General Motors has just presented the new 2023 Chevy Onix line in Brazil, previewing the new features to be introduced by the next model year of the best-selling vehicle in the country and throughout Latin America. The automaker put the 2023 Onix on display at this year’s edition of the Lollapalooza music festival, highly popular among the Brazilian public.
The 2023 Chevy Onix will arrive in Brazil in the coming weeks with notable new finishes and improved features, seeking to reinforce its appeal as the car of choice for customers in the Brazilian market. The Onix hatchback has a strong connection and is an icon of the Lollapalooza festival for being a vehicle focused on young consumers committed to connectivity, innovation and trendsetting, and for the first time, the Onix Plus sedan hit the stage at the event as well.
“It’s the first time that we have the opportunity to show the entire new Onix family at LollaBR. We want to bring experiences so that the public can go beyond the expectation of this iconic festival and enjoy the opportunity to be in an environment that exalts music and pop culture,” said Executive Marketing Director at GM South America, Hermann Mahnke, in a statement. “Chevrolet wants to provide memorable moments, from the Onix Stage, to the special events at our booth, Onix Parking and Lolla Lounge,” he added.
Notably, new features for the 2023 Chevy Onix include minor cosmetic changes, in addition to new 16-inch alloy wheels with black pockets and a machined surface for the top-of-the-line Premier trim, along with larger 16-inch wheels for the Onix LTZ. Additionally, all 2023 model-year trims will receive mechanical upgrades introduced earlier this year, which improve driveability while reducing emissions.
This early, first-quarter introduction of the 2023 Chevy Onix represents a significant change in the launch patterns of GM Brazil, which traditionally introduces a new model year during the second half of the previous calendar year. In addition, it occurred a few days after the one-month stoppage of the GM Gravataà plant, which exclusively manufactures the two body versions of the popular subcompact car to supply the country and the entire region, was completed.
The new 2023 Chevy Onix lineup is expected to be officially launched in Brazil in the coming weeks, when GM’s Brazilian affiliate is due to reveal all the details and images of the updated vehicle. It’s worth noting that Chevrolet became the main sponsor of the Lollapalooza Brasil festival in 2014 and since then, it has presented some important novelties related to the Chevy Onix in each edition of the event.

This car really should be sold in the US, it makes much more sense to bring it here from Brazil than it does to ship compact cars from Korea. I don’t think the GM understand that there still are regular people out there that just need a basic affordable OK looking gas powered car, not everyone is a nonbinary amputee surfing enthusiast ready to plop down $80K for an electric Silverado…….
Onyx is a model for emerging markets. For its commercialization in the USA, investments would be necessary to adapt the platform to strict security standards, increasing its cost. In addition, the US does not have a free trade agreement with Brazil, as it does with South Korea, which would further raise its final price.
We are an emerging market….if were going to import the 3rd world here, we might as well have cars for them too…..and we should have trade agreements with countries on this side of the world. Can someone get the former VP’s son a job with a Brazilian gas company? Maybe that would help?
Oh well, I guess we’ll need to figure out how to afford $60,000 electric CUV’s or I guess take the bus….
It really doesn’t seem like GM is in the car business anymore does it…..
Whereas the US has a reciprocal free trade agreement with South Korea, Brazil is one of the most closed markets. They have heavy tariffs on imports of goods, including cars, cell phones and computers. You don’t want to reward them with American dollars.
Also, Brazilian engines are different, they sell no fuel with ethanol below E27, and must support up to E100.
The free trade agreement is beneficial when both countries are able to compete with each other, which is not the case for Brazil in the automotive sector, hence the imposition of import tariffs.
Lets stick with China then, they seem like a fun bunch……maybe we can get a trade deal with North Korea too….
Nice car. The sedan is up to 42 mpg highway. GM would move many of them when gas price is high.
I’d go for the Monza/Cavalier Turbo to be offered here, the t3 have more power then the base Civic, the h.o. t3 have in the Chinese GS Verano nearly as much power as the SI.
This would make a great addition to the NA market.
Mr R, you are dead on.
The rest of the participants, please acknowledge that GM SLP plant in Mexico builds the Onix so the “trade penalty” would be out of the equation. The engines that the Mexico built Onix has are E10 and are built at the GM Ramos Engine plant (1.0L Turbo and 1.2L Turbo). All of the Mexico marketed Onix have 6 airbags, traction control, EBD, and other safety arrangements. However MH is correct, there are several items that need to be upgraded (sometimes fully redesigned) to make it compliant to the US standards. But the starting vehicle i would say is there.
I have rented a Onix twice while business travel in Mexico and the car really goes with the 1.0L turbo. And surprisingly even the base rental model has a 8″ screen, electronic air conditioning , rear charging USB ports, cruise control, remote (push button) trunk opener, remote fuel door opener (in good need now that thieves try to steal gasoline being expensive), and believe me a huge trunk space.
Basic affordable transportation. And gee, look at the price in the GM Mexico website. Starting at $14K with all the above except that is a manual stick shift transmission.
And yes, it is evident that the sedans, for GM, are a thing of the past. You want a new car going forward is simple: Put down $35K for a Electric Emerging market CUV.
People should look past the trade agreement that’s the reason why gm and others WON’T sells cars in America its because most buyers want a truck, not a car But not everyone wants a truck, like me,Not because I loan mom the money just to bring home a new gmc jimmy home it’s because the cost of being able to afford the price when it comes with ownership that makes the difference.
The way gm(and others)NOW sells nothing more but trucks, looks like they become the new Mack Truck for the average consumer.
