Ford F-150 Rattler Launches As Silverado Z71, Sierra X31 rival

A fresh new rival for the Chevy Silverado Z71 and GMC Sierra X31 has arrived in the way of the newly unveiled Ford F-150 Rattler.

Ford describes the F-150 Rattler as a “rugged, entry-level addition,” to its 2023 F-Series lineup that will appeal to “adventure-seeking customers looking for a stylish truck with standard four-wheel drive for exceptional off-road capability.” The truck is built off the entry-level XL trim and features content from the FX4 off-road package, including underbody skid plates, an electronic rear-locking differential, hill descent control and retuned shocks. Cosmetic add-ons include a dual exhaust system, gloss black painted 18-inch aluminum wheels, F-150 Rattler badging on the fender vents and rattlesnake-inspired body side graphics.

Inside, the Ford F-150 Rattler is set apart by its cloth seats with bronze accents and contrasting stitching, which are intended to give the cabin a desert theme. Available exterior colors on the pickup include Oxford White, Avalanche, Iconic Silver, Carbonized Gray, Antimatter Blue, Stone Gray, Agate Black and Rapid Red TriCoat.

The 2023 Ford F-150 Rattler is a direct rival to GM’s own Z71 and X31 off-road equipment packages for the Silverado and Sierra and features almost identical equipment. Key components offered in the Z71 and Z31 packages include off-road-tuned shocks, underbody skid plates, hill descent control, a two-speed transfer case, an auto-locking rear differential and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels wrapped in knobby off-road tires.

The 2023 F-150 Rattler will go on sale this fall, Ford says. The Dearborn-based automaker has yet to confirm pricing for the new off-road-focused F-150 trim.

  1. It sounds like FX4 is more in line with Z71 because it is available on the upper trim levels. This is a package for a work truck trim. Maybe closer to the custom trailboss? Or maybe more like a custom with a z71 package?

    1. More like a midnight special edition. Remember the custom trail boss also features a 2” lift, mono tube instead of twin tube shocks and smaller chin spoiler. The trail boss is the equivalent of the ford tremor.

      1. They just don’t line up perfectly. This falls between a Z71 and custom Trail boss because there is more differentiation. Just like the Tremor is more than a Trail Boss but not a zr2.

        1. The tremor isn’t more than a trail boss. They are identical mechanically paired. (Fords wider tremor stance and additional suspension travel bring it up to Silverado standards, as the Silverado is wider and more agile in basic 4×4 package) tremor is a higher trim, yes, much like the AT4. This is more like the midnight edition. A work truck with graphics and the off road package.

  6. Look at that cheap black unfinished grille, bumpers, bumper step pads, bed caps air dam, mirrors, door handles, side vents, cheap black wheels, no chrome, no white lettered tires, sissy black SUV interior, body made from a pop can. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

    1. Unless you throw down $68k + +/- $6k on upcharging, then you’ll get the new interior AND a selectable locking differential. BUT, ding ding ding, you can’t order it with the Duramax 3.0????? Reasons still not told to the public

        Now driving 2020 f150 raptor what’s the difference between $66,000 and 73,000 soon they will be $100,000 my 2004 Chevy ran 280,000 miles F150 we will see
        Without competition we would all be driving 1980s trucks competition makes everyone better they are all nice trucks

  7. GM doesn’t dare put in a SELECTABLE locking differential in a full sized truck unless you slap $68k on the dealerships dinner plate on top of the mark ups they charge. I don’t want to wait for my 1980’s tech G80 Detroit “automatic” locking differential to kick on when I’ve already slipped 5-7 feet off the trail.

    1. I mean the ford implementation is just a another word for manual. The G80 is an auto locker. As in 100rpm differential in wheel speed it engages….. it works well. So well in fact that’s it’s been around for many years. That being said, it is a weak point…. In a “trail” situation you are referring which would be better called a “crawling” situation…. under heavy throttle and “slamming” the diff into a locked state isn’t good for it or any other for that matter.

      The G80 has its place and any serious off-roader knows this.
