Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Express sales placed the line of full-size vans in fourth place in its segment during Q4 2021. The Ford Transit (see running Ford Transit sales) remained in first place, posting a 45 percent decline in sales to 20,946 units. The Ram ProMaster was second with a 17 percent drop in volume to 14,184 units. The Ford E-Series (see running Ford E-Series sales) took third, posting a 10 percent decline in sales, to 10,655 units.
The Express followed in fourth, outselling only its corporate twin, the GMC Savana, and the discontinued Nissan NV. The Savana’s 37 percent uptick in sales to 4,238 units was actually represented the only model in its segment to be in the green. The Nissan NV had a mere 75 deliveries as Nissan has exited the commercial van segment.

The GM Authority Take
The Chevy Express (along with the GMC Savana) is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s, and the duo remains the oldest model in the segment by a wide margin. They’re also the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. As in prior quarters, the fourth quarter drop in Express deliveries could be attributed to insufficient inventory.
The Express and Savana received a handful of minor changes for the 2022 model year, including the removal of the power window delete option, transmission oil cooler, and CD player option. More important changes were applied for the previous 2021 model year – namely the addition of the atmospheric 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine to replace the L96 motor (and its gaseous LC8 variant).
The Chevy Express and GMC Savana are both produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri and ride on the GM GMT 610 platform. Production of the 2022 Chevy Express and 2022 GMC Savana began at the Wentzville plant on November 22nd after GM pushed back the start date from late October.
We expect the current Express and Savana to continue to be sold at least through the 2023 calendar year, but must note that GM has provisions to extend production through 2025, if it deems necessary. Each model year will likely include minor changes, updates, and improvements, which has been the case since the inception of the current models.
In the meantime, several all-new battery-electric models are on the way to replace the two models. First will be the BrightDrop EV600 and BrightDrop EV410. These will be followed with a future electric Chevy commercial van, whose name has yet to be revealed.

GM should build a Chevy to fight that new VW EV. Such a nice vehicle.
Put 6 batteries in it and make it electric, charge 80k, problem solved!
Well they could sell one more if they would build the one I ordered 7+ months ago.
Are there any on the lots for sale that they aren’t asking $45k or more for? Even used vans with high miles they are asking crazy prices.
Kept getting flames because I’d said these Civil War era vans should had been replaced years ago, at the least based them on the older K2 pickup platform if GM didn’t want to spend too much on the vans..
Nothing looks more prehistoric than a Ford Transit. The Ram looks great from the front but the rear is just tinker toys. Plus it’s front-wheel drive. Something a trucker would never be caught dead in.
Fleet managers don’t care what the “trucker” wants. The “trucker” can satisfy his or her desire for rear-wheel by changing jobs. Meantime, the electrician I had here at the house last month appreciated the lower floor and more room in his ProMaster. So did the HVAC guy doing the autumn tune-up on my system.
Also, note the ProMaster’s sales position in the chart. I guess a lot of VAN drivers (van-ers?) find them a desirable vehicle, as do fleet managers.
I agree, I worked in a van and you always had to bend over. But I still wouldn’t buy a transit it’s so damn ughly. The Ram is a lot better looking but it’s all front end. It’s like an elephant in the front and a gazelle in the back.
I work for a big irrigation company and we have the Chevy and gmc vans as well as the ford and ram vans I have driven all 4 and by far the promaster is my favorite. At any given property whether it’s commercial or residential I get in the back of the van at least 20 times for different pipes and glue ect… the fact I don’t have to duck down in the promaster makes a world of difference. Almost all the guys I work with agree it definitely saves you some serious back pain at the end of the day. My boss said all future purchases will now solely be the promaster.
Must be people using a vpn on you again?
Or a right wing troll…..
Naw definitely those big bad people using a vpn on you. Everyone on this website highly values your input we really do. Everything you say is so enlightening. We know you only troll when you use my name.
Trumpf 4 lyfe!!! .
Vituperative Pugnacious Nonsense? No, I don’t think so.
Ordered 9 months ago. Still hasn’t been accepted. Sales numbers would be higher but they aren’t making enough of them.
Someone told me they are, but the Rental Companies are getting first orders because they are guaranteed orders. Not sure how true this is.
That’s interesting hearing that. I know here locally if I search for vans in stock there are 2 dealers receiving them (both 400km’s apart) apparently they have 5-7 “in transit” heading to the dealer. All of them are white, and mostly base models with a few options. I ordered mine with almost every option possible (minus the extra safety features). Will be interesting to see if I get it. Once the electric model is introduced, or any updated version of the express/Savana I will cancel my order and find a used one I guess.
Seems to me that when someone has cash money on deposit at a dealership, that is a guaranteed order. Chevrolet had canceled the Spark order my brother had cash money on, three times. Guaranteed orders likely have nothing to do with it. Incompetence and stupidly likely do.
He’s looking elsewhere.
yes that is the one of many areas where gm could do better with the savana and the express. I service fedex vehicles and if you had a savana or express that u could walk around in the back like a sprinter it would be exceptional. Ive worked on the transit, promaster, savana and express and Maintenace wise, the transit and promaster are more costlier on repairs than the either of the gms. Now does the fuel mileage offset the cost? Not sure. I have some people who are in the hvac, plumbing and electrical trades ask me if you could buy a van to do what i do what would it be. Hands down a gm van. Year models 03 till present they are pretty much the same. Not fancy by no means but durable, reliable and cheaper to work on than anything else on the market. Would prefer the gas models(4.8) vs the baby dmax(2.8) but just because of length of service so far. Dmax gets better fuel mileage though.
Absolutely true. I had one for 10 years as a 6-day-a-week workhorse and it NEVER broke down on the road save for a flat tire. Body, engine, all held up under very HEAVY USE. Always started when you turned the key.
Those 4.8 engines were awesome. My 2093 had it and i put 300,000 miles on it and i still see the truck on the road.
This is an old box on wheels. It is and looks like a 1990’s model.
Ford sold more than double of GM. Plain data.
Hopefully the Brightdrop replaces GMT610. It has been said that it would be either replaced with an updated version or killed multiple times.
This is a vehicle to be used only for cargo. Any passenger that wishes to suffer in a not very long trip, just ride in any of the back seats of the Express / Savana. You will hate them after three to four hours riding.
GM … want to sell more and become #1 in sales, here’s how. Begin by offering a 1500 series like you did in the past so people can make a cheaper family hauler, and upgrade the interiors, add things like sat/radio and nav/system, with a freshened front end mirroring the new Silverado Begin building on the 3500 series with the above mentioned for the taxi people. Begin building on the 3500 series a higher metal (6 .5″ walking height) roof as Ford an Dodge/Ram as done. Offer better interior and dual wheels, a maximum tow package for construction workers who need to tow say a skid steer and employees. The above few ideas would be greatly accepted … even with the rise in gas prices I’d be interested today (and I looking to buy and not finding anything I really like) in a 1500 series with the above mentioned changes that’d I buy today. The only thing I’m seeing right now that come close to what I actually like is the Mercedes Metris which as I’d like is around $41K. To buy a Mercedes means buying out of town, done that one time, won’t again. My Chevy or GMC dealer is less than 5 miles away.
Strange that the market share of the Transit went down by 6% and the market share of the E-series went up by 5%.
I’m wondering if that is due to one of several things. Two examples: the vagaries of parts availability for assembly, and the other being “waves” of fleet renewals where, say, a major buyer like Ryder or Penske suddenly places a four-figure-quantity order.
Same as Dave, I ordered 2 in late 2019 have yet to even get a build sheet. Yet I see rebates offered on this web site from time to time
Mr. Reese: You are a very patient man.
Looks like all the manufacturers went down in sales. I don’t see how a Ford Transit is outselling everyone. It so effing ughly it should be used for a hearse.
Fleet managers don’t buy based on looks.
Most companies buy off of mpg, tax write offs, kickbacks and price. Sometimes they will see their short sightedness but most times not. That ford transit has the FORD on the front, so companies and individuals think its a FORD its gotta be good. Wrong! Not saying its horrible by any stretch of the means but if your used to an E-series van or Gm based van, you will be in for a rude awaking once you start servicing that jewel. Its more like a disposable razor blade than an asset your gonna have for a long time. Gotta replace rear rotors(pull the axles), tires wear 3 times as fast?? wanna service the trans? Yeah rite, 3 to 4 hr job. It may have its place but was never intended to replace a good van, heck even an astro van would last longer. lol
The picture of the interior does not show a screen which i thought was required now to support back up camera. Anyone know why? Old pic? Camera is in rearview mirror?
Its in the rearview mirror.
Our Express Van was ordered in August 2021, It is now April 2022,.. Looks like Chevrolet is Finally going out of Business just like the US Postal Service. Our Company had Planned on Purchasing 8 more as soon as this one arrived. Our Fleet has always been Proud Bowtie Express, But Looking like we will be Switching over to Mopar as is Obvious Chevrolet is Driving their Business into History instead of Climbing into the Future. One Year ago GM(Chevrolet) Stock had a Value of $60+ per Share, Today Their Decline has Fallen to $40 per Share(Down 35% in 12 Months). These are Facts that People have Realized that Chevy is One More Step Closer to Bankruptcy and Finalization. Remember when People Drove Buggies and Carriages(just Like Chevy), a Thing of the Past,….if you Still Hold any Stock, Get out While you can
