GM Ends Chevy Equinox Production At CAMI Plant

Production of the Chevy Equinox compact crossover at the GM CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario has come to a conclusion, with GM shutting the plant down to begin retooling and preparation for production of its BrightDrop Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 electric delivery vans.

The last Canadian-built Chevy Equinox rolled off the assembly line at CAMI on Thursday, April 28th, although the compact crossover will continue to be produced at the GM San Luis Potosí plant and GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico. The new Chevy Equinox EV will arrive for the 2024 model year, however GM has not yet confirmed where this model will be produced.

Production of the BrightDrop Zevo 600 will commence at the Canadian facility in the fourth quarter of this year, GM said in a release, with Zevo 400 production set to ramp up at the facility in early 2023. The first 500 examples of the Zevo 600, which were ordered by FedEx, are being produced by a third-party supplier at a separate facility in Michigan while renovation work at the CAMI plant is underway.
GM says its team will have installed the BrightDrop production equipment at the facility by September, with employees returning to work in October for training on the new line. The plant will operate on one shift rotation until Zevo 400 production comes online next year. A third production shift may be added if there is enough demand for the two commercial van models, the automaker also said.
Marissa West, newly-appointed president and managing director of GM Canada, said the automaker is targeting a record turnaround time for the Ingersoll plant renovations.
“CAMI Assembly is playing a key role in GM’s vision for a zero-emissions future,” she said. “We plan to retool our Ingersoll plant in record time to support the start of BrightDrop EV production in Canada before year-end.”
The BrightDrop Zevo 600 and Zevo 400 ride on a dedicated EV architecture, tapping GM’s Ultium model battery design and Ultium drive motor technology. The larger Zevo 600, which will launch in dual-motor all-wheel-drive form, has an estimated range of around 250 miles and boasts 600 cubic feet of cargo space, with a GVWR of fewer than 10,000 pounds. It will eventually also launch in a single motor front-wheel-drive configuration. The Zevo 400, meanwhile, utilizes the same platform and powertrain technology but has a shorter wheelbase of just over 150 inches and 400 cubic feet of cargo space.
The CAMI plant will have a max annual production output of roughly 30,000 units between both the Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 models.
