General Motors may be developing a more hardcore, off-road-focused take on the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X, with GM Authority spy photographers capturing a curious AT4X-based prototype testing on public roads near the GM Milford Proving Ground this week.
This GMC Sierra AT4X-based prototype has a different front bumper than the production model that debuted last year, featuring a different underbody skid plate and a simpler, more rugged-looking front bumper that provides superior clearance and improved approach and departure angles. This vehicle was spied testing alongside a similarly-equipped Chevy Silverado ZR2 based prototype, suggesting the automaker is working on more extreme, next-level versions of both the AT4X and ZR2 to appeal to performance and off-roading enthusiasts.
As many readers will know, the GMC Sierra AT4X features GM’s naturally aspirated 6.2L L87 V8 engine, which puts out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This prototype may feature an upgraded powerplant, such as GM’s supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8, however our spy photographers say this sighting did not yield any audible proof that a forced induction motor was under the hood. Using this engine would make sense, though, given Ram’s success with the 702 horsepower TRX and the fact that Ford is already developing a rival to the TRX in the way of the supercharged F-150 Raptor R.
Assuming a next-level GMC Sierra AT4X is indeed in the works, such a model would also feature upgraded suspension components, different off-road wheels and tires and potentially different drive modes and other features to help boost its overall capability.
We can’t wait to learn more about what GM’s truck division has in store with this future potential GMC Sierra AT4X model variant. We’ll be first to report on any new information, as usual, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more GMC Sierra news, GMC news and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

Exhaust pipes look small on it.
I’m going to keep repeating myself in hopes someone at GM sees it.
Give it the baby duramax. With $6/$7 gas coming I don’t want to spend $160 to fill up and only get 17 mpg.
Maybe buy what you need and use and you won’t have to worry about the fill ups. You aren’t in the 2% of buyers that actually use any of the capabilities and based on your exhaust comment you probably have no use for a truck. If gas is a concern a 90k truck probably isn’t in your budget…
You must know me so well. The exhaust comment was an observation. Usually supercharged motors have bigger exhaust. You have no idea what I use my truck for and it’s none of your business. Just because a $90k truck is in my budget doesn’t mean I want to spend $$$ at the pump every week. Is it a crime to want 460tq at 1500rpm and 24mpg?
$90k to look cool and not want to pay at the pump
Do they ever make any for sale or just prototypes and take reservations?
I agree completely…….let’s get the trucks we already know about out there, before worrying about another off road overpriced monster that will probably appeal to a huge number of potential buyers, and actually sell to a very small number.
Are there really that many out there that want or can afford a professional grade gully basher???
Not sure where you live but out West you see Raptors and TRX’s all over the place, so yes there is a market. That said, I do agree they need to get the already announced refreshed models rolling off the line.
Why did they delete Camping mirrors ?
2022 Silverado configurator is online. Looks to be about a $2000 year over year price increase.
How about building my custom trail boss and quit putting Denali and high country in front of it I’m so disgusted hearing people who ordered a month after me and have a production date already Gm worries more about high dollar trucks and Cadillacs than the guy who just wants his truck I regret ever placing the order
@Kerry you may need to try another dealer
Why are you even on this site then?
It’s America people can go to whatever website they want. You should go to china if you wanna restrict what people can visit in the internet you communist.
You know there are plenty of decaffeinated brands that taste pretty good. You should try them out. LOL
You know there are plenty of countries you can go to where they control what websites you can go to. You would fit much better in a country like that so you can dictate who can visit what website.
Supercharger….that’s all it needs….
