GM Hit With Class Action Lawsuit For Peeling Paint On Chevy And GMC Trucks

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against GM by certain owners of the automaker’s 2015 to 2019 model year full-size truck and SUV models over peeling exterior paint.
Plaintiffs in this class-action suit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, say the exterior paint on affected vehicles is prone to delaminating, peeling, bubbling, flaking and/or blistering, according to Car Complaints. They also allege the paint peels and delaminates without any external or environmental influence, as the paint and clear coat were are not able to bond properly due to their opposing chemical properties.
Plaintiffs say this problem has lessened the second-hand value of affected vehicles and that a repaint will not suffice, as hand-painted vehicles often do not have the same consistent finish as ones painted in the factory by a robot. They also say GM was aware of the paint defects and “failed to provide truthful information,” regarding the paint’s condition to customers. The lawsuit calls for GM to repurchase affected vehicles at full cost, reimburse lessees based on how much they’re paid toward their leases and to recall all vehicles with defective paint.
Interestingly, the class action complaint itself contains a reference to an online complaint that was submitted to CarComplaints.com by the owner of a 2015 model year Chevy Tahoe. This individual says the topcoat on the hood and roof of their Tahoe “started to fade/grey and crack on the black undercoat,” after three years of ownership. The GM dealership they took the vehicle to quoted them $2,300 to have the hood repainted. This person says they expected the paint to “last well into a decade,” and that this happened despite the fact they wash their vehicle weekly and get it detailed professionally every six months.
The following GM vehicles are involved in the suit:
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon XL
- 2015-2019 GMC Sierra
This class-action lawsuit was filed by Florida GM customers Tom Riley, Heather Shrum and Gary Ambrose, along with Tennessee GM customer Sherry Kilburn. We’ll provide more information on the suit as it becomes available.

Meanwhile the paint on my 2002 GMC Sierra with 261,500 miles is still looking good with no peeling/fading.
That is highly relevant information. 20 year old truck built by old GM which is not even in business anymore
My 2016 Sierra 2500 tailgate looks like a Leopard and the top coat is peeling as well
I have a 2015 LT Chevy Sonic the top roof and front hood of the vehicle has no shine and rough to touch they called the dealer and told them I would have to pay 1500.00 the Company General Motors will pay 1500.00. Terrible
My 2016 Sonic roof is peeling in large flakes. The hood won’t be far behind. Under the flaking paint is surface rust spotting. So this issue goes beyond the trucks and SUVs.
How can someone join the lawsuit?
just don’t look underneath the car. My 2002 Avalanche has about rusted out including all the brake lines with only 110k miles. Paint was bubbling on the fenders and hood just out of warranty. GM uses crappy metal and it should be illegal to use a rustable material for brake lines.
Exactly same thing it bubbles
My 2018 sierra looks terrible and it started peeling within a year. All around the exterior I have paint missing
Paint on My 2014 Sierra is perfect and looks like the day I picked it up.
That’s crazy because I was embarassed by how much paint was missing all over my 2014 Sierra. Basically every forward facing surface had the paint peeling like it never bonded. I was shocked to see this suit didn’t include the 2014s.
My 2014 Sierra paint has peeled off all over my truck! From front to back, sides and on top. Crazy! Has only 79,000 miles. Does anyone know who to contact to complain and/or get this problem fixed?
My 2015 sierra 2500hd denali has paint peeling on top of the cab and back passenger door. What was the outcome of this lawsuit?
I have a 2014 Sierra with peeling paint on the roof. I went to the dealer to be told it is not covered because it is out of warranty. Just beyond 36 months.
My 2012 Silverado with 128,000 miles is peeling/flaking off too. Bad primer in my opinion. Wish there was a law suit I could join.
Peeling even behind the cab by the bed, and on the roof. Forward facing was first to go.
I have 2014 sierra 1500 Denali and on both passenger doors the white diamond coat paint from factory has peeled off big time between rear cab frame and narrow parts of door along window.
GM says it is cosmetic and would do nothing.
Same here….my 2015 gmc 1500 denali has chips on the A pillars and gm said cosmetic!
Mine did the same thing. I wrote numerous letters to GM president, vice president, dealership and 7-on your side (local tv station). After 3 months of non stop letters, the dealership called and set up appointment to fix it for no cost. This was two years ago, now I just noticed the other side by the window is doing the same thing. I will be sending out the letters again!!! Don’t give up, they need to fix this issue with no charge to the buyer.
Did you send letters weekly? For 3 months
I bought my 15 Chevy equinox in one state and moved to another a year later so …
Mine started with a bubble on the lift gate that eventually came off at the same time I had bubbling around both front wheel wells and inside the passenger door behind the driver
What color was your equinox or are all colors doing it. Heard white was the worst.
Please help me . I have a 2019 chev equinox the hood paint is bubbling rust spot, too =
My 2015 Chevy Equinox is White
Last GM vehicle I’ll ever buy
Well my 14 dually has peeled paint patchs all over the roof, and has fir 3 years now. Dealer said tough luck. Roof leaks around the roof marker lights as well.
And yet, my 2014 Sierra is flaking off the roof. I noticed it a few months after the warranty ran out.
Paint on my 2014 Silverado is blistering, peeling, all over. Was told repaint will cost $25,000
Crazy because I have had nothing but problems with my 2000 Tahoe and 2005 and 10 Yukons the roof and hood paint popped and I think water and air got in between metal and paint on every one it just flys off? Must of got lucky good for you
My 2010 Chevy express van paint is peeling and flaking off in large areas…hood. roof, doors… told that GM used wrong primer. It’s a common problem on the GM vans.
Sure wish GM could be held responsible
I woke up this morning and found a big area of paint chipping from my 2015 Trax . I was so proud of my vehicle. What the hell . This is just going to get worse with the cold weather approaching. What can I do to make GM fix it .
2017 Chevy Silverado. I bought it brand new and 1 of the door is peeling, driver quarter panel and the right fender.. my transmission went out in 3 years. I have changed the AC condenser. Windshield wiper motor went out. Changed radiator went out. I’m a Chevy dude but this one here is a lemon. I take care of my cares. But this one here is junk.
same. i have replaced the A/C, new ball joints, transfer case went, paint issues and now my transmission is having issues. how do i get involved in the class action law suit?
and…my warranty was up three months ago so i’ll be paying for my transmission out of my pocket…if anyone has any advice to help convince GM to pony up for the transmission let me know…
thanks!
I bought my 2017 high country and at 5,000 mi. The transmission start acting up and the dealer replaced the fluid with the correct fluid and said it was a mistake at the factory. Now at 60,000mi. it’s doing it again.
I need in on this, my 2016 Chevy Silverado LTZ is doing it on the rear wheel wells. It just starting
Well it’s cheap for a reason.
My 2016 Colorado did the same thing. Dealer told me it was from road stones, I said really? That why the paint is bubbling and peeling? I might of been born at night, but not last night!!
The dealer probably isn’t telling you a lie outright. However the road stones aren’t the cause of the paint peeling.
The road stones are the ‘catalyst’. The ’cause’ is that the clear coat and paint are not good enough to bond together once there is no longer a continuous seal between the two. This day and age, the painting products and technology are out there to withstand the abuse car can go through, but evidently GM didn’t feel the need to use them.
Man, Mary must spend a fortune on legal council. What is this like the 5th class action lawsuit in the last 5 years?
and anyone who buys GM, pays for the legal fees.
WTF! The paint on a vehicle THAT new should not be peeling!
Paint has been pealing on ever mfg vehicles for decades.
My Cougar pealed in sheets.
The real BS here is hand painted may not be as good. Well if it is not better you chose the wrong body shop.
Peeling paint was predominately in a bygone era when OEMs tried to save a buck with the all in one paint. Few models have had early paint peeling issues in the past 15 years. It is a not a common problem now and shows GM is cutting corners.
Crazy because I have had nothing but problems with my 2000 Tahoe and 2005 and 10 Yukons the roof and hood paint popped and I think water and air got in between metal and paint on every one it just flys off I agree decades.
My 2003 Silverado SS looked like crap in 2016 when I uploaded it.
My 2003 Silverado SS looked like crap in 2016 when I unloaded it.
I knew not to buy a Chevy. But no I just had to have that pretty blue Chevy Trax now it is shedding its paint.
Mine too, same year, brilliant blue. The class action suit does not yet include the Trax, but if enough of us contact the law firm, that will change! If you call them, they will tell you that, and they will add you to their data base. There are MANY of us out there, we all just need to contact the firm handling the suit:
(407) 839-0866
It was a quick phone call, and I got a live person!
I have an ‘05 Suburban with 190,000 miles and it still looks mighty fine. Plus, it’s black and the paint is all original. I turn down at least one offer, every month. I turned down $12,500 last month. I know, I’m an idiot but I can’t replace it in this market.
I love my 05 Yukon but my paint has been a problem
Paint peeling on my 2015 silverado
My 2002 Honda Civic paint fades
Trust Marry Barra she will get a handle on this .
My 2014 Silverado does this also.
I have 2017 Chevy Traverse with red tin coat paint that is flaking off hood can you help us
Yeah. Trade that pile of junk in.
My 2014 GMC Sierra does this also. I approached the dealership about this and the reason I was given was rock chips. Rocks are chipping the paint on both rear door pillars in exactly the same spot….not likely. This suit should be extended to 2014 vehicles as well.
Hello, My 2015 sierra, Triple white pearl flaking of rear doors , A pillars , starting on roof.. Dont even think about pressure washing these vehicles. It will be a gray mess when done. Ps, Always hand washed and detailed weekly.. A huge let down.
Equinox should be involved in this too! I have read literally hundreds of paint chipping reviews about the 2008-2016 model, all of which say GM won’t do anything. I bought my 2015 Equinox in January 2021. Only 1 previous owner. No accidents, clean CarFax, approx 36k miles on it. A few months ago I was driving down the road and noticed in my rear view mirror it looked like big chunks of confetti flying behind me. It was my car; over the last few months it has progressively gotten worse and is now missing most the paint on the top of the car and the hood. Even worse, rust set in very fast all though I keep it in my garage when not driving it. I bought it for roughly $16k, putting 9k down and financing the remaining 7k.
I have not contacted Chevy bc I dont want to get even more upset about the issue. And with so many complaints, why is Equinox not included in this class action suit but all these others are?! Absolutely ridiculous!!!!
As a retired gm engineer, i would suspect the environmentally friendly paint which is now water based.
There is no molecular bonding.
It is a shame the manufactures won’t own up to the problem which goes far back in time. It seems the paint industry would have corrected this issue by now.
How do you join this lawsuit?
Id like to know as well. My 2014 Sierra has the same issue.
I have a 2019 silverado custom 1500 and the paint on the front of the hood and the lower front fender has specs of chipped paint all across the front, it looks like someone has thrown hundreds of little rocks at it, but no where else has any issues
Same thing same issues since 2000 there just great trucks though other than paint
Someone on this thread of complaints about all our bubbling and chopping paint problems stated the wrote letters to the president and VP of GMC for 3 months
Also contacted their local news and local Chevy dealer.
Maybe we should all do that since all I see are posts but no answers
I notified the dealership where I purchased my brand new 2014 GMC Sierra in 2018 that the paint was peeling on my truck. They gave me the run-around and never repainted my vehicle. I contacted the Better Business Bureau, GMC Corporate and still received no satisfaction. I did my research online and discovered peeling paint is a common problem with GMC ‘s white vehicles manufactured in Mexico.
I would love to see quality stats based on manufacturing plant. My bet is a lot of quality issues from Mexico.
My 2016 Colorado did the same thing. Dealer told me it was from road stones, I said really? That why the paint is bubbling and peeling? I might of been born at night, but not last night!!
Our 2015 Silverado has peeling paint in the side panel and all over in the bed. Chevy dealorship wants $1,300.00 to fix the 8×10 area not including the bed.
I see these vehicles all over the place with this issue.
Never again would we purchase another chevy product.
Wow, interesting the company that I work for has a 2007 6500 and 2007 GMC van both in white, both peeling like crazy. I thought that it was because of age.
So basically we have to get it painted ourselves little man always get the shaft, mine also white but built in Texas.
I was quoted 22,000 and 25,000 dollars to repaint the 2014 truck. Holy Guacamole.
2017 GMC Silverado looks like a giraffe. Paint falling off everywhere. Dealer says stone chips. That’s not the case
Just had the hood painted on my 2018 Silverado …because the paint had rust coming through the paint…..truck only has 14 k miles on it and has been garage kept
My 2012 2500 Silverado is peeling terribly, it’s white and the paint is coming off everywhere with only 105000 miles on it.
My 2012 Silverado with 128,000 miles is peeling/flaking off too. Bad primer in my opinion. Paints not sticking to it. At first I thought it was a problem with the White Diamond paint but it sounds like all colors are having problems. Wish there was a law suit I could join.
My 2014 Buick Verano started fading in 2018 and now the hood and the top is completely faded. I mentioned to dealer when I saw it started to fade but they couldn’t do anything about it so I drive around with an ugly car now, the inside of the car still looks new, but the outside is ugly. Who can I contact in corporate. I feel they should paint my car and compensate me for my worries!!!
I work for a GM dealer you guys get corrosion warranty that will cover most of these items listed. during the covered period but vehicles do get hit on the highways we call them stone chips they do eventually bubble and cause the same Condition No I do stand with most customers customers as far as imperfection in the paint which which is warrantable but definitely not good for GM it is a problem.
I know the feeling I’m driving a 2015 LT Chevy Sonic I wish I never bought from Terry Labonte in Greensboro NC the front hood of my car and the roof has no shine at all with on 40,000 miles on it, a police told me it’s bad paint don’t buy a car from GM get a Lawyer😡
We have a 2015 GMC Sierra purchased used with 70,000km in 2018. Approx 1 year later we noticed paint bubbling at the passenger rear door which has now a significant area down to bare metal, now paint flaking off driver/passenger doors near mud flaps, paint flaking off on roof/windshield.
What a eye sore and disappointing factory defect!
My 2015 Silverado crew cab is doing the same thing, mine is Summit White color
Mine too
2015 equinox
Mine started on the liftgate then around the wheel wells of driver and passenger and inside the passenger door behind the driver
I don’t know if anything will happen for all the issues these vehicles have
I love my SUV but I’ll never buy another Chevy
The pearl white colour
Frustrating when they knew it was a defect but continued to produce vehicles where the customer now has to pay thousands of dollars for a full vehicle paint job.
I guess GM didn’t learn from their last paint fiasco in the late 80s to 90s with the white paint that would peel while driving 🤣
My 1990 white Sierra had peeling paint from hood and roof. My white 2014 silverado is ok so far.
My 2014 silver Silverado is peeling “all over”
We should be added to the lawsuit
gm is infamous for having the worst paint in the industry.
It complements the cheap plastic interiors well.
I have a 2016 CT6 Cadillac that has streaks on the hood and faded paint on top. The hood looks like silk.
We have a 2017 suburban and our paint look really bad on the hood and roof we had it detailed and the guy called us out and asked if it was in an accident we said no why? He then told us that this hood don’t match up with the rest of the car we asked what do you mean he has a device that measure’s the paint and it was way over the thickness of the doors quarter panels and back hatch also the roof didn’t match either he then told us to take it to the dealership and tell them to replace or repaint the hood and the roof which I did they told us we would have to take it up with GM consumer protection people I asked for the number and it’s just a person at the dealership like a customer service manager and they decided weather it would be approved for repairs guess what it was denied I want in on the lawsuit….
How do we add 2014 to this lawsuit
My 2015 has been peeling all over since the first year I bought ii.
I have a black 2008 yukon gmc I purchased new. Have taken very good care of the vehicle, however the roof, sides of hood and other areas on vehicle are peeling, bubbling and look awful! GMC owes me a paint job!
Our 2014 Silverado as well! Doors and the top of the cab “erupted” and peeled down the center. All paint shops say it needs a complete strip and repaint. GM refused to help.
2015 Chevy equinox , bubbling paint,
My 2019 Equinox bubbling on the hood and the clear coat is peeling.
My 017 Arcadia is peeling on left side a back hatch look bad need to talk to someone
