Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Blazer sales during the first quarter of 2022 kept the Bow Tie brand’s midsize crossover in the middle of the crowded mainstream midsize and full-size crossover segments, comprised of 21 entries. The Toyota Highlander took second place with a three percent increase to 66,026 units while The Blue Oval’s two entries placed third and fourth, with the Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) taking third with a 35 percent drop to 42,736 units and the Ford Edge (see running Ford Edge sales) taking fourth place with a 19 percent growth rate to 26,412 units. The Blazer’s corporate cousin and the Bow Tie brand’s other entry, the Chevy Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales), took seventh place with a 38 percent decrease to 23,464 units. The Blazer took 10th place with a two percent decrease in sales to 18,808 units. The Blazer’s other corporate cousin, the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales), was just two spots up from last with a 53 decrease spiral to 9,336 units.

Narrowing down the segment to only midsize crossovers with two rows of seating places the Blazer in third place out of six entries with a 19 percent segment share, down one percentage point. The Edge remained at the top with a 26 percent share, up five percentage points, followed by the Santa Fe with a 25 percent share, down two percentage points.

As we noted above, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which we typically include in the midsize two-row segment, is now offered in both two- and three-row configurations. Unfortunately, Jeep’s parent, Stellantis, does not break out sales figures of both models, leading us to remove it from this comparison.

The two-row mid-size mainstream crossover segment contracted five percent to 101,515 units during Q1 2022, meaning Blazer sales outperformed this segment average as well.

The GM Authority Take

In spite of production disruptions, Chevy Blazer sales have remained mid-pack in the crowded mainstream midsize and full-size crossover segment while placing a solid third in the two-row mid-size mainstream crossover segment during Q1 2022.

Chevy Blazer sales continue to be negatively impacted by low availability and inventory. At the beginning of March 2022, Chevy Blazer national supply was just nine days. By comparison, it was at a mere 11 days this past December 2021 and a scant five days in November. In fact, supply of the midsize crossover has been extremely low for well over a year now.

The continuing drop in inventory suggests a considerable excess of demand over supply for the Chevy Blazer, which can often be explained by the various ongoing parts and material shortages, headlined by the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. The scenario has impacted vehicle production at auto plants around the world, including the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico where the Blazer is produced for the Americas. Blazer production at the facility was idle from August 23rd to September 6th before finally restarting on October 18th.

At GM, smaller vehicles like the Chevy Equinox and Blazer have been impacted the most by the microchip shortage. Since the automaker’s larger vehicles, like full-size trucks and SUVs, tend to be more profitable, the automaker continues to prioritize its chip supply for plants that build these vehicles.

Refreshed 2023 Chevy Blazer

For some good news, GM debuted the refreshed 2023 Chevy Blazer in February. The updated, 2023 Chevy Blazer arrives with revised front and rear fascias, different LED headlights and taillights, and a new, larger infotainment display.

A prototype of the upcoming Chevy Blazer EV

Having reinvented the Blazer for this generation by migrating from a body-on-frame SUV to a unibody crossover, GM is once again reinventing the nameplate, this time leveraging the Blazer brand in conjunction with the upcoming 2024 Chevy Blazer EV, which GM pre-announced in February. A month later, The General released its first teaser clip of its upcoming Chevy Blazer SS – a powerful battery-electric vehicle that will put other performance EV crossovers like the Ford Mustang Mach-E directly in its crosshairs. GM Authority recently captured our very first real-world photos of the battery-powered crossover testing in prototype form in April.

“Chevrolet provided a glimpse of the all-electric Chevrolet Blazer SS, which will be the first Chevy EV to feature a performance SS model” GM’s brief, two-sentence press release said. “The all-electric Blazer SS will make its debut later this year and will be available in spring 2023.”

Overall, if GM can make enough of the Chevy Blazer to meet pent-up demand, then sales will only grow. That’s especially true with the impending launch of the refreshed 2023 model and planned EV models.
