General Motors’ logistics sub-brand BrightDrop will open its first Canadian dealership before the end of this year.
In a recent interview with Automotive News Canada, BrightDrop’s chief revenue officer, Steve Hornyak, said the company is in “active discussions,” with regard to establishing its first Canadian retail storefront. BrightDrop dealerships will not hold any inventory and will only process new sold orders, complete customer deliveries and provide aftersales service. The logistics brand’s vehicles will be built to order, meaning production of the customer’s vehicle will not begin until the order has been received and processed by GM.
BrightDrop will eventually have a handful Canadian dealers spanning the country’s west, east, central and northern markets, Hornyak explained. He also told Automotive News Canada the brand is only targeting a Canadian network consisting of “tens of dealers,” rather than the large number of storefronts that exist for mass-market brands like Chevy and GMC.
Hornyak added that BrightDrop has yet to receive any orders from companies located in Canada for its Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 delivery vans, but said there has been interest from some companies there and expected an official announcement from “known players up in Canada,” sometime in the near future. The company has received roughly 30,000 pre-orders for its Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 vans in the U.S. thus far, including orders from Fed Ex, Marchants Fleet, Walmart and Verizon. GM began accepting BrightDrop pre-orders shortly after the Zevo 600 debuted at CES in January 2021.
Production of the Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 vans will take place at the GM CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. BrightDrop production at the Canadian facility is expected to begin this December following an $800 million renovation and re-tooling effort. The Zevo 600 is currently being built at a facility in Michigan operated by a German supplier called Kuka AG, which GM contracted to build the initial 500-unit run of vehicles until the CAMI plant upgrades are complete.
