State Of Washington To Ban Gas-Powered Vehicles By 2030

Washington state is set to ban the sale of most new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2030.

A bill signed into law by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee last week indicates the state will instruct its interagency electric vehicle coordinating council to complete a scoping plan by December 31st, 2023, which will outline how to achieve the 2030 target. The measure, known as Clean Cars 2030, is described as “the most aggressive state target in the U.S. for the phaseout of gasoline cars,” setting a goal of outlawing the sale of such vehicles five earlier than California’s much-talked-about 2035 deadline.

The measure was passed as part of a so-called “Move Ahead Washington,” transportation package that was detailed last week, which is valued at nearly $17 billion. Legislators say the bill will help to “spur public and private investment in EVs and EV charging infrastructure and help Washingtonians save money on vehicle fuel and maintenance while enjoying cleaner air and water.”

The measure was first introduced by Washington Representative Nicole Macri in 2020, but was only signed into law by Inslee last week.

“Clean Cars 2030 puts Washington on the road to powering its vehicles with cheap, clean, renewable electricity produced in-state and reduces the threat that oil and gasoline pose to our air, water, health, and economy,” Macri said in a prepared statement.

In addition to Washington, a variety of other states have previously outlined their own plans to outlaw the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles within a certain timeframe, including New York and California. The federal government in Canada has also said it will outlaw new gasoline and diesel vehicle sales by 2035, while the Biden Administration has set a target of achieving 50 percent EV market share in the U.S. by 2030.

With federal and state governments moving to outlaw gasoline vehicle sales, the automotive industry is reacting accordingly. Virtually every major automaker now has its own aggressive EV rollout strategies, including GM, which previously said it would launch 30 new EVs globally by 2025. GM also said it will invest more than $35 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles by mid-decade.

The WEF’s vision for the common man is to live in a 250 square foot apartment in a high density apartment block and use public transportation. I am sure the WEF envisions the leaders living in gated community luxury estates, though.

        2. Eric Vest: A+ to you.

Your comment on the World Economic Forum forum about high density housing and public transportation is spot on. Denver now has high density high rise housing downtown and high density mid rise residential complexes outside the core and in the suburbs. Salt Lake City has hundreds of mid rise high density residential projects within the city and throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Reno has several huge mid and low rise high density residential projects currently.
In fact Reno has a huge mid rise high density residential complex just being completed called the Reno Experience in the site of a former mall shopping center. I predict the Reno Police Department will eventually have a substation in this complex to handle domestic violence and drug abuse related calls.
Aside from all this, the vehicle traffic in Denver, Salt Lake City and Reno is now just like Los Angeles. So public transportation will eventually need to come into further play, along with alternative smaller vehicles.
With this new lifestyle living for the masses, Mary and her corporate strategy team I feel are spot on with mini autonomous busses and small autonomous electric cars for people residing in these high density complexes. Also the workplace will shift from multi floor commercial offices to apartment suites with computer workstations. The newer generations will be automatons having their tangible goods and food/beverage delivered by Amazon, Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc. It will be a completely closed loop system.
Outside of this, IC vehicles will still rule outside of these living spaces if market choice has it the Adam Smith way versus mandatory state and electric vehicle laws and regulations which will eventually be challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court. Stay tuned for this. Let the Constitution prevail. We are in for very historic and exciting times.

          3. David, thank you for the post. It seems like many of the pro -BEV posters want to force everyone out of ICE vehicles and it is impossible to reason with them. If you look at the facts BEV’s are not an environmental panacea. The power plants powering the BEV cars pollute and the mining/manufacturing involved in lithium ion batteries is very bad. Most people don’t realize it, but a lot of the pollution from cars is created during the manufacturing process. It seems like the pro-BEV posters are all about in top down control with a disdain for anyone else’s preferences or freedom in general. Fortunately, I don’t see this insufferable behavior in my region of the country.

      1. Since you correctly mentioned the danger of EV’s being so dangerous in any accident they are involved in due to their weight and where it is located, the First Responders have been attending classes for well over a decade on how dangerous it is for all those involved in any accident with any EV. Dangerous for First Responders, occupants of the EV and occupants of the other vehicle(s) involved. The EV Lobbyists are going to great lengths to hide that information but if you have a friend, neighbor or relative that is a First Responder, ask them if they have been to these classes yet. Electrocution is a real possibility and so is a Lithium Ion fire which is difficult to extinguish.

There was not a serious analysis and discussion of these points when the Washington legislators passed this regulation. Washington State does have relatively cheap and plentiful electricity due to their hydro-electric plants. In many regions of the United States electricity is expensive, not plentiful, and the electric grid is fragile. Minimizing regulation and letting the market or in other words the collective judgement of the car buying public work is a much better course of action than turning over car purchasing decisions to the political class.

  26. The pollution from the electric power plants and the battery related mining and manufacturing negates the positive environmental impact of BEV’s. Does anyone really think the 4+ ton, 1,000 horsepower Hummer EV is environmentally superior to a three cylinder Chevrolet Trailblazer? Taking that Hummer EV off road, putting it into crab-walk, and running over the flora and fauna is not very environmentally good, either.

  27. As an Eastern Washingtonian, we’ve been dragged down the road by the Interstate 5/ Puget Sound Greens without any regard for the east side of the mountains. Washington’s minimum wage is $14.49, you pay 8 cents in a store for a plastic bag that is heavier than normal because regular plastic bags are illegal. Our gas tax is 49 cents a gallon, and the list goes on. We’re in a SAD state of affairs here!

    1. Unfortunately for you but fortunately for me, people who think like you are in the MINORITY, perhaps not on this forum, but in the general U.S. population. And Thank God for that, because your beliefs are way off-base and not even close to reality. Your comments are bizarre and delusional, like many others here on GM Authority.

  30. The earth is warming up because of people. Well and animals. Every person born puts off 98.6 degrees. Eventually the temp on the earth will be at least 98.6..because even if we stopped every machine on the planet every person is still putting off heat.

    1. This is low IQ SJW nonsense. The Earth has been warming and cooling over a long time, irregardless of humans.
However, there is a natural level in any environment.
More humans means more competition for limited resources…
