Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Spark sales performance places the city car in second place in its competitive set of three models.

It was outsold by the Mitsubishi Mirage, which saw sales fall 14 percent to 4,152 units. Just a year ago, the Bow Tie brand’s city hatch outsold the Mirage more than two-fold. Now the Mirage outsells the Spark by nearly three-to-one. The Fiat 500, the Spark’s only other competitor, was discontinued in the U.S. after the 2019 model year, resulting in a mere 33 sales. Similarly, the Spark will also be dropped after the 2022 model year. See more on that below.

That will leave the Mirage as the only remaining entry in the mainstream city cars segment.

Sales Numbers - Mainstream City Cars - Q4 2021 - United States

MODEL Q4 21 / Q4 20 Q4 21 Q4 20 Q4 21 SHARE Q4 20 SHARE YTD 21 / YTD 20 YTD 21 YTD 20
MITSUBISHI MIRAGE -14.29% 4,152 4,844 74% 32% +18.84% 22,741 19,136
CHEVROLET SPARK -86.09% 1,452 10,442 26% 68% -26.94% 24,459 33,478
FIAT 500 +175.00% 33 12 1% 0% -92.43% 51 674
TOTAL -63.15% 5,637 15,298 -11.33% 47,251 53,288

From a segment share standpoint, the Spark held a 26 percent share, down 42 percentage points while the Mirage held a 74 percent share, up an equal 42 percentage points.

The mainstream city cars segment contracted 63 percent to 5,637 units during Q4 2021, meaning Spark sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Spark sales fell as availability of the subcompact model decreased as a result of ongoing material and production constraints during the 2021 calendar year. Things are not likely to get much better, since the Bow Tie brand’s subcompact hatchback will be dropped after the 2022 model year.

Following the vehicle’s upcoming discontinuation, the least-expensive vehicle in Chevy’s U.S. lineup would have been the Chevy Trax crossover, but it will also be retired at the end of 2022 model year. The Chevy Sonic was also discontinued after the 2020 model year.

The demise of the Spark will also delete one of the few remaining vehicles in Chevy’s U.S. lineup that isn’t a truck, crossover, or SUV. With the departure of the Spark, Chevy’s only passenger-car offerings in the U.S. will be the Chevy Camaro, Chevy Corvette C8, and the Chevy Malibu sedan. The Malibu is expected to be sunset around 2024, while the Camaro might disappear in 2023.

The Spark’s exit will also leave the only other outdoor-focused Activ model offered by the Bow Tie brand, namely the Chevy Trailblazer.

Chevy’s shakeup of complete exit from subcompact and compact models and passenger cars in the U.S. and Canada is leaving room for the automaker’s upcoming EV offerings, including the Chevy Blazer EV and Equinox EV crossovers set to arrive in 2023. As for the Spark itself, its production capacity at the GM Changwon plant in South Korea is being earmarked for an upcoming “crossover coupe” Chevrolet model.

  1. I was looking for a new base model in October, found nothing around Chicagoland. A couple loaded ones which were not in the ballpark. Ended up with a Hyundai. Shame as I have 2 other Chevys. Will never buy cuv/truck. I guess gm went in a different direction. Chevy was the affordable entry model. This was for my daughter. Sad

That’s bad planning. The inventory crunch due to chip shortages has been all over the news for over a year, and it is effecting every automaker. Knowing this, you should have started your vehicle search months before your daughter needed a car.
Instead you stuck your daughter with a Hyundai. A brand known for: large numbers of recalls; pushing unnecessary maintenance and short life expectancy.
      Good luck with that.

      1. The Spark is made in South Korea. It’s a difference without distinction. Maybe his Hyundai was made in the USA.

        1. Hyundai/Kia builds its small cars in Mexico. Maybe before you post next time you could do about 5 seconds of research. So you wouldn’t sound like a stupid troll.

      2. @ pooper She had finally earned the right to have a car again, very long story. Had been chauffeuring her for a long time and thought about something new, used prices being what they are, and affordable with a warranty. My mechanic rescued me with a 180k mi. Elantra $4.5k, and it has run like a clock all winter. This 1.8 has a timing chain. She’s proud of her Hyundai and I’m happy.

  2. GM is no longer going to be the working man’s/lady’s car company. There are many people out there that can’t afford a $60K Silverado or a $60K EV. I want a new Equinox but all I hear is the fact that they are on allocation and delivery time is questionable. I’m told that it’s truck month, buy one!
Mary Barra should step down; The EV is destined for failure. But, in a Country where we are destined to own nothing and be happy, the EV will be rented…..it’s coming!
I hope GM goes down in flames!
See the USA in a Chevrolet….sure!

  3. If they want to sell cars/trucks stop adding a $10k markup and stop this garbage of chip shortage. They are GM for f&&k sake. Disgusting events in the car market. There is no joy looking at new cars anymore. All the the brands German and US just ruined it all. So it’s Japanese and Korean. Where you can find something nice.

    1. Japanese and Korean car dealers are also marking up SUV top sellers the 10k. Want a car pay sticker.

  4. The plant where the Spark is made was closed for retooling/construction from like September 2021 through the beginning of 2022 so yeah, they weren’t building the car so sales went down…

    1. Yeah, I remember a little while back they were talking about a $300 discount on these.
The nearest one to me was a stripped LS in Tennessee, 500 miles away.

  5. The tragic accident last week in Oklahoma, where 6 teenage girls were killed in a Spark, will not help.
Granted, it appears it was totally the driver’s fault and having 6 people in a 4 passenger car (only 2 wearing seat belts – Oklahoma does not require rear seat passengers to wear seat belts. The images of that car with the roof ripped off are obscene.
Teenagers should not be allowed to have passengers who are under 21 in a car they are driving until they are 18.

    1. I wish Spark, and similar, were not be allowed on the road. These shopping-cart sized vehicles are death traps waiting to happen.

      1. I used to own a Spark, a 2016.
I got hit at an intersection head on by a early 2000s Cadillac Seville. He was an idiot, was speeding and slid on the ice right into my lane. His airbags went off, busted the radiator on it, wouldn’t start and had to be towed.
I backed the Spark out of the front of his totaled car and they repaired mine for $5k or so as I recall.
The funny thing is, these newer cars even when really small, are heavy for their size, and the Spark had 10 airbags, which didn’t go off because the damage wasn’t that severe.
Sure it’s no F-150, but they do a pretty good job on these modern vehicles.

  6. Wonder if the high gas prices will cause a bigger demand for cars like the Spark?

  7. Of course sales dropped there have not been many on lots for quite sometime. They are not “wasting” chips on these cheap energy efficient vehicles. I even looked into orderering one not really an option at this time. Funny how you can spin a story how every you want if you leave important details out of your story. So sick of the fake media and push of agendas.

  8. Love my 2013 (midle model) Spark.
Easy on Gas, with a large touchscreen Radio. Too bad they got rid of the motorcycle-style Speedometer Pod on the steering column.
As I by cars just to commute and not impress myself & others; my next car will be another (non Chevy) subcompact !

  9. Love my 2014 5 speed Spark. I feel like buying a 2022 and shrink wrapping it. If I saw a manual transmission model probably would.
