Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac Escalade sales during the first quarter of 2022 keep the marque’s flagship model at the top of its competitive set even more so than before. Sales grew seven percent to 10,505 units for a commanding lead in the full-size luxury SUV segment, posting the only positive gain among its rivals.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer moved into second place with 3,169 units – less than a third as many as the Escalade. The Lincoln Navigator (see running Lincoln Navigator sales) placed third with a 56 percent decline in sales to 2,148 units while the Infiniti QX80 followed in fourth with a segment-worst 75 percent decline to 1,064 units. The Lexus LX brought up the last position with a 58 percent decline in sales to just 558 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Cadillac Escalade held a 60 percent share, up an impressive 12 percentage points. In other words, the Escalade outsold all rivals combined during the quarter. The Grand Wagoneer posted an 18 percent segment share, while the Navigator’s segment share was cut in half to 12 percent, down an equal 12 percentage points. The QX80 saw its segment share drop to six percentage points, down a whopping 15 percentage points. Finally, the LX held a mere three percent segment share, down four percentage points.

The full-size luxury SUV segment contracted 14 percent to 17,444 units in Q1 2022, meaning that Escalade sales outperformed the segment average.

Below, we’ve included sales figures of full-size luxury crossovers for the sake of reference. Though they differ mechanically from the aforementioned body-on-frame SUVs by having a unibody construction, they are typically cross-shopped and considered as alternatives to the full-size luxury SUVs. Currently, the only full-size luxury crossovers are the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and the new BMW X7, though Audi is rumored to be working on a future Q9.

The GM Authority Take

The Cadillac Escalade sold more units than all of its rivals combined during Q1 2022 thanks to very strong demand for the all-new Escalade, which launched for the 2021 model year. It’s also healthy that GM is allocating all the supplies it can, including those pesky microchips, to ensure Escalade production is uninterrupted and availability is adequate.

It’s no surprise to see rivals try and take the Escalade’s crown with competing offerings in this highly lucrative space. Last fall, Land Rover introduced the redesigned 2022 Range Rover as a rival to the fifth-generation Escalade. Other noteworthy rivals include the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer from FCA Stellantis and the revamped 2022 LX from Lexus. In fact, the Grand Wagoneer’s quick ascendance to the second-best-selling spot in the segment is quite impressive.

2022 Range Rover

And while rivals continue their best-laid attempts to conquest Escalade customers, Cadillac just answers in kind, and then some – this time with the upcoming 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V. The luxury automaker’s new model sits at the intersection of opulence and ultra-high-performance, bringing a range-topping supercharged powerhouse to the luxury SUV. It sounds beastly and will finally debut on May 11th, 2022.

2023 Cadillac Escalade-V

The upcoming Escalade-V will be powered by GM’s supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 engine used in the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, among other high-performance GM models like the Camaro ZL1, third-generation Cadillac CTS-V, and C7 Corvette Z06.

During a recent media presentation attended by GM Authority, Global Vice President of Cadillac Rory Harvey said he has had the opportunity to drive the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V “through various phases of its development,” an experience that he classifies as “absolutely stunning.”

Looks like Escalade sales are about to fly by rivals in a blur.

  1. With Super Cruise being standard, it is a no brainer and enhances the appeal of the Escalade even further.

Lincoln have a lot of work cut out for them and they will be struggling getting to second place for BOF vehicles as concerned. The Grand Wagoneer sales volume just got started and will be interesting to see if increase in volume will be significant or the same for second quarter. And no surprise for Infiniti being second to last place as it is the oldest in the competition and the LX in spite of it being brand new, no one’s interested in it. And the X7 and GLS are fighting within each other for sales volume since both are unibody offerings from Germany.

  4. As GM Kills brands, it has now almost finished off Cadillac. Amazing. Sure GM Killed Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, and others…

But to destroy their premium brand, Cadillac, is really an achievement. Once the envy of the world, Cadillac no longer produces a quality, premium, luxury sedan.

    It will be over soon.
