Note that this sales data and report refers to the Trailblazer subcompact crossover, and not the larger body-on-frame SUV that’s sold under the same nameplate in other global markets.

From a segment share standpoint, the Trailblazer earned just four percent of the segment, down five percentage points. The HR-V saw its segment share nearly double year-over-year to 10 percent, up nine percentage points. The Compass held an 11 percent segment share, up four percentage points, while the Kicks held a nine percent share, flat year-over-year. The rest of the field held less than seven percent segment share.
Other GM models in the segment fared as follows: Trax held a three percent segment share, down three percentage points. The Encore GX held a two percent segment share, down five percentage points like the Trailblazer. And the Encore held a mere one percent segment share, down one percentage point.
The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment – the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore, as well as their corporate cousins, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX – accounted for a cumulative 22,409 deliveries, good for 10 percent segment share. This puts The General in third place in the segment from an overall volume standpoint.

Toyota recently launched a new model, the Corolla Cross, to compete in the mainstream B-crossovers segment. The Corolla Cross will likely end up replacing the C-HR, which has performed poorly from a sales volume standpoint. During the first quarter, Toyota saw a combined 14,412 sales of its two crossovers that it currently fields.
Sales Numbers - Toyota Mainstream Subcompact Crossovers - Q1 2022 - USA
MODEL | Q1 22 / Q1 21 | Q1 22 | Q1 21 |

Meanwhile, Hyundai – the Kona and Venue – and Kia – the Seltos, Niro, and Soul – saw cumulative 56,554 deliveries, which account for a combined 21 percent segment share, to take first place.
Sales Numbers - Hyundai - Kia Mainstream Subcompact Crossovers (With Soul) - Q1 2022 - USA
MODEL | Q1 22 / Q1 21 | Q1 22 | Q1 21 |
---|---|---|---|
KIA SOUL | -17.84% | 14,124 | 17,191 |
KIA SELTOS | -33.76% | 11,119 | 16,786 |
KIA NIRO | +114.01% | 9,226 | 4,311 |
HYUNDAI KONA | -31.29% | 15,536 | 22,610 |
HYUNDAI VENUE | +13.23% | 6,549 | 5,784 |
TOTAL | -15.19% | 56,554 | 66,682 |
However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 42,430 deliveries for a combined 14 percent segment share, placing the Hyundai-Kia chaebol in second place.

MODEL | Q1 22 / Q1 21 | Q1 22 | Q1 21 |

TOTAL | -14.27% | 42,430 | 49,491 |
The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 17 percent to 226,159 units during Q1 2022, meaning Trailblazer sales significantly underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
While Chevy Trailblazer sales place the model in 12th place among 20 entries during the first quarter of 2022. That’s a steep drop compared to the same timeframe a year ago, when the Trailblazer took second place in its segment. More recently, Trailblazer placed fifth during the fourth quarter of 2021.
The model’s lackluster sales performance is the result of limited supply as a result of production disruptions. Luckily, GM is working to resolve these issues. According to GM Authority sources, GM will expand production of the Trailblazer for the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, 2023 Chevy Trailblazer production will start on April 24th for both of the aforementioned markets.
That’s a good thing, since rivals continue to launch new models into the highly-competitive mainstream subcompact crossover segment. Beyond the new Toyota Corolla Cross mentioned above, Honda recently revealed the all-new 2023 Honda HR-V, debuting a fresh second generation for the Trailblazer rival.
For its part, Chevy’s subcompact crossover has proven to be popular among buyers, and offers unique variants from the sporty RS to the off-roady Activ. Just this past September the Trailblazer earned its highest-ever share in the segment, and the model continues to receive top ratings. In November the Trailblazer received a perfect reliability rating by Consumer Reports. And in February the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer earned a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This follows the same award from IIHS back in September for the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer through the 2022 model year.
As we’ve said before, GM has a winner on its hands with the Trailblazer, and consistent production will enable the model to claw its way back into the upper echelon of sales in its competitive set.

I’d mention earlier, GM can utilize CAMI or a Mexican facility to supplement small CUV production, the “make everything in Asia” crack habit American companies have is costing GM sales….
Can’t sell something you don’t build.
It is in high demand
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! Everyone else is finding more chips for this segment, and GM could well loose momentum as the cars age and new models enter market.
Kinda stunning seeing GM of all companies dominating the sub compact space last year and to see a stumble like this for Chevrolet and Buick is bad from a consumer loyalty and branding perspective–this segment is often sold as a first car
You can’t sell what you don’t have.
