Chevy Silverado 1500 Bed Side Storage Boxes Discontinued

The Chevy Silverado 1500’s Bed Side Storage Boxes accessory has been discontinued, GM Authority has learned.

The Bed Side-Mounted Bed Storage Box is tagged with RPO code RW9, and was available for pre-fresh Chevy Silverado 1500 models, including the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited. Now, however, the feature has been discontinued going forward with the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup.

The Bed Side-Mounted Bed Storage Box was designed to offer maximum functionality in the bed of the Chevy Silverado 1500, as well as to protect cargo with a lockable storage space capable of holding tools, camping gear, or whatever else you may need.

The storage boxes would anchor directly to the Chevy Silverado bedside over the wheel housing, with a lockable, tethered door. The box was made from weather-resistant materials to prevent corrosion and dust intrusion, while the stainless steel hinges and aluminum locks were weatherproofed as well. Each of the lockable boxes included a pair of keys per box, and would mount flush against the bedside.

Sizing for the boxes varied depending on the truck application, but each was about 60 inches in length, 19 inches in height, and 10 inches in depth, providing over 7 cubic feet of space. The box was designed to carry upwards of 50 pounds of stuff, with 25 pounds in front and 25 pounds in the rear, and also included a center removable tray for smaller items, as well as a glow-in-the-dark child safety release handle. What’s more, each box came with two cupholders and a set of drain plugs in front and rear to enable it to act as a cooler.

Moving forward, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is available with four engine options, including the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, and 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax. Under the skin is the GM T1 platform, with production taking place at the GM Silao Plant in Mexico, GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, and GM Oshawa plant in Canada.

  1. I thought these were a good idea. $500 is a bit steep, but what isn’t these days. If I had a t1xx I would have picked one up but probably not two.

  2. I actually was optioning these boxes, I liked that they looked like they belonged in the truck, aesthetically. They didn’t look like the one size fits all clunky aftermarket boxes on the market. It’s too bad they are now obsolete. 🙁
