Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Silverado sales during the first quarter of 2022 kept the Bow Tie brand’s full-size truck line in third place in its segment. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) continued in first place with a 31 percent decrease in sales to 140,701 units while the Ram Pickup remained in second with a 15 percent decrease in sales to 127,116 units. The Silverado followed in third with a four percent decrease in sales to 121,107 units.

The Silverado’s corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales), took fourth with a 10 percent decrease in sales to 56,617 units. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth with an 18 percent increase in sales to 22,643 units. The Tundra was the model in the segment to show a bump in sales volume. Meanwhile, the Nissan Titan rounded out the rear with a 14 percent decrease in sales to just 6,415 units. Less deliveries than that – exactly 6,009 units – prevented the Silverado from taking second place.

From a segment share standpoint, the Silverado held 26 percent segment share, up four percentage points – the biggest increase in its segment. The F-Series led with a 30 percent share, down six percentage points while the Ram Pickup held a 27 percent segment share, down one percentage point. Following the Silverado’s 26 percent share was the Sierra with a 12 percent segment share, up one percentage point. The Tundra, meanwhile, held a five percent segment share, up two percentage points, while the Titan maintained a mere one percent segment share.

On a combined basis, sales of the two GM full-size pickup truck lines, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, decreased six percent to 177,724 units for a 38 percent segment share. That puts The General solidly in the lead as the best seller of full-size pickup trucks in America during the first quarter of 2022, with over 37K more deliveries than Ford.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Silverado sales kept the nameplate in third place while closing in on second. Even so, the Silverado gained the most share in its segment during the quarter, up four percentage points year-over-year. Only the Tundra’s growth of two percentage points came close.

Production interruptions of the Silverado were responsible for the negative sales trend, making us wonder just how much The General could have dominated the market had it been . As a reminder, Silverado production was halted for a week in August 2021 and for another week in September 2021 at both the GM Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana and GM Silao Assembly plant in Mexico due to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. Production was then halted again for two weeks in April 2022 at the Fort Wayne plant.

This is after General Motors, back in January, added a second shift to ramp up production of the popular Chevy Silverado HD pickup range at the GM Oshawa Assembly plant in southern Ontario. The automaker just announced that it will add a third shift to have that plant begin building the Chevy Silverado 1500 light duty pickup. Once that third shift is actived at the Oshawa facility, it will be GM’s only truck plant capable of producing the heavy-duty Silverado HD and light-duty Silverado 1500 on the same production line.

So, in spite of even recent plant idling, it appears that Chevy is adding production capacity to meet soaring demand for its full-size pickups in both the U.S. and Canada.

And that demand will almost assuredly grow as the highly anticipated 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 refresh begins getting delivered to buyers. The refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado features a new front fascia along along with a completely overhauled interior with new and bigger screens, while offering the latest automotive tech. Additionally, the range-topping High Country model offers GM’s top-rated Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system. All of these improvements are joined by the all-new 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 as the new flagship off-road model in the automaker’s light-duty pickup portfolio.

Just 10 days after Chevy revealed the new Silverado, Toyota revealed its all-new, 2022 Toyota Tundra. And while it was the only truck to post a sales increase during the second quarter of 2022, the Tundra still hasn’t even sold half as many units as the Sierra, remaining far below the Silverado in terms of sales volume.

Weeks later, Chevy revealed its upcoming Silverado EV at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) as the first-ever, all-electric Silverado. The Bow Tie brand’s approach to truck design and packaging is already receiving high praise. Set to arrive next year, the all-new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV made its big debut  in both well-equipped RST First Edition and fleet-focused WT trim levels. Those two models will also be joined by the all-new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV Trail Boss.

Silverado EV Trail Boss

The Silverado EV is engineered from the ground up to be exclusively an electric vehicle. Rather than utilizing the automaker’s existing body-on-frame T1 platform for internal combustion engine (ICE) trucks, the Silverado EV utilizes a dedicated electric vehicle platform called BT1 that leverages the Ultium battery pack as a fundamental part of the vehicle’s structure.

Silverado EV Interior

The Silverado EV will compete head-to-head against the all-new 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning that debuted last May. Ford’s electric truck has already proven to be so popular that The Blue Oval is nearly doubling production of the Lightning just as order books opened in January. Meanwhile, the Silverado EV won’t arrive until 2023, starting with the WT in the spring of 2023, followed by the fully-loaded RST First Edition in the fall of 2023. No availability date has been shared yet for the Trail Boss.

Speaking of Ford, Chevy’s cross-town rival recently announced the Ford F-150 Rattler as a fresh new rival for the Chevy Silverado Z71 and GMC Sierra X31 to compete in the rugged, entry level off-road market.

2023 Ford F-150 Rattler

All that news is no surprise since pickup trucks continue to be the top-selling vehicles for the Detroit Big Three. And you can bet that the Bow Tie brand is counting on the new models, including the refreshed 2022 Silverado, all-new Silverado ZR2, and the Silverado EV, to take it to the top of the segment. GM has already done that with its Silverado and Sierra truck lines combined, but Chevy will be more than happy to lead the way by itself, with GMC Sierra sales being “gravy.”

As we’ve said before, GM just needs to build enough trucks to meet increasing demand, and GM’s latest plans in starting Silverado production at the Oshawa plant, seem to show that it is doing just that.

  1. Now thats another ugly silverado in red with all the cheap un-finished black plastic all over the exterior , plastic grill, plastic hood piece, wheel lip moldings, cheap door handles, stupid looking mirrors , looks just like a cheap work truck, no wow factor GM vehicle.

    Reply
    1. For work trucks and off road trucks the black plastic is a positive. Black paint easily scratches and chips and it gives that rugged look others want. The door handles are painted and far from cheap. Again, stop whining about the mirrors, they are in a useful spot that allows a better view by the pillar. Function > looks. Just because you are some suburban dad with a image complex and no use for a truck doesn’t mean you have to keep complaining about it and how it “looks”. It is a truck, a tool, and any added usefulness is much appreciated even if some kids have a problem with how it looks…

      1. So Even COMMONSENCE admits the truck looks like sh!t with no style. they cost 90K they should look better. COMMONSENCE is typical like his friends JOE BRandon and his sisters AOC and the squad , along with his mother E Warren. Your on spin cycle with your blind spot mirrors , when there really cheap junk. If GM was worried about blind spots the mirror would be 2 piece. guys like commonsence by the sle or custom because they don’t have any money abd they need a 12 year warantee to save for the next one.

  3. Chevrolet is running 3rd RAM and FORD are kicking their behinds.. CHEVY knew this would happen when they gave the buyer a warmed over Chevy pickup after RAM introduced their pickup. Life long Chevy and GMC fan. After riding in a new RAM off and on for a year I can see why Chevy has fallen to 3rd place.. its kinda sad

    1. Unless you actually read the article. Chevy and GMC combined to be the best seller by 37,000 units delivered
So like always the Gm corporate twins sell the most but many still believe the f-150 is the best seller.
Only because GM splits its pickup into two brands Ford wins, it’s been that way for many years.
Seriously read the article again it clearly states GM delivered the most trucks
and they even idled some of their(GM’s) plants so they may have been able to deliver even more.
Again facts stated in the article
and RAM only took 2nd by 6000 units, not really a “buttkicking”
maybe read the facts a bit better before using the keyboard, You give my name a bad name.
