The GM Authority Take

The abysmal GMC Terrain sales performance during Q4 2021 is directly attributable to a lack of production. In fact, no 2022 GMC Terrain units were built between June and November 2021. The circumstance left very few units of the compact crossover available on dealer lots. Obviously, GMC can’t sell what it doesn’t have.

Moreover the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage has disrupted production of the 2022 GMC Terrain on multiple occasions, impacting both available inventory and sales.

However, production of the 2022 GMC Terrain AT4 and Denali finally commenced in January at the GM San Luis Potosi plant, per GM’s tiered rollout for the refreshed crossover.

The Terrain received a refresh for the 2022 model year consisting of new front and rear fascias, along with several minor updates to the cabin and a new trim level in the form of the Terrain AT4, a new off-road-flavored trim that will be offered exclusively with AWD. The refreshed Terrain was initially planned and announced for the 2021 model year, but difficulties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the model to the 2022 model year.

With the Terrain now back in production, we expect inventory to improve, and gains in sales to follow shortly thereafter. But that expectation is tempered knowing that GMC’s offering still faces major competitive pressure, with the latest being rivals challenging the Terrain AT4, namely the 2023 Kia Sportage X-Pro and 2023 Mazda CX-50.

  3. I don’t think it’s as much a lack of production problem as it is a sort of an ugliness factor. gmC really dropped the ball on their design choices IMO.
