investigated by the Miller Law Firm. The suit has not yet been certified by a judge. Contact the Miller Firm in Rochester 1-248-600-5455 to participate in the suit. The more complaints the better chance the suit will be certified.

Blows rear seal, and loses all engine oil within 5 miles of driving. Another $5000 to fix the rear seal, when you add in towing. I’ve also had to replace the entire wiper motor assembly, which is also a known defect. GM needs to step up and cover something.

My roommate and I are both older people who went down to the dealership in our town last year to get a car we could count on. I am disabled with several heart problems and she is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s so I needed something that we could count on to get us to the doctors, pharmacies, etc. They sold us a 2015 Chevy equinox. For a while no problems. No lights come on no crazy sounds nothing. When it got time to change the oil for the first time I took it in for service to have the man tell me there is no oil in your car. I said what? There has been no oil on my driveway so how could I have no oil He changed everything, put oil in the car and we even let it sit there and idle for 30 minutes no oil on the ground at all so he tells me just watch the oil and go get it checked out by a mechanic because it is somehow using oil. I said ok. Well 3 weeks later on Christmas Eve I was driving down the road and bam the stability track light came in, Power reduced came on and the car automatically slammed to where it was barely driving and I heard a rattling noise. I get out and look there is no oil in the car, it is 15 degrees outside and I’m in the middle of nowhere except thank God for one small gas station 5 miles back down the road. I had no choice but to drive it back to the gas station and I put 4 quarts of oil in started it back up and it was running and sound fine. I drove on home thank God I made it. I had it taken to the shop and the rear main seal needs fixed and hopefully they don’t get in there to find even more damage but it’s gonna cost 1500.00 to fix. Now it’s real easy for people to pass judgement and make comments where gm should not be responsible forever. Well I am poor so I had to get a used car when I bought one. I pay 390.00 a month and still owe 11 thousand dollars paying the car off. I have been without a car for 2 months now. I am disabled but am out trying to find odd and end jobs to come up with 1500 a month and all we draw is 2800 a month for two people. I have had to miss cardiologist appointments and tests because of this mess to find out I am in this predicament due to no fault of mine but because of a greedy place like gm. Due to this we had no Christmas or new years dinner or presents. I was born poor and everything I have I have worked for so don’t tell me that gm should not have to fix their cars forever. For anyone else that is going through this you are in my prayers.

      1. General Motors can’t by law advise you of this fix. The problem with the oil fill cap(FC219) is with the emissions laws. The cap will release unburned gases into the atmosphere. The catalytic convertor is supposed to burn them off completely. You can buy the cap and install it yourself. And then the emissions violation is on you and not them. Be sure to put original cap back on the motor if dealer service is required. Warranty issues may result. Best of luck and change your oil at 3500 mile intervals.

It’s a design flaw. Design flaw are not covers by the warranty.

  85. The vented cap is cheap and WORKS! Before I figured out how to clean out the PCV orifice we had an incident 2 weeks after I changed out that cap. Blew oil all over, lol. For the pcv orifice. If you take your valve cover off – replace the gasket since it’s off, then take intake/throttle body cleaner and spray it in the center rectangle towards your intake manifold (that’s the exact spot for the pcv orifice. It won’t go in your oil, I promise. Take your air compressor with the gun looking blower chuck, stick it in there the same way, cover it with a rag and blow out the cleaner. I had to repeat it 4 times. That will clean out the gunk. I had a lot built up. Then for maintenance when you use the CRC GDI valve cleaner – you have to clean those valve tops as direct injection means no gas washes over the top, that will also take care of the pcv orifice. You must do that treatment to avoid chunks of crap coming off and wrecking the catalytic converter. If you live up north, you can also look on youtube for where to drill a hole in the intake manifold to reach the pcv orifice too. Another tip – once you have 100k or more on the clock, change out your sensors. Don’t wait for them to throw a code. I had a great performance boost replacing the MAP sensor. They lose efficacy over time, they aren’t expensive. Check rockauto, the wholesale gm sites, etc. for best price. Most of them are super easy and quick to change out. Don’t forget your 02 sensors. Those going bad can wreck your catalytic converter. You must replace both at the same time. Get the specific socket. There’s a youtube video that shows the job is easier by putting a plumbing screw clamp on the base of the socket to give you better leverage if you have one stuck on there to hard.

Instead of just issuing a bulletin, they could have sent a letter to the owners warning about the potential problem and what to do to correct it before leading to a blown rear main seal!!

  95. My vehicle was also a 2017 Equinox however my damages came to 3700 total to get me back on the road. Moving forward I am going to be gathering as much evidence as I can and using the legal framework from the class action lawsuit in the US for this defect. I am going to begin attempting to go after GMC for this hefty repair bill. I am going to be trying to collect contact details from everyone in Canada who has fallen victim to this.

  96. Be sure to get the pressure release oil cap. It works! Blew oil all over under the hood before I cleaned out the pcv orifice. ACDelco GM Original Equipment FC219 Engine Oil Filler Cap. All cars now days have issues. The key is to search what those issues are so you know how to maintain the vehicle and avert disaster. Never buy the first year of a new model so these issues have time to surface and are reported. See my comment above for how to clean out your pcv orifice good and proper and how to maintain it. Much easier and more thorough than what the service bulletin says to do. If your vehicle has around 100k miles, also replace the MAP sensor the engine will love it. Mine wasn’t getting proper air. No codes or issues other than I felt like the engine wasn’t getting the right amount of air. Performance jumped once replaced. Super easy to do and cheap on rock auto website. Do the MAF sensor too before it goes out, that’s the easiest of all the sensors and the most expensive to have a shop do it. Around $400 they want for the labor and it literally takes 2 minutes. Literally.

  98. Class action lawsuits will give you nothing – even if the plaintiffs win. The lawyers take all the winnings in class actions. Sue GM on your own in Small Claims Court. Small Claims Court is like going before Judge Judy, nothing scary, don’t get a lawyer, etc. You just tell what happened and you can also request a jury. Since Covid, most courts have proceedings over zoom or the like. Many small claims courts go up to $20,000 now and you have over a 85% chance of winning in small claims court if you do NOT get a lawyer, especially in Texas. You can request a jury in small claims – so you don’t think you’ll win that? GM also has plants in Texas, so your good there. If GM appeals to a higher court when you win? No problem if you’re in Texas (but you can still cite this case in other states too). A legal precedent was already set that makes the appeals court procedures (that will be in “county court” or “district court” the same as small claims. See Courtney vs. Yellow Cab. Dallas County back in the 1980s or 1990s. Courtney argued to the appeals judge (district court) that it wasn’t his fault Yellow Cab wouldn’t pay up from the small claims judgement and appealed. He couldn’t afford a lawyer for the appeals court. Besides he argued, for the common man to have his day in court (the whole reason small claims court exists), he shouldn’t be shut out of having his case in court, because he didn’t know the rules of procedure and couldn’t hire a lawyer for the appeal in district court. The judge agreed, thus Courtney presented his case just as he did in small claims and won again. Yellow Cab didn’t take it any further and paid up.

Also you can report GM to your state Attorney General and MI’s AG. You can file a complaint with the Fair Trade Commission that they knew about the issue and still sold you your vehicle without warning you about it.

If someone was God forbid injured or died as a result of this known problem, then you must, must go to the whatever that vehicle safety federal government agency is. Can’t remember that name right now.

The problem that was in the original thread is about a condition where freezing cold weather causes the crankcase not to be able to vent and the crankcase pressure blows out the main rear crankshaft oil seal. Once this happens, you cannot put more oil in the car because the oil runs out on the ground. This has happened to me twice on a 2017 Equinox and twice on a 2014 equinox that I onw. There is a vent tube on the side of the 2.4L Ecotec engine that is pitched towards the manifold that collects moisture. When this water freezes, the tube plugs and the crankcase does not vent. The orifice in the pictures above is also a problem, but the fact that the main oil seal can blow out with a small amount of pressure is a big problem. This is a design issue that they have known about since 2010 and was addressed back then, but never fixed. I am an engineer, and could fix this easily.

    1. The fix currently is to use oil fill cap (FC219) that will allow for the excess pressure in the engine to escape via a one way valve. G.M. knows this and has the cap, but telling you to do this fix or doing it themselves, is a violation of emission laws. Best thing a person with a 2.4 motor can do is get this cap and change your oil at 3500 mile intervals. Also change the spark plugs and have the valves cleaned. Carbon build up on the valve stems causes a zero compression condition of the affected cylinder. Best advice, stay away from anything direct injected.

      1. Please explain “direct injected”
        Thanks

        Reply
        1. Direct injected referred to the fuel injection system. In this case it means the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders rather than into the intake manifold.

          1. I beleive avery engine today are direct injected. How can we stay away from them ?

            Reply
            1. You can check it out, but some manufacturers have switched to hybrid system of port injection and direct injection. This eliminates the need to have the valve stems cleaned.

    1. Tony, I live in Michigan and this has happened 4 times to me. Twice on my 2014 Equinox and twice on my 2017 Equinox. In every case, it happened the first time the temperature dropped below about 20 degrees F. GM covered the 2011’s and 2012’s, but never fixed the problem. From the pictures in this post, I do not believe that they even know the problem. In all of my cases, it was the condensation and water that froze inside the vent tube on the right side of the engine that caused the back pressure in the crankcase and not the 1/16th diameter vent hole that they say clogs up. I have spent around $7,000 out of pocket so far on repairs and still have not fixed my 2014 Equinox that blew out the rear main seal in January when the temperature dropped to about 20 degrees F. I replaced the engine in this car 2 years ago.

    1. You may get a rear main seal put in for 3000, but not a motor. I got a motor replaced for 5400, but I had to do some shopping around to find the proper place to have the work done. My local dealships wanted between 9 and 11 thousand for motor replacement.

  107. I’d love to know how to join this lawsuit! 1/19/2024 blew rear main seal…$2200 to fix. Told the next repair would be the cam phaser and another $2500. Drove car (2013 Terrian with the ecotech 2.4) maybe 300 miles and now it on a trailer with possible blow motor. Car only has 138,000 miles…should last a lot long than that!

  109. ON 3/18/24 payed $5200 for a 2014 equinox LT with the 2.4L 147,000 miles . Bought it From a mechanic and he had just replaced the rear seal. 4 days later it started leaking also threw 02 sensor codes plus abs light came on . so i parked it. Im looking into it and heres my parts list front seal and rear seal, intake manifold, timing chain kit, pcv hose, vented oil cap, oil and filter and coolant . Bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor and front right speed sensor. Plus my mechanics labor cost. Will Gm cover any of this and more importantly will all these parts fix the problems with the poorly designed 2.4 ecotec ? Does Gm back up any of this? Is there a different intake that eliminates the clogged up hole? What has Gm figured out to resolve the problem?

    1. Sorry to say the answer is no. G.M. will not cover any of it. There have been class action lawsuits filed, but most fail.
I have a 2015 Equinox with a 2.4 motor. It lasted til 112,000 miles. It was using a quart of oil every 1000 miles and as a result a valve stem in the head stuck open. Two Dealerships looked at the car. Neither would repair the motor. Estimates for the motor replacement were 11 thousand at one place and 9900 at the other. I found a local shop that swaps motors. A rebuilt engine with a 100,000 mile warranty çost me 3800 dollars at Napa and the guy put it in for 1800. Don’t know if I would be putting a timing chain in that motor of yours, unless you could see what the piston walls looked like first. It can be done with a bore scope, and could save you from putting money into à motor with scored piston walls.

    2. Ashley, did this happen in cold weather? They used to use vented oil caps, so that the cap could release pressure in case of over pressure in the crankcase. Now, instead of a few fumes, the main real oil seal is blown out and all of the oil runs out of the car. This should have had a recall years ago to put the vented caps back on. Your main problem is the oil seal.

  113. Monee if I where you I’d just get rid of it and cut your money you lost, I did this with my 2010 Chevy Equinox V6 because the transmission started skipping out of drive at 125,00 miles I traded it in because to me between the transmission and $1100 dollars for a new catalytic converter it just wasn’t worth fixing to go what another 20,000 or 30,000 thousand miles if that, the best part was it was payed off so I wasn’t upside down in my previous loan. I hate to say this but when GM came out with the second generation Equinox it was still old GM even though they had went gone to the bankruptcy that has changed now because I’ve owned a 2020 and a 2018 I currently own the 2018 it’s a long story nothing wrong with the car just a bad accident and they are by far much much better vehicles than the second generation just my opinion but I’m going by experience.
