GM Trucks Outsell Ford F-Series During First Quarter 2022

GM full-size truck sales decreased six percent to 177,724 units in the United States during the first quarter of 2022. The performance enables the two GM truck nameplates – Silverado and Sierra – to outsell the F-Series on a combined basis.

TOTAL -6.22% 177,724 189,508

Both of GM’s full-size trucks experienced declining sales volume during the quarter. The Chevy Silverado posted a four percent decrease in sales to 121,107 units while the GMC Sierra posted a 10 percent decrease in sales to 56,617 units. In fact, that means that The General sold over twice as many Silverados as Sierras.

Chevy Silverado

The Chevy Silverado saw a 4.3 percent decrease in overall sales volume to 121,107 units. Sales of the Silverado Light Duty (1500) fell 11 percent, the Silverado Heavy Duty (2500HD and 3500HD) increased 11 percent, and Silverado Medium Duty (4500HD, 5500HD, 6500HD) increased 22.5 percent.

Combining Chevy Silverado sales with GMC Sierra sales places GM in first place as the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America, with a combined 177,724 units for a 38 percent segment share. The Ford F-Series held a 30 percent share with 140,701 units, while the Ram held a 27 percent share with 127,116 units.

Sales of all but one truck lines fell during the quarter, likely as a result in production disruptions stemming from material supply and constraints. The sole exception was the Toyota Tundra, which is all-new for the 2022 model year.

Looking Ahead

We expect interest in and sales of both the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra to trend upward as the highly anticipated refreshed models have finally started to make their way to dealer lots:

  1. All the die hard GM fans on here are probably rejoicing today hearing this news. That means more unfinished black plastic all over the exteriors, black wheels, low mount mirrors , car like dash , and a wide mouth grill that looks like it has eaten the front of the truck.

    1. GM truck drivers don’t care what their trucks look like or what cheap plastic they are made from. They don’t even care if GM installs Self-destructing Engines, Disintegrating Wheels and Defective Windshield Wipers, or Peeling Paint…

GM wont put their Killing Ignitions in their trucks because truckers might go after GM executives. GM reserves the Killer Ignitions for cars.

    2. In other news, RAM outsold Chevy again! Silvy and GMC need emergency grill refresh ASAP! Also, put the damn mirrors back where they belong.

      1. I really can’t stand the refreshed GMC front-end. All I see is a failed attempt at copying Ford’s front end.

  2. lol good to see the spin cycle still going….combine them both to tout best-selling corporation, and hide the continued 3rd place of the Silverado.

Why is the Titan still in production? That’s just sad.

Mary Barryass will hire anyone to slam it together and get out the door. no communication to dealers, and customers, let down after let down, with excuses and push backs, the entire worlds defalt excuse = COVID

        1. That’s an ignorant statement. Stockholders care about the company making money and right now selling trucks and full size SUV’s is how you do it.

      3. Full size pickups for the big three are critical cash cows. In fact their most important cash cows. GM wisely developed and promoted two nameplates. Stellantis’s RAM is in the hunt. Ford had supply chain issues. It’s a hugely competitive game in this segment.

GMC trucks and Chevy trucks are mirrors of each other. Just jewelry, cosmetic and body stampings differences. They even are assembled on the same assembly lines. 90% of parts on both are vendor sourced from same vendors.

So in actuality for the past quarter GM did outsell Ford in full size light truck units. Let the facts speak for themselves.

    2. It’s not “spin” because it is the SAME truck, just with a different body style. They are identical in frame and build underneath the skin. One wonders if you consider it “spin” when Toyota or Honda do it with some of their models (Prius, Civic)?

      1. Yea but GM has way more new truck dealers, more advertising space with separate commercials and you are counting a much larger series of trucks when combining the two.

  3. GM has led full-size retail truck sales for the last 19 years. GMs Q1 2022 share of the retail market was 42%. Ford is heavily reliant on fleet sales with some months one out of every two trucks being sold en’ masse into the fleet market. Keep in mind Ford tried to create a second pickup brand with Lincoln but the attempt failed after just a few years.

UNFINISHED PLASTIC ALL OVER THE EXTERIOR , CHEAP GOOD FOR A YEAR TIRES, BLOWN PLASTIC INTERIORS , ALL THERE MOTORS ARE FROM THE LAST DECADE, FAKE ALLISON , 4 BANGER MOTORS IS THERE NEW WIN TO THE WORLD, YOUR RIGHT , THERE TOP RETAIL BE CAUSE THEY COST LESS TO MAKE AND THERE FOR THE AVERAGE GUY CAN AFFORD. STUPID LOOKING GRILLS, FANGS, CAR LIKE DASH NOW, BOW TIE DIRECTLY UNDER HOOD , BED STEPS, BUMPER STEPS, A TAIL GATE THAT HITS HITCH RECEIVER, THIN SEATS , LITTLE TINY KNOBS ON THE DASH , SAME STEERING WHEEL AND CONSOLE FOR YEARS NOW. 2. Exactly! GM has led in truck sales for the longest time. Ford is heavily reliant on fleet vehicles so they can say that they sell the most trucks, but GM doesn’t count fleet sales as part of their figures in truck sales. Also, Ford figures in some of their medium duty trucks in their numbers as well up to the F-550 I believe. So what’s the problem with chevy and GMC combining their figures? They’re the same damn truck lol. I’m really interested in seeing how GM sales will be now with the new interiors. I’m sure they’re going to have a lot more sales with the much needed interior improvement.

      1. When combined GM does count more trucks. The Silverado counts from 1500 to 5500, just like Ford counts from 150-550. But you have to add the GMC 1500-3500. Also GMC has way more new truck dealers. In my area we have a combined 12 Chevy/GMC dealers compared to 7 Ram dealers and only 6 Ford dealers. Also the GMC and Chevy trucks are advertised separately. When watching Football I see two GM truck commercials compared to one Ford and one Ram commercial.

    3. Actually all brands now rely on fleet sells and non of them actually report fleet sales so it is no way to prove one out of every Ford truck is a fleet vehicle. Before the bailout fleet sales actually cost the big three money but now they are very lucrative. In fact as reported by the automobile website, GM was the last of the big three caught dumping inventory to make sales look better. First, Ford reported that they would stop building sedans in America. Mary Bara rushed to announce that GM was ramping up sedan production because GM was confident that Ford owners would by GM products. Of course it didn’t happen as Ford owners moved on to imports and crossovers. GM dumped sedans into rental fleets two years in a row when GM inventory became bloated at dealerships. This drove down the value of GM sedans and they were still on the hook to buy them back from rental car companies. Mary Barra told shareholders that sedan sales were up when confronted about the matter. Even worse, when Hertz went bankrupt. Over 20 percent of their fleet was GM vehicles which was higher than any other automaker. Next, the Lincoln truck didn’t really fail no more than the Cadillac truck did. What GM and Ford both learned was that most truck buyers were not interested in going to a luxury dealership to buy a truck. Ford moved the Lincoln truck over to the F-Series and renamed it the Platinum. GM stopped producing the Cadillac truck in 2013 and introduced the Chevy Silverado High Country in 2014. The Lincoln was never meant to compete with the GMC Sierra but was actually above it just like the Cadillac truck. The GMC Sierra starts out as a base model single cab with vinyl seats. The Lincoln truck started out a base model crew cab with leather.

Besides, this is a misleading article. Trying to make it look like the F series isn’t the number one selling truck. Compare sales to Chevy or compare them to GMC. Don’t combine the two companies and say “ooohh, ooohh…. they outsold them!”

  6. I can remember working for Ford back in the 1980’s and they were hell bent on their new Taurus outselling the Honda Accord. As the deadline grew closer it was obvious that they were falling short. Someone at Ford picked up the phone and called all the rental car companies, Hertz, Avis and the rest with a sweetheart of a deal on a certain number of new Taurus’s. Ford did outsell the Accord that year (1986 or 1987), and then spent a boatload of PR money to celebrate. But then Honda figured out how they did it and called foul so Ford backed down. After that I never paid much attention to Ford’s F-150 bragging….

    1. In their defense, the Taurus was an excellent effort. Too bad they put a garbage transmission in there with sub-standard 3.8 head gaskets, then in ’96 they fix the trans and engine issue with an odd design. And finally after ’00 they decided to let it rot and (like today) put all effort into trucks…

  8. Since its a numbers game ,I wonder how many trucks are sitting and not being shipped, for what ever reasons. I have a 2022 Silverado HD ordered and built and not shipped yet. 5 months sitting in Canada.
My son ordered a ford F-450 at same time . It has been slow getting it built as well, but he was notified it will be delivered this week to dealer.
The only difference is how each one communicates to the customer when they place an order.
Anyway I am not convinced the data holds any true value due to chip ,supply issues, and what information is used to compare .
Maybe someone should do statistics from start to finish on how long it takes to get a vehicle .

    1. July of 2021 ordered a 2022 F-350 KIng Ranch, in one week we had a vin # , week 4 it bucked and was built. it sat for 11 days waiting for a rail car , week 8 it delivered, full communication from my dealer , truck has ran flawless for 9 months now. could not be happier. my 2019 denali duramax has 4 recalls currently, injectors, re-gen , engine heater cord, sensor , and the allison trans bangs in the morings if it does not heat up for 15 minutes, and I live in Florida.

You are absolutely spot on. It’s also a militant work force, severe regulations and taxes by the state.

The Great State of Illinois has cratered industry. As an example: Caterpillar headquartered in Illinois has moved much manufacturing out of Illinois into China and into the South and Mid South.

You look at the Caterpillar product families starting with diesel engines – all made outside of Illinois.

Hydraulic Excavators – all made outside of Illinois.

Loader/Backhoes – all made outside of Illinois.

Scrapers – still made in Illinois

Off highway trucks – still made in Illinois

Motor Graders – all made outside Illinois.

Track Type Tractors and Loaders – mostly outside Illinois.

Wheel Loaders – mostly outside Illinois.

Paving Products – all outside Illinois

Skid steer loaders and mini excavators – all outside Illinois.

Undercarriage parts – made in China.

All the small branded stuff is made by vendors outside Illinois.

The entire distilled spirts industry in Illinois has moved out due to severe worker comp laws.

So government regulations has a huge part to play in the demise of the rust belt.

  10. Meh, combining two models to outsell one model is not impressive. Especially when you consider GM has more dealerships, advertising space and trims. I mean in my area there are like 12 dealerships combined that sell new Chevy and GMC trucks. Compared to 7 Ram dealers and only 6 Ford dealers. Also GMC and Chevy don’t advertise the trucks together so combined they get more advertising space. Then there is the obvious fact that GM combined counts a bigger series of trucks than Ford when added together.

  11. Pretty easy to be the best selling truck when you’re shipping them off right off the assembly line without features that are supposed to be standard equipment with no option to install the features once parts are available….. $80,000 truck and you can’t get it with the simplest of features like heated seats or heated steering wheel? Pathetic grab at a statistic for a headline
