Refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss LT: First Real-World Pictures

General Motors unveiled the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 last September, and with it, a long list of changes and updates for the popular light duty pickup. At this point, we’ve seen all 2022 Silverado 1500 models in real life except for one – the Trail Boss LT. Luckily, we managed to catch up to the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss LT as it was undergoing some kind of testing, and are now taking our first look at it via these real-world pictures.

This particular example was spotted plying the roadways in an eye-catching shade of red paint dubbed Cherry Red Tintcoat. Before we go any further, we should note that this particular prototype is not wearing the production-intent front clip. In other words, it’s wearing a black-painted front fascia, whereas production models will actually wear a body-color one.

Beyond the actual front fascia, the 2022 Chevy Silverado LT Trail Boss does feature a High Gloss bumper as standard, complemented by a Black grille Bow Tie badge and red recovery hooks. The lighting spec includes LED reflector headlamps with LED signature Daytime Running Lamps and Amber tracer animation, as well as LED front fog lamps.

Moving to the sides, this particular refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss LT rolls on a set of 20-inch High gloss Black painted aluminum wheels (RPO code RD5) with LT265/60R20 Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires (RPO code QFV), an optional upgrade. Standard spec includes 18-inch High gloss Black painted aluminum wheels (RPO code RD1) with LT275/65R18C Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac MT tires (RPO code R3O).

Further optional upgrades include body-color door handles, which replace the standard Gloss Black door handles. There’s also a set of optional outside power-adjustable, manual folding/extending vertical trailering mirrors with heated upper glass, lower convex mirrors, integrated turn signals, clearance lamps and auxiliary lighting (RPO code DPO).

Finally, we have the rear of the Silverado Trail Boss, which matches the LED-studded front end with LED tail lights. The tail lights include a lighting signature, lighting animation, and incandescent reverse lights. Lower in the rear fascia, the 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss LT features a High Gloss rear bumper as standard, while this example is also equipped with the optional Multi-Flex Tailgate (QK2) with multiple positions for enhanced usability and utility.

As a reminder, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado is available with four engine options, including the turbo 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, now uprated to a maximum of 430 pound-feet of torque, plus the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax.

Under the body panels is the GM T1 platform, while production takes place at the GM Silao Plant in Mexico, the GM Fort Wayne Assembly facility in Indiana, and the GM Oshawa Plant in Canada.

  1. You gotta love that ugly front fender were it cuts offs and turns to a half black and half red fender , sort of like they would do on a cheap Hyundia, or Kia , yet its GM bean counters doing this cheap looking crap. door mount mirrors are special looking too. looks like a custom work truck, I wonder how many chips the front end will have in a few years.

      1. In the era of the Pontiac Aztec, Bob Lutz exclaimed that too much cladding is like excess much make-up on a woman. There’s a point at which it becomes repulsive. I agree with Shockandawe that the hood seems overly complicated, detracts from the looks, and doesn’t really appeal to me personally. Opinions will differ of course. Style aside, the greying effect of the Avalanche bed accents come to mind. I’d personally prefer to see a strong hood line theme carried over from the 2002 Silverado HD. There’s so much talent at GM, my motivation to comment is driven from the fact that I really think they can do better.

    2. Good old mickey, had you bothered reading the article or done any previous research you would’ve realized that the fender you are complaining about will be painted on production models. And once again you complain about something not being painted and then turn around and complain about paint chips? You do realize that both Ford and Ram also have painted front bumpers (depending on model) just like GM right?

      1. Truckz ,
crome bumpers dont chip, and still look new the day you trade them or 5 years later, my 22 king ranch has chrome, my 21 Ram 3500 has chrome, my 19 denali has garbage paint and has 12 chips and the truck has 12 K miles. I know what I’m talking about, and Truckz i’m glad you like reading my comments. A lot of people dont like all the cheap crap on GM trucks, cheap thin seats, blown plastic interiors for the last 10 years.

        1. Painted front bumpers are standard on the King Ranch and the majority of what you see. They can be ordered chrome but it’s not standard equipment, your truck was clearly optioned with chrome. Painted bumpers are also very common on Rams depending on model and how they are ordered. Yes the Denali has standard painted bumpers. If you want chrome on your Denali I’m sure someone would be happy to trade you for their SLT bumpers.

As far as plastic interiors they are all guilty of using way too much. GM clearly needed to step up and did with the refresh. The refreshed interiors are very competitive with Ram and IMO a step ahead of Ford. I’m not a GM apologist and often call them out when needed. Do I think they are perfect? Absolutely not. Do I think Ford and Ram are perfect? Absolutely not. The perfect truck does not exist.

yea I agree with you there , none are perfect , I own all 3 , I know the pros and cons of them all.
yes I ordered with chrome package on Ford. I ordered my Laramie to get chrome bumpers. the denali chips all to hell. the interior on denali sucks ass, cheap thin seats , little tinny tiny knobs on dash, blown garbage plastic dash with door panels and cubbys that dont work. the running boards on a gm truck are the same on a 1500 and is a 2500 , and the mounting brackets are the same, its stupid . you say the new interior is updated , they put a car dash in the truck like a female in an suv, the nev screen is to low unlike Ram and Ford that mount them higher , door handles on a GM are junk and break, the tail gate handles are cheap crap. my under powered duramax just got a hush hush recall on injectors if they go bad , new fake allison transmission is branded , door mounted mirrors are stupid, the denali does ride good cause of the front end. Ram flip up mirros suck, but that 1075lb torque Aisin cummins will yank any thing you put behind it down the road all day long. the interiors are top of the line. Ram use to be the recall king of trucks, GM has surpassed them. Ford , they sell millions for a reason , the sit well, comfortable, there fast, they pull great, many options two tone paint, many packages, michelin tires instead of junk good for a year tires, and once again all the GM unfinsihed plastic all over the exterior of truck including wheel lip moldings, bumper steps, cab steps, bed steps, hood plastic, ect. you take the high country or denali name plate off the door and they look like cheap work trucks, there is no wow factor in a gm truck any more and 50 % of the people agree. i use to really like GM, but there cheap cost cutting has pissed me off. Truckz is was good talking with you.

            1. Having spent a lot of time in all 3 HD’s in a work environment I can safely say you are being overly dramatic in your GM assessment. They all have failures but the GM’s in the fleets at work had the least. We will also agree to disagree about the refreshed interiors. The Duramax is due for and soon getting a power bump, but they still have more than sufficient power to get the job done.

              1. The 19 GM interiors do suck though, a step back from the 18s on quality.

The 18s were decent. Not outstanding, but decent.

I will say there is not much difference in quality between a lowly LT and a High Country, where the Ram and Ford it can be a very large difference, especially Ram. GM interiors are very competitive in the LT level trucks. Step up to Denalis and High Country’s and they’re a joke.

  5. The price to fill up this pretty truck would be a love-hate relationship at the pump. Over 100.

You dont buy a pretty truck to sit in the driveway 4 days out of 7.

I use mine just about everyday and it’s kicking my wallets ash…

Pretty soon, I will admire it sitting in my driveway… but I will NOT buy an EV to make this WH happy. They can kiss my ash. When I’m ready to buy an EV, then I will buy one, not when they want me too.

I would like to up grade with this years models like the one pictured but the price and price of gas is is a stopper for me. Going wait…

I tried putting a 45 degree angle on the masking tape….”Whaaaa-laa!” (I wonder what it will look like in the mornin?) I can’t say that I like it…

  7. Crew cab only. What a shame. Comically large cab ruins the look. A double cab, which has plenty of room, would make this truck look really mean. Instead it looks really bloated.

    Reply
    1. If you want a double cab, order it. With limited allocation, dealers don’t want to stock something with very limited appeal.

      Reply
      1. One thing I hate about the extended cab is the door handle position looks out of place. The should hide the rear doorhandles like Toyota to make it look more sleek.

This article is about the new trail boss refresh. Just because someone says they don’t like the way this looks doesn’t make them a hater. I have never met a single person who likes every single thing a company puts out, no matter if it’s ford, gm, ram, even Ferrari.

  10. The Black on the Front Fender only happens when an SEO paint color is ordered (like wheatland yellow or tangier orange). It does not happen on RPO paints. I built an Orange 2020 TrailBoss 6.2 for our store and was disappointed to see the black in the fender. Cool truck otherwise. Very unique.

    1. In this case, the black front clip happened because this isn’t a production model but rather a validation unit.

  12. I have the LTD earlier version of this truck; 2022 Trail Boss LT and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! My Silverado has a Sunroof, and the other difference outside is that I changed the Trail Boss sticker, as I believe the white trim doesn’t match the trucks color, I found a sticker set online that was not trimmed in white.
My only complaint/concern would be the Black painted front grill and bumper. The 2015 Silverado LT I traded in was Burgandy body and all chrome up front, after 6 years and 200,000 miles, I had no chips. My brand new 2022 Silverado after a couple of weeks already has several chips on the Black Grill and Bumper, and I only have 6,000 miles on it so far. As a traveling salesperson who puts on many highway miles, I expect in 6 years the front end is going to look a mess unless I have it repainted along the way, I am not sure how the paint warranty works, but I am guessing I am going to need it. Please know… I am still glad I purchased this truck, and I would do it again.

  17. Change of heart. After reading Mickey’s comments yesterday morning, I paid more attention to the chips on the front of my Trail Boss while washing it after work. It turns out I have about 20 chips on the front of my brand-new truck, I would hope GM/Chevy would think this is an unacceptable number after a very short period of ownership (6,478 miles). I will probably never buy a painted front bumper truck again.
Hopefully Chevrolet would be willing to trade my truck back for a comparable truck with all chrome up front. I know things don’t work that way, but sure would be nice if they did. I think I am going to try and trade out this weekend before much value is lost on a bruised looking truck.
