GM Hit With Class Action Lawsuit For Peeling Paint On Chevy And GMC Trucks

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against GM by certain owners of the automaker’s 2015 to 2019 model year full-size truck and SUV models over peeling exterior paint.
Plaintiffs in this class-action suit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, say the exterior paint on affected vehicles is prone to delaminating, peeling, bubbling, flaking and/or blistering, according to Car Complaints. They also allege the paint peels and delaminates without any external or environmental influence, as the paint and clear coat were are not able to bond properly due to their opposing chemical properties.
Plaintiffs say this problem has lessened the second-hand value of affected vehicles and that a repaint will not suffice, as hand-painted vehicles often do not have the same consistent finish as ones painted in the factory by a robot. They also say GM was aware of the paint defects and “failed to provide truthful information,” regarding the paint’s condition to customers. The lawsuit calls for GM to repurchase affected vehicles at full cost, reimburse lessees based on how much they’re paid toward their leases and to recall all vehicles with defective paint.
Interestingly, the class action complaint itself contains a reference to an online complaint that was submitted to CarComplaints.com by the owner of a 2015 model year Chevy Tahoe. This individual says the topcoat on the hood and roof of their Tahoe “started to fade/grey and crack on the black undercoat,” after three years of ownership. The GM dealership they took the vehicle to quoted them $2,300 to have the hood repainted. This person says they expected the paint to “last well into a decade,” and that this happened despite the fact they wash their vehicle weekly and get it detailed professionally every six months.
The following GM vehicles are involved in the suit:
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon XL
- 2015-2019 GMC Sierra
This class-action lawsuit was filed by Florida GM customers Tom Riley, Heather Shrum and Gary Ambrose, along with Tennessee GM customer Sherry Kilburn. We’ll provide more information on the suit as it becomes available.

Same thing here…2015 GMC Sierra 1500…pint is peeling all over; roof of the csb, doors, side panels…looks embarrassing.. how do we get in on the class action lawsuit?
How do I get added to this suit I’m in SD my vehicle is a 2018 tahoe and it’s from the Texas plant. Chevy doesn’t seem to care either imo they keep passing the buck.
Does anyone have more information on the lawsuit? My 2018 clearcoat is pealing all over the place.
This is the same thing mine is doing
My 2005 trailblazer has had repairs to the passenger side quarter panel and rear passenger door, hood and rear door. All areas are peeling the top coat. All repairs were done at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased and they say they will not stand behind the paint job unless I can provide the original paperwork.
Hi everyone, first of all thank you so much to the author for this article. Does anyone know if there have been any updates to the lawsuit or who we can contact for this? The hood and top of my 2017 Yukon has completely deteriorated in regard to the paint. It’s an eyesore, I contacted GM and they said due to my mileage being outside to 36,000 miles, they can only contribute a limited amount and offered 10% of the paint job or $190. What a joke I’m infuriated. If anyone has any contacts on how I can advocate for attention to this disservice, I’d appreciate it.
I have a 2016 Chevy Trax and of course, the same issues. Around the entire front and rear windshields. Front and back quarter panels. A big bubbling, flaking mess.
2017 Sierra 2500 truck extended cab – Black 45,000 miles
Paint started bubbling and now also chipping on rear driver door. How do I get GM to cover the repair? Wait until law suit is resolved? How do i join the class action lawsuit? What is this door is repaired and then more areas start bubbling and chipping?
not related to this but transmission failed in 1st year at 11,000 miles and was replaced when it could not be fixed by the dealer.
I have always bought GM trucks but getting aggravated with the quality.

Hi Richard, I know if you take it to your local gmc dealership they’ll submit a claim but gmc will only pay fraction of the cost for this issue if your vehicle is over 36,000 miles. I’d also like to join the lawsuit. Not sure how to get ahold of the author or anyone else.
Richard, I contacted my local dealership and they submitted ticket to GMC. Since your
much closer to 36k than me they might pay a significant portion of the repair. Worth a shot to see? I’m about 35k over and they’d pay 10% of paint repair, for me that’s nothing but I’m sure percentage would be much larger for you.
Good luck!
My 2013 gmc sierra 1500 only has 118k kms and I have the issue with the paint peeling off above the windshield. How do I join this class action lawsuit?
My 2015 GMC Denali paint is peeling on the side of my truck. Is there a recall or something that can be done to fix it?
My 2016 White GMC Sierra 2500 HD has paint peeling on the bottom right drivers rear door window area. Isee the same issue on most of the white Chevy/GMC trucks.
Yes my 2015 Chevy Silverado crew cab is doing the same thing.
Gm doesn’t care guys…2018 tahoe owner here they don’t care! This lawsuit won’t go anywhere imo
My 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 has paint peeling off the upper back sill of the back seat windows. It’s just bubbling and peeling off. There is no adherence to the primer! My truck looks brand new inside and out and this is devastating to me and will also devalue my truck.
My 2019 Equinox started to bubble on the hood and I called GM complaint line. The lady I spoke with said there is nothing they can do unless it goes completely through the hood within 7 years which is the warranty on paint. She gave me a 100.00 voucher for any service I would need on the vehicle, bid deal.
2016 suburban has been doing the same thing. Scratches and dull on the hood and roof. No matter what I try to use to make it look better, doesn’t work. Looks like trash. I had a Honda for 12 years and it never did that.
I was told today that my 2018 Duramax Sierra All Terrain bumper peeling and bubbling was due to “environmental circumstances” that are out of the control of GM. It’s criminal that I have to pay for their defect. GM case # 4-30904804926
***Lawsuit Update***
I just called the Maher Law Firm in FL to see if there is any update on the lawsuit. Unfortunately there is no update as of now as the case is not scheduled to hit the courts until the end of July. I also asked about the procedure if I were to trade my Tahoe in (and lose my ass doing so), she said I’d no longer be part of the lawsuit, and whoever the owner is would be part as long as they have registered. So basically I’m stuck driving a POS until this thing gets resolved.
In the meantime, if anyone else has the paint issues on the vehicles listed in the class action, but HAS NOT registered with the suit, make sure YOU REGISTER WITH THEM. Call the Maher Law Firm on 407-839-0866, they are really helpful.
My 2015 gmc yukon hood and roof complete top clear coat gone…no shine just matte look….it looks terrible
2015 GMC Sierra paint is peeling.
I have a 2014 High Country I bought new. Always clean and detailed. Silver. Paint is peeling in sheets. How do I join the lawsuit?
