GM has announced that it will hire hundreds of new employees for positions at the GM Information Technology Innovation Center located in Chandler, Arizona.
Per a recent report from Chamber Business News, the openings include software positions to expand the existing workforce of more than 1,000 employees at the GM Information Technology Innovation Center.
“These jobs created by GM are high-wage, high-skill and provide tremendous employment opportunities for our residents,” said Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke. “We appreciate GM’s significant investment in Chandler and look forward to being a partner in their continued growth.”
The GM Information Technology Innovation Center is located in the Chandler Price Corridor, and spans some 170,000 square feet. Employees at the facility work in the fields of software development, data analysis, product management, and other digital technology jobs. The facility is one of four GM technology hubs across the U.S.
Notably, GM’s autonomous vehicle division, Cruise, recently announced that it is expanding an existing AV delivery pilot program with Walmart. Cruise currently operates a small fleet of self-driving Chevy Bolt EVs in Arizona that provide deliveries to customers. At present, the program is available through just a single Walmart location near Scottsdale, but the recently announced expansion is slated to grow the program to a total of eight Walmart stores by the end of 2022.
“We’ll really continue to see that grow in Arizona first and then it’ll be exported to the rest of the country,” said Cruise’s senior government affairs manager, Carter Stern, in a public meeting with Arizona legislators earlier in February.
Notably, each of the Arizona delivery vehicles includes a human pilot. Cruise currently employs over 100 workers in the state of Arizona, but that number is expected to grow in the near future.
As Chamber Business News points out, the latest GM announcement points to further growth in Arizona’s tech sector, with the state adding nearly 38,000 tech jobs between 2015 and 2021.
