GM Hit With Class Action Lawsuit For Peeling Paint On Chevy And GMC Trucks

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against GM by certain owners of the automaker’s 2015 to 2019 model year full-size truck and SUV models over peeling exterior paint.
Plaintiffs in this class-action suit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, say the exterior paint on affected vehicles is prone to delaminating, peeling, bubbling, flaking and/or blistering, according to Car Complaints. They also allege the paint peels and delaminates without any external or environmental influence, as the paint and clear coat were are not able to bond properly due to their opposing chemical properties.
Plaintiffs say this problem has lessened the second-hand value of affected vehicles and that a repaint will not suffice, as hand-painted vehicles often do not have the same consistent finish as ones painted in the factory by a robot. They also say GM was aware of the paint defects and “failed to provide truthful information,” regarding the paint’s condition to customers. The lawsuit calls for GM to repurchase affected vehicles at full cost, reimburse lessees based on how much they’re paid toward their leases and to recall all vehicles with defective paint.
Interestingly, the class action complaint itself contains a reference to an online complaint that was submitted to CarComplaints.com by the owner of a 2015 model year Chevy Tahoe. This individual says the topcoat on the hood and roof of their Tahoe “started to fade/grey and crack on the black undercoat,” after three years of ownership. The GM dealership they took the vehicle to quoted them $2,300 to have the hood repainted. This person says they expected the paint to “last well into a decade,” and that this happened despite the fact they wash their vehicle weekly and get it detailed professionally every six months.
The following GM vehicles are involved in the suit:
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon XL
- 2015-2019 GMC Sierra
This class-action lawsuit was filed by Florida GM customers Tom Riley, Heather Shrum and Gary Ambrose, along with Tennessee GM customer Sherry Kilburn. We’ll provide more information on the suit as it becomes available.

My 2015 Cadillac Escalade and 2018 GMC Sierra (just starting) both have paint issues. The dealer said, it is a “Manufacturer defect but out of warranty”. I paid to have the Escalade repainted. $$$. Now here we go again with the Sierra. Paint peeling up on the roof. SMH GM.
My low mileage GMC Yukon the hood and roof paint has deteriorated significantly over the past few must and I take very good care of this vehicle and this is my 2nd GMC Yukon in the past couple of years due to an accident that totaled my last one. This is very upsetting. I hope GMC makes this right
I wish it would get done with already my Silverado is getting worse as the months go by.
2015 gmc denali paint falling off on own
I also, do not understand why the 2014 Sierra, like I own, is not included in this lawsuit. i admit that I haven’t spent the time and effort that many have, involved i this suit. The 2014 year has the same exact problem, was painted by the same manufacturer as the models and years mentioned. i want to know how to get the year 2014 included. If you’re going to hold a company liable for their actions, why not cover every gm truck with the identical problem with the same exact paint and problem?
2010 Silverado has always been very well taken care of!!!! Paint bubble and chip on hood 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 trying to figure out if there is a recall on it. I have seen that some years have recall.. HELP PLEASE
My 2007 Yukon is also chipping and peeling – but I’m more upset about the OnStar Sunsetting my service. Why isn’t that a class action suit??? If there is one please send the link to join. When I bought my yukon new in 2007 nothing was ever mentioned about the possibility of losing OnStar service. There should be an upgrade option. I’ve been a subscribing customer for 15 years. 🤬
I got a 2015chevy silverado double cab with only 59000 miles on it and my to right side doors are bubbling from the inside out I got ahold of gm and they did not want to do anything about it
Same issues with my GMC 2015 Sierra. Paint started peeling slowly, now peeling in sheets … Local GMC dealer says not their responsibility. Called GMC and they won’t fix t he issue either…
I am literally washing the paint of my Silverado (2500 Duramax) with a garden hose… VERY INTERESTED IN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT! PLEASE CONTACT ME
My 2021 Chevy equinox has paint bubbling up in two different places on my trunk area.
2019 Equinox started to bubble on the hood.Called GM and got nowhere!
The paint on my Red 2008 Silverado 1500 started bubling at year 5 and has mostly peeled off by now. I tried calling the dealseship and all they would say is that it was no longer under warranty. back then I tried calling and writing GM over a 3 year period but eventually I got shot down but was offered a discount “coupon” off the price of a brand new truck, I kindly declined. Why would I buy a new truck and spend much more money for a vehicle with the same paint issues??? Why cant GM do the right thing and make good on all these bad paint jobs??
