From a segment share standpoint, the Trax held one percent, down 10 percentage points.

The HR-V led with a 16 percent segment share, up 7 percentage points while the Kona held a 10 percent share, up one percentage point. The Kicks and Compass each held a 9 percent share, while the Trailblazer held an 8 percent share, up a percentage point. The Encore GX held a 5 percent share, down two percentage points. The Encore’s share was nil, down 3 percentage points.

It’s worth noting that Chevy fields two entries in this segment, the Trax and Trailblazer. The two crossovers are mechanically not related, and the Trailblazer slots between the Trax and Chevy Equinox in the brand’s vehicle lineup. Combined sales of the Trax and Trailblazer fell 60 percent to 17,547 units, with a combined 9 percent segment share. That keeps the duo in fifth place like the Trailblazer alone, but much closer to fourth when adding sales of the Trax.

A strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but is rather in a segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 41,573 deliveries.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 20 percent to 199,014 units during Q4 2021, meaning that Chevy Trax sales severely underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Trax sales performed quite poorly during the fourth quarter, with only its corporate cousin – the Buick Encore, along with the Fiat 500X, and Mazda CX-3 faring worse. But like the CX-3, the Bow Tie brand’s subcompact crossover will soon be discontinued. As GM Authority was first to report earlier this month, GM will drop the Chevy Trax from its lineup after the 2022 model year. This also applies to the Buick Encore.

The discontinuation of the Trax will enable GM to expand Trailblazer production by some 6,000 units, as GM Authority was first to report in February.

About The Numbers

  • In the United States, there were 78 selling days in Q4 2021 and 79 selling days in Q4 2020

  1. This and the Encore are extremely cheap and uncompetitive vehicles. Mary B said “No more bad vehicles” or something to that effect but this was another one she overlooked.

  2. GM is just trying to squeeze the last little bit of life left in the Trax and Regular Buick Encore. The Trailblazer and Encore GX are much nicer inside and out. I am sure we will soon see a hybrid or EV version of the Trailblazer and Encore GX. Out with old in with new.

    1. The upcoming sub-TB is supposed to replace Trax I believe. One another note I noticed how many facilities Detroit shutdown is effecting their time to get to the market vs the Imports, Ford currently has their pants down for assembly lines and can’t deliver more products without a new factory or extension of a current on, GM fourtunly didn’t shut Oshawa down.

JIT only works in certain markets, not as a whole chasing a buck.

  3. Agreed Trax sales are way off, but the narrative used seems to place the blame for this on the Trax. In truth, it was time for this model to fade from production. This vehicle has a paper thin margin for both GM and the Dealers, it’s design is old and if kept active would require significant investment by GM to update, finally, do we really need two subcompact SUV’s? The Trailblazer is in every way a much more appealing vehicle, that already has all of the latest safety features and it is priced very close to what the Trax was. The Trailblazer also provides much better road handling characteristics, and sound insulation than the Trax. There is really 0 day supply on the Trax, and Trailblazer for that matter. The transit from S. Korea, to the dealer taking nearly 3 months on average. I can’t speak for every Chevrolet Store, but all of our Korean imports for the last 6-8 months have customer deposits and reservations, and most are physically delivered within 48 hours of hitting the lot. I can’t put the sales decline on the vehicle though, General Motors has done everything they could over the last 12 months or so to kill the model, without saying they are killing the model. The latest change was when they decided to build the vehicle without dealer orders, and have a Port Consensus to assign the vehicles to dealers as they ship from S. Korea. This was likely done due to supply chain issues to allow GM to modify package content as needed. I have never understood why GM insists on shipping the Korean models thru the Panama Canal though, and then on a milk run to ports up the east coast and finally to the Port of New Jersey. While Japanese produced vehicles for the US numbers are way down from what they were 10 and 15 years ago. Their transit times are at least 30 days shorter than GM’s as Toyota imports enter the country on the West Coast and are then shipped via rail to various distribution centers. In the Detroit Market that is West Chicago where the trains are unloaded and shipped last mile by trucks. Yes, the Trax has to go to be sure, but the decline in sales is justifiably at the hands of the General, It just does not generate the revenue needed to keep it in the Chevy Family for the Dealers, or GM.
