Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Equinox sales during the first quarter of 2022 put the Bow Tie’s compact crossover in third place in its segment. The Toyota RAV4 (once again) placed first with an 11 percent decrease in sales to 101,192 units, far eclipsing the field, while the Honda CR-V held second place with a 38 precent drop to 58,579 units. The Equinox took third, with an 11 percent drop to 56,036, placing it within just over 2,500 units of the second place CR-V. The Mazda CX-5 took fourth with an impressive 24 percent sales gain to 50,653 units.
All other contenders saw less than 50,000 deliveries each. This includes the Equinox’s own corporate cousin, the GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), which took 11th place with a 47 percent jump to 24,944 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Equinox held 10 percent share, up one percentage point. The RAV4 held a dominant 18 percent segment share, up two percentage points. Like the Equinox, the CR-V held a 10 percent segment share, down three percentage points. The rest of segment, which is comprised of 17 nameplates, held a single-digit segment share, including the Terrain, which held a four percent segment share, up two percentage points.
Combining GM’s two entries, the Chevy Equinox and the GMC Terrain, account for 80,980 deliveries and a 14 percent segment share. That puts The General squarely in second place ahead of the popular CR-V, but still over 20K units behind the top-selling RAV4.

The GM Authority Take
Chevy Equinox sales vastly improved over the previous quarter, placing better than a year ago even though overall sales volume was even better then. This quarter’s sales could have been even higher were it not for production being severely impacted by the ongoing shortages, including but not limited to the global semiconductor microchip shortage, resulting in the idling of three plants that produce the Bow Tie brand’s best-selling crossover for much of 2021. That resulted in nearly non-existent inventory in October 2021, with just 1,000 units available nationwide at the beginning of that month. Production was originally scheduled to restart on October 4th before being pushed back to October 15th and then delayed again to November 1st.
In March 2022, GM announced that it will increase production of the Equinox and Terrain in Mexico as part of a new manufacturing strategy for the GM San Luis Potosà plant. As a result, Equinox sales should increase as production ramps back up and inventory channels begin to be filled.
As a reminder, the 2022 Chevy Equinox received a mid-cycle enhancement, or model refresh, representing the fifth model year of the crossover’s third generation. The updated model features new front and rear fascias, small updates to the interior, and the introduction of the sporty-looking RS trim level. In addition, GM Authority recently learned that the 2022 Chevy Equinox Premier will soon offer a new Redline Edition package, along with many other changes, updates, and new features across the model line. Better yet, the 2022 Equinox is even slightly more affordable than the outgoing 2021 model.
News about Chevy’s popular compact crossover continues to get better. In January, GM announced the first-ever 2024 Chevy Equinox EV alongside other upcoming all-electric vehicles during the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The upcoming Equinox Electric is slated to launch during the 2023 calendar year in both sporty RS and LT trim levels.
Already, though, Stellantis revealed its first battery-electric Jeep in March as a direct rival to other future small electric crossovers from GM, like the Equinox EV. And to challenge the current gasoline-powered Equinox, the all-new sixth-generation 2023 Honda CR-V was spotted in prototype form last August.
In spite of rival challenges and production challenges, the latter of which are already being addressed, Chevy Equinox sales are faring well, and we expect them to only improve from here.

Comments
As the present and very satisfied owner of a 2009 Chevy Equinox , I feel that GM could have done more for this vehicle . First, it should had kept a V6 engine as an option because it is stronger and runs better with the Equinox weight class, even if its MPG is less. Second, it was an ideal platform as a hybrid probably using the Chevy Volt technology. This point is why the RAV4 sells more now having its hybrid model.
But now as an electric, GM can recover the lead as the best selling crossover, having a larger size interior than the Chevy Bolt EUV and the future Chevy Blazer EV and better reliability than the two imports that sell a bit more.
Go, Equinox !
Raymond Ramirez I own a 2010 Chevy Equinox LTZ with the 3.0 V6 and I am very happy with this vehicle.. I agree GM should have kept the V6 engine option and the 2.0 Turbo 4 cylinder option. However I am not a fan of hybrid I think the EV being sold along side the current Equinox is the best bet.
I have a 2019 Premiere with the 1.5 turbo and it did fine fully loaded on the interstate through eastern Ky we averaged 29.6 mpg and it was not babied at all.
Can’t sell what you don’t have!
Old school my friends wife has a 2018 Equinox with the 1.5 liter engine and she loves it gets driven every day, it’s good on fuel MPG’S, it fits her stuff and her two kids! The only problem they ever had with it was on the way to buffalo NY for a wedding the the hose for the turbo came loose my friend being a mechanic fixed on the side of the road… But other then that it’s a solid, reliable, cheap to purchase SUV. As a side note they looked at a Mazda CX3 SUV before the equinox but decided on the equinox because the number 1.the dealer wouldn’t budge on the price, number 2.the equinox has more room inside and number 3.my friend did research on The Mazda and the Sky active engines are know premature timing chain failure! So all and all people can bash GM and Chevy all they want but with proper maintenance they are very reliable vehicles
Chevy Man: I agree. Working at a Mazda store (and Volvo), I know first hand just how many issues the Mazda’s have. And yet, just like Toyota and Honda, those issues seem to be impressively brushed under the rug! I just don’t get how the Japanese brands constantly get passes on so much. I will give them one thing. They are impressive at marketing and hiding stuff. I’ve said it before and always will. Toyota could put wheels and a T on a turd and the sheep would still buy it. (come to think of it, they already do. It’s called the Prius)
Hey Dan, think of it this way. If you owned a Toyota and had problems, would you admit it? You’d get laughed at over and over because you were a sucker for buying a Toyota and now you’re having issues. Sadly they didn’t learn there lesson and will buy another one.
GMC Fan: Well, that is certainly a great point. Maybe I’m just different because it doesn’t matter what I own/drive. If I’m having problems with it I tell others and admit it. Great example was with the 2020 Cadillac CT4 I had. I really did love it, but the A/C stopped working only a few weeks after buying it. Easily fixed and was a switch in the HVAC control panel. I openly said about that on here. Then a few months later, a strange noise developed and the local dealer heard it but said they couldn’t fix/find it. I was certainly frustrated, but again I talked about it on here. Thankfully the selling dealer was able to find and fix it quickly and I was back to loving it.
So why do you think import brand owners are so afraid to admit to the many issues?
Not in the market for that sized suv, but from an exterior looks only perspective, I rate the nox, cr-v and cx-5 as a tie for first with the rav being 2nd.
I still read these articles, but until this chip shortage and inventory issues level out, any sales numbers are kind of irrelevant at this time.
Anyhow, I just can’t believe so many people still buy the Rav4. It really must have something to do with them offering the Hybrid, but so does the CR-V. But here I’m going to prove a point that I constantly make that the Toyota’s are average at best. There is a known issue with the hybrid’s where they make a very loud and annoying noise. To me it almost sounds like they have a bad water pump and it’s kind of like an internal grinding/rubbing, high pitched noise. If you stand along the street and listen to them drive past or come to a stop and take off, you can hear it. All newer Toyota hybrids make it, but the Rav4 seems to be the absolute worst. My neighbors across the street from my home have a brand new one along with a few month old Highlander hybrid. Both cars are bad, but the Rav4 is so bad that I can hear them from about 3 blocks away. When she backs into the drive (or backing out), I swear the thing is about to blow up. It’s so bad, my two kids even complain about it. One day I was outside and she was backing out. I asked her how she can stand that noise and her exact words to me were: “The dealer told me it was normal”. WTF!! I told her she needs to leave it sitting in the service drive and tell them not to return it till it’s fixed.
Yup, that (false) Toyota quality!
I don’t know if it is some kind of safety regulation or maybe marketing gimmick, but it now seems that a lot of hybrids, especially Toyotas, emit this weird constant high pitched droning whine. I don’t remember hearing this from hybrids previously and I assumed it was just a new safety feature to let pedestrians know a moving car is nearby since hybrids (and EVs) are quieter than most other cars. That whine always makes me think of flying saucers in cheap 1950s sci fi films.
In China, for example, there is a regulation that electric bikes have to make such a constant sound because of too many accidents with unaware pedestrians getting hit by silent e-bikes.
No wonder there sales are down. I ordered a 2022 equinox in September of 2021 and still waiting on it to show up. Can’t sell what you don’t have.
As a proud owner of a 2020 Nox LT 2.0, I am in a quandary as to why the 2.0 was discontinued. I get 32 mpg on the highway consistently and lots of power when needed. I could not imagine owning one with a 1.5.
Actually, the 1.5L has enough power. My problem with it is that it only gets that power by revving up and then it gets loud.
Jeep Cherokee sales dropped off a cliff. I wonder why; I would have thought the Jeep brand would have been in the fight here in this market segment.
StuartH… The Jeep Cherokee is a nice looking SUV but it’s getting a little long in the tooth even when Jeep updated it three years it’s still on an almost ten year old platform and the Cherokee is not the greatest on gas either also other brands like Chevy, Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, even Nissan has moved ahead of Jeep it almost seems like Jeep is focusing on the high profit Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoner instead of bringing their small SUVs up to date.
I feel GM should have kept the V6 option as well. I own a 99 Blazer which is still going strong as a daily driver with the 4.3 V6. I ended up testing a new Terrain rental car last year that a friend of mine had. It felt a little sluggish compared to what I’m used to. But I understand GM has their hands tied with the gas mileage regulations that the government imposes on us.
As many who are experts in engine can confirm, the larger engine may burn more gasoline, but it runs at lesser RPMs due to its greater torque and hence gets better HP at a lower RPM, too. On highways it is almost idling! I have driven cars with engines at both extremes, an 1967 Olds Cutless Supreme with a 400 CI ( 6.5 L) V8, and a 1985 Volvo 850 with a 2 L turbo. The turbo is good for economy but the V8 is great for power. I understand why GM is giving the present Equinox a smallef I4 turbo over the V6, but it will wear down sooner. My 3.4 L V6 had no servicing need except an annual oil and filter change (Mobil 1).
