Following feedback from GM fleet customers that the engine in the 6500XD was not quite powerful enough to handle certain demands, the 6500XD ditched its 5.2L 4HK1 diesel I-4 engine developed by Isuzu, which is rated at 215 horsepower at 2,500 rpm and 520 pound-feet of torque at 1,650 rpm, for the 6.7L Cummins six-cylinder engine (RPO code LCB) producing 260 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque. The 7500XD will feature the same recently introduced powertrain.
At its core, the Chevy 7500XD will essentially be the same vehicle as the Isuzu FVR – which is the Class 7 variant of the Isuzu F-Series commercial truck on which the Chevy LCF 6500XD truck is based. As such, the Chevy LCF 7500XD will be produced at the same Isuzu Spartan Motors plant in Charlotte, Michigan that builds the Isuzu F-Series trucks, as well as the current Chevy LCF 6500XD.
For those readers that may not be aware, the Chevy LCF product line is part of Chevrolet’s medium-duty truck range. These trucks were born out of an ongoing partnership between GM and Japanese manufacturer Isuzu Motors. In addition to the 6500XD, the LCF lineup also includes 3500 through 5500 models, which are equivalent to offerings in Isuzu’s own F-Series range.
The Chevy Low Cab Forward 7500XD will enter production in the near future, arriving as a 2023 model-year product We’ll have more information as its arrival approaches. Interesting/nice to see GM upgrading the capacity and performance capabilities of the XD Series of their LCF trucks. But an important configuration of the GM LCF truck models, still fail to include the 4 wheel drive train models that Izuzu has produced for many years for sale in their global markets. So why does GM choose not to include such existing production 4WD Izuzu based LCF models in our US domestic LCF market?
Don’t you mean Isuzu upgrading?
