The GM Authority Take

Though all 10 segment entries were in the red during the quarter, Buick Envision sales posted the biggest drop on a percentage basis. The performance is the direct result of production disruptions associated with (but not limited to) the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage.

Luckily, production of the 2023 Buick Envision, which represents the third model year of the premium compact crossover’s second generation, is finally underway at the GM Jinqiao plant in Beijing, China. After assembly at the Jinqiao facility, the Envision is then distributed to each of the four markets where the Buick brand does business: the United States, Canada, and Mexico (comprising the North American market), as well as locally across China.

The 2022 Buick Envision remains a strong model for the premium automaker, listed among the best new crossovers under $40,000 by Consumer Reports following a recognition just a few months earlier, where the publication named the 2021 Buick Envision as a top luxury SUV to buy.

As a reminder, the 2021 Buick Envision was completely overhauled (redesigned and re-engineered) in May of 2020. Besides an all-new platform, mechanicals, exterior design and cabin, the 2021 Envision added the Avenir as the range-topping trim, a first for the Envision nameplate.

The 2023 model remains largely unchanged from the current 2022 model year, save for a few changes to the color palette and package lineup. The crossover will continue to be powered by GM’s turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder LSY gasoline engine, rated at 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, as the only engine offering in North America. The four-cylinder is paired with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, while all-wheel-drive is optional.

  4. Try and find one on Dealer lots in Ontario Canada it’s almost impossible no wonder sales are terrible !

  5. You really can’t judge any cars sales right now with the availability to order a brand new car extremely limited it’s not fair to say this car or that car had poor sales… When the car companies are struggling to build cars at this point in time! If you look at car dealership lots most if not all of the cars are used!

  6. I looked at a dozen dealers trying to get the Envision Avenir. I found one that was over 500 miles from me. I was going to fly there but thankfully a dealer 1 hour away got delivery of of the car I was looking for. It is everything I expected and more. Hate that it’s made in China.

    1. It takes a special logic to manufacture products in China, while claiming to want more jobs created in America.

  7. 61% decrease??? Show me ONE dealership that even has one to sell!!! You can’t base numbers on the fact that production has been interrupted!! Great media presentation at its best!! Allocations are there but the vehicles are not. Kind of hard to sell them when you can’t even get them!!!

  8. GM is a Killer…

GM has Killed so many brands it’s almost like they really don’t want to be in the car business. GM Killed Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, Opel, SAAB, etc., why not Kill Buick too.

The one main reason to stay in the car business is to Kill Americans; GM excels at that.

    1. Mary Barra fan club… If we Americans didn’t turn out back on Buick 20-25 years ago then I guarantee GM should still be building them here! As far as all the brands GM killed… Well what’s the point of having Pontiac, Oldsmobile, SAAB… don’t make GM any money… If that’s the case then Ford should have kept Mercury of life support, Chrysler should have kept building DeSoto, Toyota should have kept on making non profitable Scions… There is a reason why car companies kill certain brands and keep others in Buick’s case they sell very well in China and I see quite a few in the United States. Anyway I will buy GM for life I have great luck with their cars and trucks.

    2. GM sells WAY more Buicks in China than here in the US. More than likely the only reason Buick stayed, and Oldsmobile got axed. Olds back in the day had the Cutlass outselling the Regal 10x.

      Reply
      1. Oh the Cutlass… And then it all went down hill for Oldsmobile they tried but truth be told in the 90s nobody wanted an Olds 88 or 98 anymore and unfortunately the Alero, Intrigue, and Aurora came to late to save Oldsmobile. I believe that if those cars would have come out at the beginning of the 90s that Oldsmobile would have survived but that’s ancient history we could argue that Pontiac should have been saved as a specialty low profit brand but in the business world that does not make economic sense.

  9. The headline would be better fitting if every SUV in this segment didn’t decline in sales. Since they all declined it should of been about how everyone’s sales declined do to production distributions for everyone, as you said in the article.

    1. David ,that’s a GM disgrace having customers wait 10 months for a current 2022 ST Encore GX ,it’s like they don’t want the business then complain sales are have tanked ,someone’s head should roll over this kind of inaction leaving customers in the lurch !
